The 2026 NFL Free agency period kicks off tomorrow and Jess and I are back with the second of our previews.

This one is all about the defense, and the Arizona Cardinals defense had holes in 2025, and now has more holes after the releases they have had leading into this week.

Jess and I start with a look from the defensive front and work our way back to the secondary, and we even get into the specialist as the Cardinals have absolutely none under contract.

Who are the top players, who are the best fits and who are the realistic options we could see coming in for the 2026 season?

Cardinals CB Sean Murphy-Bunting restructures deal, Ryland returns

The NFL free agency period starts tomorrow with the tampering period open March 9-11, and the all contracts become official on March 12, which is the beginning of the NFL new year.

Both the Saturday and Sunday before free agency begins are usually very busy with announced trades, plus restructuring existing contracts aimed at allowing the franchise more cap room.

RELATED: CONNER AGREES TO CONTRACT RESTRUCTURE

In addition to the franchise restructuring of Conner’s deal, the team also restructured the contract of CB Sean Murphy-Bunting, plus re-signed kicker Chad Ryland.

gettyimages-2192888588.jpg

A lot of trades are formulated at the Combine, and then ironed out before free agency actually begins. Every NFL GM is in Indianapolis, home of the Combine, so they are able to throw out ideas and scenarios regarding players. Some trades actually happen at the Combine and announced, while others are started and agreed upon, just not finished until the week after for one reason or another.

But it was ironed out in a hotel bar or out by the pool, or in the workout room, or in the stands at the Combine. GMs love to do business face-to-face, and the Senior Bowl and the Combine are the only NFL events where all participants are in attendance and available.

This weekend, Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort was busy with some in-house laundry when he restructured the contract of veteran RB James Conner right before free agency began. Conner had signed a two-year, $19 million extension in November of 2024 that would keep him on the roster through the 2026 season. The 31-year old was due a roster bonus of $1 million on March 15 and scheduled to make $6.4 million this year.

The #AZCardinals have also agreed to a reworked deal with CB Sean Murphy-Bunting, who missed the 2025 season with an injury. He's back in Arizona for this upcoming season. https://t.co/3usq6fD2cZ

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 8, 2026

Another contract that was restructured was the cornerback Murphy-Bunting. He came to Arizona in 2024 and signed a three–year, $25.50 million deal, which involved $17.39 million guaranteed with $14.19 million guaranteed upon signing. He was originally selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He had 15 starts in his first year with the Cardinals, with 52 tackles, three tackles for loss, zero sacks, five batted passes, and three picks. However, in May of last year, before training camp began, he suffered a horrible knee injury away from the practice facility. The injury and subsequent surgery placed Murphy-Bunting on the reserve/non-football injury list, which meant he was then sidelined for the entire 2025 season.

Murphy-Bunting is expected to compete for a starting position in the defensive backfield and could become the dark horse on this year’s Cardinals defense. It was expected that the team would cut him this offseason, which would have saved $7.2 million in cap space by releasing him. But instead, Ossenfort restructured his contract and wants him to come in healthy and work himself back into a starting role.

One reason the franchise is bringing back Murphy-Bunting is that new head coach Mike LaFleur retained DC Nick Rallis, who wanted the cornerback. The defensive backfield already has young players such as Will Johnson, Garrett Williams, Max Melton, and the emergence of Denzel Burke, and Rallis believes that Murphy-Bunting ties this group all together. His veteran presence should become the glue to this group.

This also allows Ossenfort to focus on other positions of need in April’s NFL draft instead of the cornerback room.

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 8, 2026

In addition, kicker Ryland was inked to another one-year deal. This is a smart move since Ryland displayed a dependable leg and was very consistent.

Last year, in his second season with Arizona, Ryland played in all 17 games and was successful on 25 of 33 field goals for a 75.8% accuracy rate. He was 6-10 of 50+ which was his weakest distance. He converted on every PAT going 36-36 and had 82 kickoffs with 20 touchbacks.

In 2024, Ryland converted 28 of 32 field goals (87.5%) and missed only one PAT in 27 attempts.

James Conner agrees to contract restructure, will be back for 2026 season

The running back room will apparently not be too different in 2026.

