A Rockets fan goodbye to Dillon Brooks

NBA: Playoffs-Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets

Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

A “Dear John” to our favorite villain

Dear Dillon,

When the Houston Rockets acquired your services via free agency in the summer of 2023, it did not appear that the rest of the NBA had been beating your door down asking you to sign with them. In fact, we saw reports that you would be going to play in China, back to Canada, the Euro League, etc.

They said that LeBron had ended your career the way Eminem ended the rap career of MGK. The narrative had been set on you. So naturally, when we discovered that the Rockets had inked you to a four-year contract worth $86 million, you have to forgive us for being skeptical. Very few of us had watched you play every game of each season, so the narrative impacted our feelings about the signing.

When my editor tasked me with bidding you farewell on behalf of all TDS faithful, I decided to speak to some Rockets fans and ask what they felt I should say. The overwhelming and prevailing theme was “culture change”.

Yes, you did shoot the ball better than you have at any other point in your career, (TS% of 55.5 in two seasons) and yes, you played with the same defensive tenacity on the court that you always have, but the biggest impact you had on this team was to change the fabric of what it was made of. Relentless effort, never being out-hustled, never backing down from any challenge. That began to permeate the locker-room, and we saw the impact it had on players such as Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr. and even Jalen Green.

You were the embodiment of the type of player that Ime Udoka wanted, and you did exactly what he brought you here to do. You earned every penny of the salary you were paid, and that is what makes it difficult to say goodbye. Generally, the best NBA trades sting on both sides of the deal. The book is far from written on who won or lost this trade, but losing a player as yourself will be felt. Even with the generational greatness of Kevin Durant, the intangibles you brought to the game are not easily replaced. For Rockets fans sake, we hope that your impact will be felt through the play of the young players you influenced in your time here.

We wish you well with the Phoenix Suns, unless you’re playing us obviously. Should you continue to be teammates with Jalen Green, hold the young man up and tell him to keep his head up. He has a bright future, and you can count this writer among the people who believe the Rockets gave up on him too soon. But for now, that’s spilled milk. We look forward as I’m sure you do, and again we thank you and wish you well.

Sincerely,

H-Town

NBA: Draft

Draft Time | Brad Penner-Imagn Images

An Annual Tradition With Xiane And Now FanDuel

The 2025 NBA Draft has lost some interest for Rockets fans, as the Rockets used the 10th pick to draft an almost certain Hall of Famer, Kevin Durant. Still, if you follow NBA prospects, or even the evolution of NBA talent evaluation, the draft is always interesting.

Armin and I, and Blaine, The Friendly Spurs Fan, will be talking draft over on playback, as well. I’ll be updating draft picks, with a bit of commentary as we go, right here, too. I’m talented that way.

Meanwhile, FanDuel will be busy, too. They’ll be updating every NBA team’s 2025-2026 title odds, live, with every pick. I wouldn’t expect the Rockets to change much, as they aren’t picking, but you never know. Check out those title odds! Live!

The Rockets might get into the draft later on, possibly by trading one of their own upcoming picks to Brooklyn. Brooklyn currently has FIVE picks in this draft, surpassing the Rockets 2021 draft with four. The Rockets couldn’t really handle developing four rookies at the same time. Perhaps Rafael Stone made bad picks late, with Garuba and Christopher, but also, the Rockets barely did any development at that point with Green and Sengun, in some respects. Adding two more seemed to be a problem.

Anyhow, on with the draft!

NBA 2025 Draft, Round One, June 25th, 7pm CST.

1. Dallas Mavericks - Cooper Flagg

Cooper Flagg has already been picked. Not officially, but he has. Cooper is the first white US born player to go 1-1 since 1967. Cooper hasn’t yet brought world peace, or ended all human suffering, but I’m sure he’ll do it soon. For the MFing Mavericks, somehow.