The Arizona Cardinals and running back James Conner have agreed on a restructure of the backs contract in order for him to remain with the team.

The Cardinals and two-time Pro Bowl RB James Conner have agreed to a revised contract to keep him in Arizona for 2026, sources say.

Conner played just three games last season because an ankle injury. But he’ll be back at age 31. pic.twitter.com/xYlucNRbJH

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 8, 2026

Conner only saw action in three games in 2025 before a devastating ankle injury cost him the remainder of the season.

In the two seasons prior, Conner in 2023 and 2024 finished with over 1,000 yards rushing in both years, and had been over 1,000 combined rushing and receiving yards in every year he had been with the Cardinals since he joined the team in 2021.

Now, he will be back for another year, this time at a lower cost and looking to bounce back after that ankle injury.

Can the soon to be 31-year old running back get back to his bruising ways?

Is this the best option for both sides for the 2026 NFL season?

What are your thoughts?

Need to Know! Cardinals’ new RB Tyler Allgeier

gettyimages-2250636694.jpg

Red-circle.jpg

The Arizona Cardinals are knee deep in the free agency period. Usually, the first day will bring in a splash or two, and also a lot of whispers, cheers, and doubts.

Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort earns a huge portion of his paycheck during these first three days. On Day 1, he inked RB Tyler Allgeier, a huge need for the franchise.

RELATED: CARDINALS FREE AGENT TRACKER

The Cardinals hired an offensive guy to be their head coach this year in Mike LaFleur. He came from the Los Angeles Rams which is deep into the West Coast offense. That is what everyone in the desert is expecting the Cardinals to look like going forward.

gettyimages-2254074235.jpg

Well, in order to accomplish this, the offense needs a very good offensive line, capable QBs, reliable receivers, two excellent tight ends, and stud running backs.

James Conner recently restructured his contract, and now Ossenfort has signed Atlanta Falcons RB Tyler Allgeier.

Who is he? What does he offer the offense?

Beginnings

Allgeier (pronounced al-jeer) grew up in Fontana, California, and attended Kaiser High School. He classifies himself as Caucasian and Filipino. Which means he knows how to roll lumpia and probably makes great pancit.

Fontana is about an hour east of Los Angeles, with a population of around 200,000. Two interstates and one major state road intersect at Fontana, so it is considered a trucking hub with so many truck stops available.

Allgeier was raised by a single mother, Ester. He played RB and was a three-year starter. His high school career numbers are 34 starts with 5,086 yards on 614 carries, an 8.3 yards per carry average, 149.6 yards per game average, and scored 56 touchdowns. He also had 41 receptions for 355 yards with an additional four scores. He also played some defense. Upon graduation, he was the school’s all-time leading rusher. He was voted All-CIF.

Despite his good stats, he had only one offer, and that wasn’t even a full ride with Southern Nazarene, a D-2 program in Oklahoma. His high school coach talked to college scouts who stated that Allgeier was either too stiff or too slow. Then BYU offered him a preferred walk-on spot. True walk-ons earn a spot on the roster after a tryout. A preferred walk-on is guaranteed to be on the team as long as he follows the rules and produces. Neither is on scholarship, but can earn a scholarship later.

Allgeier’s high school coach, Bill Cardosi, told Darnell Dickson of the Daily Herald:

“We have a saying at Kaiser. It goes, ‘We, not me.’ That’s the mentality of always doing what’s best for your team, and that’s what Tyler did. We know how it worked at BYU with missions. There were no scholarships available, not yet. Tyler knew he would have to earn everything. That’s where greatness is built, when you’re doubted. It’s a driving force for a lot of athletes. I told him to work hard, stay humble, and be great. Sometimes it’s going to be worse before it gets better.”

Because of this bumpy road, Allgeier learned to remain humble and became a driving force. Before going to BYU, he worked at the local Walmart as the cart corral guy. His mom took out loans to pay his tuition. He worked hard, showed up early, and stayed late. His college career kind of started that way. He became a gym rat.

gettyimages-1236697380.jpg

As a freshman, he had nine rushes for 49 yards and played in four games. He also returned two kickoffs. BYU moved him to linebacker for his sophomore campaign. He had 19 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one forced fumble, and played in all 13 games. He also returned two kickoffs.

The defensive move was temporary as the coaching staff flipped him back to running back for his junior year. He responded with 1,130 yards on 150 carries with 13 touchdowns. He also had a 7.5 yards per carry average, which was a career high.

In his senior year, he busted out for 1,601 yards on 276 carries with 23 TDs, a 5.8 average per attempt, and caught 28 balls for 199 yards. He was named Second Team All-American, was the Independence Bowl MVP, and was named the NCAA rushing touchdowns co-leader. BYU was an independent, so no conference accolades were issued. In the 31-28 loss to UAB in the Independence Bowl, Allgeier scored three touchdowns with 192 yards on 27 carries.

That 2021 season also had an Allgeier highlight.

BYU would end this season 10-2-0 after going 11-1-0 the year before. In Week 3 of Allgeier’s senior season, the pass rush of Arizona State was fierce. QB Jaren Hall was in the grasp of DE Michael Matus. Hall attempted to hit a receiver, but instead, LB Merlin Robertson intercepted the ball, who had nothing but green in front of him.

As Robertson approached the 40-yard line, two BYU offensive guys could be seen giving up chase. But then, a white jersey with the number 25 is seen coming on hard. And gaining. It is Allgeier. He catches up at the 17-yard line, jumps on Robertson, and in the process punches the ball out as a BYU teammate recovers the loose ball. No pick-six. No great field position. No loss of possession either.

After the game, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake stated:

“It doesn’t surprise anybody on this team or anybody around the program that knows this young man. Tyler is much faster than people give him credit for. Most people would go to make the tackle, and this guy comes out of nowhere. It’s a good thing he can punch on target because if it were a little bit higher, it would not be a good thing for us. He’ll do whatever it takes for the team. I feel like we have a bunch of guys on this team that would be willing to do that. It was his time to make the play, and hopefully we can keep relying on big-time plays and effort like that.”

And did Allgeier stand up and raise his arms in triumph? Did he take off his helmet as the nearest TV camera approached? Did he taunt the fallen linebacker? Did he run into the end zone and pantomime pulling back his chest jersey to reveal a Superman emblem?

None of this happened. Allgeier simply got up and walked back to the sideline.

All in a day’s work.

On to the NFL

At the NFL Combine, Allgeier ran a 4.6 in the 40, had a vertical jump of 33”, did 10’-0” in the broad jump, and benched 225 pounds 21 reps.

In 2021, the Falcons had just gone 7-10-0 with Cordarrelle Patterson as their leading rusher with just 618 yards. The franchise ranked #31 in rushing. Atlanta had the #8 pick in the 2022 college draft and selected WR Drake London. Allgeier was taken in the fifth round to help with the anemic rushing attack.

LINK: 3 SNEAKY GOOD FREE AGENTS THE CARDINALS SHOULD NOTICE

He played in 16 games and ended the season with 1,035 yards on 210 carries with 53 first down conversions and three TDs. He also had 16 receptions for 139 yards and another score. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team as the Falcons again finished 7-10-0.

imagn-27710341.jpg

For Allgeier (5’-10”, 225 pounds), things looked promising. He was the starting running back for an NFL team and had led them in rushing yardage. From being offered a half scholarship to preferred walk-on to now being the bellcow for a club in the NFL. He had finally made it.

The Falcons again had the #8 draft pick. Quarterbacks Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson all went in the top four picks. The Las Vegas Raiders were on the clock at pick #7 and needed a running back. Bijan Robinson of Texas was still on the board. But the Raiders took DE Tyree Wilson instead. With Atlanta next, they selected Robinson.

Allgeier found out rather quickly that in the NFL, things can be fleeting. In a single moment, with a grown man holding an index card standing at a podium, uttering a single sentence, Allgeier went from a starting running back who was voted to the NFL All-Rookie Team to RB2. All those blocks on a blitzing safety, or the YAC struggles, or eclipsing the 1,000-yard plateau, all of it meant little. The Falcons were bringing in a stallion.

And if you believe that after the Falcons drafted Robinson so high in the draft, that this basically placed Allgeier in the recycle bin, you are partially correct. It has stifled him. In the next three years, his production was 683 yards, 644 yards, and 514 yards. His carries dropped from 210 in his rookie year to 186, 137, and 143. He became a very good back to an afterthought.