2. San Antonio Spurs - Dylan Harper

Hey, another miracle high pick for yet another Texas team. That’s wonderful. Just wonderful. Dylan Harper is named, of course, for Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. He’s also the higher drafted Rutgers player of this century. Harper is a fashionably tall point, and can play off ball as well. He’s also a legacy, son of NBA player Ron Harper. Dylan Harper won’t turn 20 until next March. So he’s got a lot of development potential.

3. Philadelphia 76ers - VJ Edgecombe

It’s not Ace Bailey, it’s VJ Edgecombe! Edgecombe is there to represent the Baylor Bears in the NBA. That’s all. That’s all he cares about. There’s a bit of a jam with 76ers guards with Maxey, Quentin Grimes, and Jared McCain around already. Grimes is an unrestricted free agent, so perhaps he won’t be a 76er? Edgecombe is a spectacular athlete, so the dream is that he becomes an awesome two way player. Right now he can’t really shoot, so we’ll see if two way traffic appears.

4. Charlotte Hornets - Kon Kneuppel

It’s a great, great, day for pasty white guys! Kon Kneuppel not only went to Duke but has brothers named, I kid you not, Kager, Kidman, Kinston, Krypton, and Kash. One of those isn’t real. Kon is a very heady player, good shooter, plays defense, sets picks and generally makes his teammates better. Basically the opposite of famous teammate LaMelo Ball.

5. Utah Jazz - Ace Bailey

The slide ends! Ace Bailey is a Jazzman! He’s got all the talent in the world, he could be Tracy McGrady. He could be Tracy McGravy. If he focuses, plays defense, learns to shoot better, he could be a top five player in time. Will he? Who knows? Utah has bet big on him, as Danny Ainge and The Ainge Family Business loves to bet on big time prospects, well know guys, and doesn’t care that much about college production. This pick is proof of that.

6. Washington Wizards - Tre Johnson

Tre Johnson is the highest picked Texas Longhorn since push off savant Lamarcus Aldridge was drafted second by the Trailblazers. Sadly, Tre is going to Where NBA Careers Go To Die, Washington DC. That said, he’s a great shooter, with an NBA frame, and high level offensive game. If anyone can continue the Washington tradition of Fake Stars, like John Wall and Bradley Beal, it’s Tre. As TEX, the UT phone registration system for classes of yore, might have said, “Goodbye, and Good Luck, Tre. You’re Gonna Need It.”

7. New Orleans Pelicans - Jeremiah Fears

Fears has a great handle, and speed. He’s also kind of Reed Sheppard without the shooting, or passing. The Jazz worked out Fears, and took Ace Bailey. I have my doubts a non-shooting, non-defending 6’2” guy has a great chance. New Orleans really, really, needed a center. They also needed a point guard. I suppose they got one. Fears DOES get to the line and make his free throws, and his speed and handle are superb. He’s not a bad bet, but he is a risky one. His high level outcome is stardom, and low level is backup guard.

8. Brooklyn Nets - Egor Demin

The Nets first of five possible picks is Egor Demin. Demin is a tall point guard from Russia, and a passing savant. Can he shoot? Can he defend? Who knows? He can pass. Brooklyn needs basically...everything. Adding a giant point with high upside is an interesting move. There are many more to come for Brooklyn.

9. Toronto Raptors - Colin Murray-Boyles

This is another interesting pick. The Raptors probably needed a center, and the got one of sort. Murray-Boyles is a very solid player, and can play center or power forward. He’s not tall though, which is usually a requirement for an NBA center. He’s 6’6” to 6’7” but at least 240 pounds, and kind of an ass kicker. He can play, but can he be a center in the NBA?

10. Phoenix Suns - Officially Rockets, But Suns - Kaman Maluach

Phoenix badly needed a center besides Nick Richards, Bol Bol, and they got maybe the best one in the draft in Duke’s Maluach. Another very young player with high upside.