The Cardinals are hoping that he has the drive to come in and become the starter if Conner is unable to, or to unseat Conner and become the bellcow that he is.

Allgeier has been dating his high school sweetheart, Danielle Rogers, and now maybe it will be a wedding in the desert? His Instagram is @_ty.allgeier, his X is @tylerallgeier25, and his Tik Tok is @tylerallgeierenjoyer.

The Arizona Cardinals have made some moves… allegedly.

Remember, while these are 99% done, they cannot be officially done in free agency until 1:00 p.m. Arizona time on Wednesday March 11, 2026.

What we know so far for the Arizona Cardinals 2026 NFL Free Agency moves.

Official Moves:

  • DT L.J. Collier one-year deal
  • P Blake Gillikin one-year deal
  • K Chad Ryland one-year deal

Bringing back Collier made sense, they lack depth along the defensive line, while Gillikin was incredible when healthy last year, and Ryland dealt with a revolving door of holders. Good re-signs for the Cardinals.

Pending Moves:

  • QB Gardner Minshew one-year deal
  • WR Kendrick Bourne two-year deal
  • G Isaac Seumalo three-year deal
  • RB Tyler Allgeier two-year deal
  • DL Roy Lopez two-year deal

Pending Loss:

  • S Jalen Thompson to Cowboys

What move did you like the most, and which one left you scratching your head?

The big rumor today… The Arizona Cardinals may move Jacoby Brissett still.

“Brissett is generally expected to be gone.” https://t.co/tkgIKAzkis

— Johnny Venerable (@JohnnyVenerable) March 10, 2026

The issue with this one is… No one knows what the Cardinals are going to do, for better or worse. Remember, the NFL was actually shocked that Jonathan Gannon was let go, so unless the teams that are talking to the Cardinals about Jacoby, then no one really knows.

Need to Know! Meet new Cardinals’ DT Roy Lopez III

After losing 26 games in the past two seasons, the Arizona Cardinals had a ton of holes to fill. Some of it would come in April’s NFL draft, while the remainder would become solid in this year’s free agency.

And now, here it is: 2026 NFL free agency tampering period. Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort has been very busy with several key signings.

Detroit Lions losing DT Roy Lopez to Cardinals in free agency https://t.co/RK8CfpCrQl

— Pride of Detroit (@PrideOfDetroit) March 9, 2026

One thing he needed to address was the defensive tackle. Calais Campbell is a free agent, and so far, no news of him inking another one-year deal. Last year’s first-round rookie Walter Nolen looked pretty good – when he wasn’t hurt. Dalvin Tomlinson was released. P.J. Mustipher is an exclusive rights free agent, so he may be in camp this year. Or not.

RELATED: CARDINALS FREE AGENCY TRACKER

So, Ossenfort wasted no time in bringing in quality help. He brought back DT Roy Lopez, III and inked him to a two-year, $11.5 million deal with $7 million in guaranteed money.

Sound familiar? To any Cardinals fan, yeah. Yeah, he sounds familiar. He should. He played for Arizona back in 2023 and 2024, then scooted to the Detroit Lions last year. So, maybe it is like divorcing your partner and then marrying them again? Whatever analogy you have, Lopez III (6’-2”, 312 pounds) is back in the building.

He is just 28 years old, so he has a ton of football left in him. Lopez III left the Cardinals and signed a one-year deal with the Lions in last year’s free agency period. With Detroit, he had 30 total tackles with two sacks.

What is Lopez III’s story? How can he help this Cardinals defense?

Beginnings

Lopez III is homegrown. He grew up in Gilbert, Arizona, and went to Mesquite High School.

Roy-Lopez-HS.jpg

He was already 6’-3” tall and weighed 295 pounds, so football was perfect for him. He was always the biggest kid. When he signed up for football at the age of eight, they placed him with the eighth graders because of his size, and they didn’t want him to hurt little kids.

His father, Roy Jr., is a longtime football coach, spending 33 years at the high school level in the State of Arizona and twice named Coach of the Year.