11. Portland Trailblazers - Traded To Memphis Grizzle - Cedric Coward

The Trailblazers could have really used Coward, a tough player who can shoot, defend, and played college ball at Willamette for Pete’s sake. Nope. Memphis gets to murder another small forward. Coward’s stock really took off in the draft process. He truly used college to turn into what I think will be a very solid NBA. So very glad he’s going to Memphis. Very. Glad.

12. Chicago Bulls - Noa Essengue

Tall, young, French, grifty, falls down a lot. A real “Maybe” player. Very Bulls.

13. Atlanta Hawks - Traded To New Orleans Pelicans - Derik Queen

The DQ Dude is going to New Orleans. I think he’ll have a great time, and love the food. New Orleans needed a center, and they probably got the most fun center in the draft. Derik Queen is a lot like Sengun, crafty, unpredictable, and a badass.

14. San Antonio Spurs - Carter Bryant

Carter Bryant is a typical Rocket, big, athletic, great defender, suspect shooting. But he’s a Spur. He also wore a plum double breasted blazer that looks like a bellhop uniform without a shirt. So he’s got that going for him.

15. Oklahoma City Thudner - Thomas Sorber

Sorber is a solid center out of Georgetown, which has produced a good center or three over the years. He’s the kind of tough, smart, player the Thudner love. He’ll be insurance for Chet/Hartenstein and the payroll increase OKC has coming. I’m annoyed they took him.

16. Portland from Memphis - Yang Hansen

7’2” with a 90ft standing reach. Yang Hansen has been described by our own NVP as “Chinese Sengun”. So that’s cool. He was dressed, and looked like a Final Fantasy character. I will admit I know next to nothing else about him.

17. Minnesota Timberwolves - Joan Beringer

Another very tall non-American. Joan Beringer isn’t a lesser known folk singer, or heir to the rip off guitar pedal fortunate. No, he’s a center from France. Beringer is only 18 years old, so he’s almost sure to improve, and was pretty good already.

18. Washington Wizards - Traded To Utah Jazz - Walter Clayton Jr.

He made a lot of shots in the NCAA tournament against the state of Texas. He has a very cute child. He’s got one skill, like all the other Jazz guards, so that’ll work out perfectly. Good work, Ainge Clan, you drafted another famous college player.

19. Brooklyn Nets - Nolan Traoré

Another swing for the fences, like Egor Demin. Traore is very gifted, very young. He saw his stock slip recently, but the talent and upside are there. The Nets are going for upside in a big way this draft. This seems like the right move to me.

20. Miami Heat - Kasparas Jakucionis

A big, excellent passing PG/SG from Lithuania, with truly fun and amazing court vision. There are questions about his defense, athleticism, and shooting. I’m sure it’ll be fine. Pat Riley has already declared he’s untouchable.

21. Utah Jazz - Will Riley

Two, count em two, Illinois players in the first round. Riley was a highly rated recruit who struggled for most of the season and turned on late. Very Jazz. Danny Ainge and the Ainge Nepo Mob don’t really care about college performance, so another Aingey pick as part of the Jazz’ seven year rebuild plan.

22. Brooklyn Nets via Atlanta Hawks - Drake Powell

I have no idea who this guy is. He was projected by most in the 2nd round. Pep Guardiola likes his ball winning skills though, so I’m sure it’ll be fine.

23. Atlanta Hawks via some complex trade - Asa Newell

A great pick by the Hawks. A tough, tenacious player, great defender and rebounder. Less of an offensive player at present. A great replacement for a sadly fading Clint Capela.

24. Oklahoma City Thudner - Traded To Sacramento Kings - Nique Clifford

An annoyingly good pick, but fortunately not to the Thudner. Instead the multi skilled Nique Clifford goes to the Sacramento Kings. No doubt the Kings gave up their next 12 drafts for the privilege.

25. Orlando Magic - Jase Richardson

Another legacy. A guy who can play offense, but isn’t gigantic. This is a betrayal of everything Orlando stands for. What a fiasco.

26. Brooklyn Nets - Again - Ben Saraf

Another non American player, this time another RatioPharmer, Ben Saraf, an Israeli player. He’s tall. I really don’t know much about him. I have failed you.

27. Brooklyn Nets - Yet Again - Danny Wolf

Possibly the most fun player in this draft. The American Sengun. Poor Danny was breaking down, thinking maybe he wasn’t getting drafted. His whole family is very tall, and all were crying I can’t wait for Danny’s career.

28. Boston Celtics - Hugo González

A Spanish wing who will no doubt be annoyingly good for Boston. Why wasn’t it Liam McNeely? In Boston.

29. Charlotte Hornets - From Phoenix From Utah From Cleveland - Liam McNeely

Liam McNeely, a shooter who couldn’t shoot. He’s projected to shoot it well though. The fourth Mont Verde Academy player from the same class to get drafted.

30. Los Angeles Clippys - Yanic Konan Niederhauser

No idea. Honestly none. Cool name though. Is 22.

Report: Rockets to bring back trio of veterans

San Antonio Spurs v Houston Rockets

Photo by Logan Riely/NBAE via Getty Images

Rafael Stone has been busy, that’s for sure.

It’s been an eventful offseason so far for the Houston Rockets, and the news just keeps on coming, as Shams Charania is reporting that the Rockets plan to bring back Jeff Green, Jae’Sean Tate and Aaron Holiday.

The Houston Rockets intend to sign their free agents Jae'Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday and Jeff Green on new contracts to bring them all back for next season, sources tell ESPN. pic.twitter.com/8yRqFRtGUz

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 27, 2025

Tate and Green’s contracts were expired, making them unrestricted free agents, so it sounds like they’ll be back in the fold with new deals. Holiday owns a team option for 2025-2026 for $4.9 million, so it remains to be seen whether Houston picks up his option or declines it and then re-signs him to the vet minimum, which for Holiday, would be $3.4 million next season at seven years experience. I’d much rather see that. Tate would qualify for $2.9 million for his five years of service if he were to be signed to the vet minimum, while that goes up $3.9 million in the case of Green, who has over 10 years (17 actually) in.

I think the best analysis for this situation came from our old friend Lachard Binkley.

For anyone wondering they are bringing them back it is because it isn’t easy finding players willing to go 10-15 games at a time not playing and still stay ready. All of these players are professionals and stay ready regardless of situation. https://t.co/dnlnyRBMNH

— Lachard Binkley (@BinkleyHoops) June 27, 2025

All three are stand-up locker room guys, and especially in Green’s case, serve as mentors to the young players. They don’t call him Unc for nothing.

With the roster for next season starting to round into shape, the Rockets should still have the full MLE of roughly $14 million available provided all of these guys come back on the minimum. There are still some needs. The Rockets certainly need more offense — meaning scoring and shooting, preferrably from the two-guard slot. Houston lost two of them in the Kevin Durant deal.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing another big, though that would be a luxury need coming after another guard. Steven Adams take a beating, and it sounds like the two-big lineup is here to stay. The big man will likely need time off. Jock Landale played well at times last season, but I don’t know how much faith I have in him long term should Adams or (god forbid) Alperen Sengun miss any extended time.

We’ll be back later with a look at some possibilities for the MLE.

Report: Kevin Durant wants to retire with Rockets

Phoenix Suns v Houston Rockets

Not all that suprising when you consider KD will be 37 when the season starts.

With the Houston Rockets trading for Kevin Durant, one of the big questions still remaining is about the future. KD has one year remaining on his deal at $55 million. The Rockets will most certainly be hoping for an extension after giving up Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the first-round pick that became Khaman Maluach, plus five future second round picks. They didn’t do that for a one-year rental. Well, a recent report has both sides looking for an extension, with KD reportedly wanting to retire in Houston.

According to Shams Charania on ESPN’s First Take, Houston was Durant’s top choice, and he intends to stay with the Rockets until he’s ready to hang them up. Shams said:

“The goal right now for Kevin Durant and the Rockets is for him to retire in Houston. They’re going to eventually this offseason discuss a contract extension and figure out where that lands.