Lopez III could bench 395 pounds, clean jerk 355, and squat 565. Needless to say, Lopez III was very strong. He played defensive tackle and center. In his senior season, he totaled 53 sacks with six sacks and 17 tackles for loss.

gettyimages-899648616.jpg

Lopez, III, was named to the honor roll several years in a row. He is one of three siblings, but the only male. He was a wrestling star, going 113-3 in his high school years and a two-time state wrestling champion. He is also known as a high-character player.

Despite being named the “Arizona Defensive Lineman of the Year,” he had few schools interested in him playing football at their program, especially being a two-star recruit, and ended up at New Mexico State to play defensive tackle.

As a freshman, instead of being redshirted, they played him in all 11 games with seven starts. The following year, he was now the full-time starter playing in all 13 contests with 39 tackles. In his junior season, he started all 12 matches and tallied 63 tackles and a team-high 12.5 tackles for loss, plus four sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.

Throughout all of his football seasons at every level, Lopez III had been durable, but in his senior season, he sustained an injury and only played four games. Recorded 11 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks on the year.

On to the NFL

Lopez III was projected as a Day 3 prospect, and sure enough, he was taken in Round 6 by the Houston Texans. He signed a four-year deal for $3.6 million, which included a $182,836 signing bonus and $182,836 guaranteed.

He had a terrific rookie camp but did not start right away. But in Week 2, he was named the starting DT next to Maliek Collins. Lopez III then started every game with the exception of the Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a soft tissue injury. In his second season, he played in every game with 14 starts.

In his third training camp, Lopez III suffered a minor hamstring injury that just would not heal properly, so he missed almost every preseason game plus valuable practice sessions. Houston had a new head coach in DeMeco Ryans, who brought in Matt Burke as the DC. They signed DT Sheldon Rankins away from the New York Jets in free agency, who was a seasoned veteran. During camp, Rankins was named the new starting RDT.

On the final cutdown, Lopez III was released. The Texans waived him with an injury designation, but he went unclaimed on waivers and reverted to IR. One month later, the Cardinals signed him to their practice squad and then pulled him up three days later.

He was on the defensive line rotation, so he got plenty of playing time. In his two seasons with Arizona from 2023-2024, Lopez III had 30 games played with 21 starts, 70 total tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 4 QB hits, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble plus 1 fumble recovery, 3 batted passes, 13 pressures, 3 knockdowns, 9 hurries, and 4 missed tackles.

Detroit then signed him in last year’s free agency period to a one-year deal, where he had 30 tackles and 2 sacks.

So, why did the Cardinals bring Lopez III back, and then give him a two-year deal? Two words: Nick Rallis.

Arizona’s DC Rallis was with the team back when Lopez III played here for the first time. He wanted to keep the DT when he meandered off to Detroit for a calendar year. Rallis knew that Lopez III was never going to put up huge numbers and stats, but he is a beast against the run. His Pro Football Focus grade last year was 68.7, not great, but better than most. But more importantly, he will hunt down ballcarriers.

Like most defensive coordinators, Rallis will rotate his defensive line all game long, usually with four guys and sometimes a fifth. This allows his players to get some breathing time and remain hydrated, plus they will have decent legs in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the offensive line never subs in and out during a match.

Detroit fans are not happy with him leaving. They are still questioning why their GM did not sign him to an extension during last season when they had the chance.

Did not expect him to leave the franchise, especially how well he played last season. This is definitely a loss for the Lions. https://t.co/t0hJMMgM3h

— Kory Woods, MSW (@KoryEWoods) March 9, 2026

Even with all the starts, Lopez III has never played over half the defensive snaps in a game. This is by design so that he isn’t dead tired late in the game. In his two seasons with Arizona, he had 395 snaps (45%) and 467 snaps (46%). Last year with Detroit, those numbers were 425 (39%).

And Lopez III will be making more money. His one-year deal with the Lions was for $3.5 million, and with the two-year contract Ossenfort signed off on, the NFL Network is reporting the package is worth up to $11.5 million if Lopez III checks all the boxes.

gettyimages-2184188533.jpg

Not to mention, Lopez III is a community guy. He loves the state, he loved the Cardinals growing up, and he is now home with a new head coach. He also has his own charity called “The Roy Lopez Foundation,” and he offers a youth football camp each year.

Happy opening day of free agency one and all.

The Arizona Cardinals heading into the 2026 Free Agency period have the following that should become official today when allowed:

  • OT Matt Pryor one-year deal
  • QB Gardner Minshew one-year deal
  • WR Kendrick Bourne two-year deal
  • G Isaac Seumalo three-year deal
  • RB Tyler Allgeier two-year deal
  • DL Roy Lopez two-year deal

Along with the moves that we know are official because they were re-signings for the team:

  • DT L.J. Collier one-year deal
  • P Blake Gillikin one-year deal
  • K Chad Ryland one-year deal

All of that and we are looking at the Cardinals still needing help at linebacker, offensive line, defensive line and probably the quarterback position.

However, the last one will probably not be addressed until 2027, which is fun to know that the team is looking at another tank job, the third in four seasons with Monti Ossenfort at the helm.

Let’s hope for some exciting movement today.

  • Arizona Cardinals bring back Bam Knight on one-year deal

Need to Know! Meet new Cardinals’ WR Kendrick Bourne

The Arizona Cardinals have several positions that need quality bodies, and other rooms that, on the surface, appear to be good. Like tight end. Or cornerback. And maybe receiver?

Or, maybe not. The Cardinals’ receivers have two really good ones in Michael Wilson and Marv Harrison. But, after that? Everyone knows a good offense needs at least four good receivers in order to move the ball effectively.

RELATED: CARDINALS FREE AGENCY TRACKER

There are several receivers already under contract before free agency began: Xavier Weaver, Tejhaun Palmer, Andre Baccellia, Bryson Green, Jalen Brooks, along with Wilson and Harrison. Ihmir Smith-Marsette was signed to a reserve/future contract. Free agents include Greg Dortch, Simi Fehoko, and Zay Jones.

The issue here is that the roster is devoid of a capable slot guy plus a WR4. That was filled by both Dortch and Jones, who may or may not return, but both can currently be signed by any club.

Arizona GM Monti Ossenfort signed a receiver from the San Francisco 49ers that should fill one of these two positions of need: Kendrick Bourne. San Fran signed Mike Evans, so Bourne would have been the odd man out.

Know anything about Bourne? Can he provide a spark to this new offense?

Beginnings

Bourne, age 30, grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon, which sits along the Willamette River that leads north to Portland. He is of Samoan descent.

He went to Benson Tech in Portland and got in trouble often. Bourne went through a lot of things, like stealing stuff and getting caught, just being in trouble, being suspended, and skipping school. Of course, all of this meant his grades weren’t good.

Until his senior year. That’s when he transferred to Milwaukie Academy of the Arts in Milwaukie. An assistant coach named Don Johnson helped Bourne with his issues and provided him with mentorship. Coach Johnson gave him direction, and suddenly his grades began to improve as the football season progressed. Johnson showed Bourne that he had a path in college on the football field, but they didn’t accept dummies.

The work in the field didn’t matter if the work in the classroom isn’t on a parallel. Suddenly, Bourne had options.

He played basketball and was a receiver and safety on the football team. He had 54 receptions for 1,292 yards, a 23.9 yards per catch average, and 18 touchdowns. Bourne also had 14 carries for 100 yards with another score. In all, he had six 100-yard receiving games.

His basketball team was the State 5A runners-up in Oregon in the 2011-12 season.

As a senior, he was named First Team All-Northwest Oregon Conference at receiver and Second Team All-Northwest Oregon Conference at safety.

At season’s end, he was invited to play in the annual Les Schwab All-Star football game, plus the Polynesian All-American Bowl in La Mirada, California.

Bourne’s coaches were expecting some of the bigger schools to notice him, such as Oregon, Washington, and Oregon State. But those schools red-flagged him because of all the trouble he got into while at Benson Tech. In the technology age, stuff follows you.

Instead, he had full-ride scholarship offers from Portland State, Eastern Washington, Montana, and Idaho. Bourne chose Eastern Washington, located in Cheney, Washington, just southwest of Spokane along I-90.