“Kevin Durant, from what I understand, he was excited to go to Houston to specifically play with Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith, Reed Sheppard. They’ve got so many young players—Tari Eason as well—and Ime Udoka is a coach that he’s very familiar with from Team USA as well as with the Nets. There’s a lot of mutual respect there, a deep level of respect. So there’s excitement there.”

A contract extension is either looking like two years, $112 million if it happens quickly, or two years, $124 million if both sides are willing to wait six months. KD becomes officially eligible for an extension on July 6.

I’ve made my feelings known on the Rockets trading for Kevin Durant. I was not in favor. Sure, KD looks like a great fit on paper, but KD looks like a fit on paper for all 30 NBA teams. As we’ve seen in Brooklyn and in Phoenix, that doesn’t mean the end results match up with plans and desires. The forward is well-known to be moody and mercurial. Thankfully, Houston has two steady hands in veterans Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams for the young core to rely on, along with a hard-nosed coach in Ime Udoka, whom Durant respects, which should help mitigate that some.

Also thankfully, Raphael Stone didn’t overpay, and the Rockets still have their future ahead of them with numerous first-round assets, plus several potential budding stars. If this turns out to be a mistake, or KD gets injured or gets old quickly, the Rockets should be able to pivot relatively easily. Nice job by Stone hedging his bets. You can tell just by that fact alone, Stone isn’t without his reservations as well. The potential KD drawbacks are well known: age, injury history, always seems to have a bug up his ass about something. (This really made me laugh)

With any luck, we’ll have completely forgot about those reservations, with the Rockets hoisting a title sometime in the next three seasons, which is looking like about how long we can expect KD. If that happens (or even if the Rockets get close), I’ll more than happily take my crow. Just make sure it has a little hot sauce please.

Rockets sign Jabari Smith Jr. to five-year, $122 million extension

Houston Rockets v Golden State Warriors - Game Four

Smith’s deal is fully guaranteed.

The Houston Rockets wasted very little time at the start of free agency, committing to forward Jabari Smith Jr. for the long term by offering him a five-year, $122 deal that is fully guaranteed through the 2031 season.

Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. intends to sign a five-year, $122 million rookie contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Rockets officials and Smith's agent, Wallace Prather of LIFT Sports Management, negotiated the fully guaranteed deal through 2030-31 season. pic.twitter.com/S1hb9n0PRh

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 29, 2025

Despite missing some time with a broken hand this season and not regaining back his starting job upon return, Smith is considered one of Houston’s main core and is expected back in the starting lineup at power forward this seaso.

He averaged 12.2 points, 7 boards, and 1.1 assists on 43.8 percent shooting from the floor and 35.4 percent shooting from deep. He played well in the first round NBA Playoffs series against the Golden State Warriors despite still coming off of the bench, shooting over 45 percent from deep in series.

This deal is a huge vote of confidence for Smith, who despite playing well at times, has yet to full realize his potential as a former number three overall pick. It’s important to remember that Smith just turned 22 this offseason, so the Rockets obviously see his potential still growing in short and long term with this extension averaging $24.4 million per year. Smith is the only draftee from the 2022 NBA Draft Class to have 2500 points and 1500 rebounds so far in his career (Paolo Banchero has 1398 boards to Smith’s 1584).

The Rockets continue a busy offseason in which they traded for Kevin Durant, extended head coach Ime Udoka, and re-signed Jae’Sean Tate, Jeff Green and Aaron Holiday and now the Smith extension.

Rafael Stone likley now turns his attention to Tari Eason, who is a bit more complicated of a case, as Eason has played in just 79 out of 164 games the past two seasons. We’ll see what Stone can come with after reportedly keeping Eason out of any talks about Kevin Durant.

Congrats to ‘Bari. One of my favorite Rockets!

Rockets sign familiar face Clint Capela to three-year, $21.5 million deal

Philadelphia 76ers v Atlanta Hawks

A surprising return for Capela.

Happy Free Agency! The most chaotic time of the NBA offseason is now underway, and Rafael Stone wasted no time making acquisitions as Shams Charania reported that the Houston Rockets had signed Capela to a three-year, $21.5 million contract.

Free agent center Clint Capela has agreed to a three-year, $21.5 million deal with the Houston Rockets, sources tell ESPN. Major frontcourt addition – and return to Houston for Capela. pic.twitter.com/1l20sBt9p2

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 30, 2025

Capela played with Houston from 2014–15 to the 2020 trade deadline after being selected by the Rockets in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft. Capela was then traded to Atlanta along with Nene and Gerald Green as part of a multi-team trade that brought Robert Covington to Houston (this trade broke my heart). Since then, the Swiss big man has played with the Hawks.

Capela has averaged 12 points (61.7% FG), 10.5 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 26.2 minutes per game over the course of 11 NBA seasons. However, the 31-year-old Capela didn’t play as much in the 2024–25 season as he had in any of his eight prior seasons (8.9 points, 8.5 rebounds in 21.4 minutes). In his second decade in the league, Capela seems to be shifting into a more backup role. In Houston, he will undoubtedly play a backup role, trailing veteran backup Steven Adams and All-Star center Alperen Sengun on the depth chart.

Having said that, Sengun and Adams’ “double big” lineups from late last season should free up some playing time for a third center. Furthermore, given that Adams is also 31 years old, it’s feasible that he and Capela may share a workload during the 82-game regular season.

What is important to note is that the Rockets can’t afford to sign Capela outright. That combined with Capela’s entrance would seem to indicate that Jock Landale is leaving, as his guarantee date approaches. My guess is Houston negotiates some sign-and-trade using Cam Whitmore and waives Landale in order to stay under the second apron, but we will see, as there’s more free agency chaos to come all this week.

Rockets still cooking, sign Dorian Finney-Smith to a four-year deal

NBA: Playoffs-Los Angeles Lakers at Minnesota Timberwolves

Matt Blewett-Imagn Images

Are we allowed to say Shams-Bomb?

Shams Charania of ESPN is reporting that the Houston Rockets have agreed to sign former Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith, to a four-year $53 million dollar contract. This move immediately fills the void of Dillon Brooks offensively and more importantly on the defensive end. Finney-Smith played 43 games or 1,239 minutes with the Lakers, and in those minutes the team boasted a +11.1 net rating, the best among all rotation players in that span.

He averaged 8.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in the entirety of the season. He shot 44.8 percent from the field, including 41.1 percent from the three-point line. At 6ft-7in Finney-Smith is a very versatile defender who will allow the Rockets to switch in their pick-and-roll defense, since he is able to guard all five positions.

Rumors of mutual interest between Finney-Smith and the Rockets began to swirl immediately following his declining of his player option to stay with the Lakers. Undoubtedly, the chance to play with Kevin Durant and Houston’s talented young nucleus and compete for an NBA championship is what drew Finney-Smith to the Rockets. Likewise, the Rockets were in search of a 3-and-D player who would add to their wing depth and bring the grit and defensive toughness that Ime Udoka demands from his players, and they found it in Finney-Smith, without having to break the bank or give up more assets.

With the resigning of Jae’Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday, and Steven Adams, in combination with the growth and development of Tari Eason, and for the moment the presence of Cam Whitmore and Reed Sheppard on the roster, not to mention the most recent addition of Clint Capela, it’s despite losing two key starters from a 52-win team in the trade for Kevin Durant, that the Houston Rockets actually just got deeper.

Speculation has already begun as the Rockets remain in even more trade rumors from people who cover hoops that believe the Rockets may be positioning themselves to make even bigger waves this offseason. I know that my fellow TDS faithful will be watching with weighted breath as the summer is just heating up.