Instead of being redshirted, Eastern Washington played him right off as a backup receiver and had just seven catches all year. That changed the following season as he played in all 14 games with nine starts. Bourne had 52 catches for 814 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named Honorable Mention All-Big Sky Conference.

His junior year is when it all started coming together. His teammate was WR Cooper Kupp. He was getting a name for himself for being able to snag bad balls and make circus catches. Bourne was labeled a “third-down and Red Zone specialist.”

Bourne had 73 receptions for 998 yards, a 13.7-yard average per catch, and scored eight TDs. He was now ranked in FCS receiving yards, finishing at #15. He scored on a 98-yard passing play, and his final snap of the season was a 63-yard touchdown run against Portland State. He earned Second Team All-Big Sky honors.

As a senior, Bourne had a good year catching 79 balls with 13 starts and gaining 1,201 yards while scoring seven times. In the process, Bourne ended his career with a 39-game streak of catching at least one pass. He was selected Second Team All-Big Sky Conference and voted to the Hero Sports All-America Third Team.

His pre-draft measurables were as follows: 40 – 4.55; vertical jump – 36.0”; broad jump – 10’-5”; bench press lifting 225 pounds – 10 reps; wingspan – 6’-4 5/9”; hand span – 9 1/8”; arm length – 32.5”.

All he needed now was to be drafted into the NFL.

On to the NFL

Bourne (6’-1”, 205 pounds) had a pre-draft grade of a Day 3 pick. Instead, the draft came and went, and he was now an undrafted rookie free agent. His agent’s phone lit up with calls from numerous clubs wanting to sign him for the rookie mini-camp. It was a circus of calls wanting his services, even though those same teams that were foaming at the mouth to get him passed on him at least seven times.

gettyimages-2251922552.jpg

It is unheard of for a team to offer an undrafted rookie a long-term deal, much less a good contract with money up front. But the 49ers inked him to a three-year, $1.67 million deal with a signing bonus of $5,000 and $25,000 guaranteed. Great googly moogly.

He had a great camp and made the final roster listed on the depth chart as WR5. At the time, the lead receivers were Marquise Goodwin and Pierre Garcon. Needless to say, rookie receivers listed at the bottom of the depth chart don’t get a lot of offensive snaps. No starts, 16 receptions for 257 yards.

For the next three seasons, Bourne got playing time, but his production numbers were just so-so. He signed a one-year extension in 2020 and did have 667 yards that year. He also scored 11 touchdowns, which is accumulated for all four years in San Fran. Nothing noticeable, but getting bi-weekly checks to play pro football.

The following season, he went into free agency and inked a three-year deal worth $15 million with the New England Patriots. He had 70 targets and caught 55 balls for a career-high 800 yards with five touchdowns, a 14.5 yards per reception average, and 32 first down conversions.

His 2022 training camp wasn’t the best. After balling out the year before, the 49ers’ coaching staff was expecting more out of him going into his second year with the Pats. He began Week 1 as WR3 with Mac Jones at QB and Jakobi Meyers and DeVante Parker as starting receivers.

Bourne finished the 2023 season with 37 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns in eight games and five starts. Despite just average numbers, he signed an extension for a three-year, $33 million contract. He suffered a foot injury in training camp and began the season on the PUP list. Right before the Week 5 game against the Miami Dolphins, he was activated and played the remainder of the season. He finished with nine starts in 12 games, 38 targets, 28 catches for 305 yards and one TD.

Last year, Bourne had an average training camp that was not helped by a foot sprain that he attempted to play through. He was asked to take a pay cut in which he was in the second year of his contract, making $11 million a year. He refused. Then, New England tried to trade him, but no takers. Finally, he made the final roster at the conclusion of training camp.

He then asked to be released because he explained he felt “devalued”, which the Patriots surprisingly granted. New England had plenty of receiver help, so they just continued about their day.

Bourne explained his rationale to Aaliyan Mohammed of New England Sports Network:

“Before I got released, that’s when all the conversations were happening between my agent and the front office about the pay cut. That’s what ultimately led to me being released and us asking for a release. I couldn’t let myself be devalued to a vet minimum because once they get you there, they kinda got you there. That’s where it got tricky. It was my agent’s and my decision to ask for my release.”

He was then signed by the 49ers for a second stint. Bourne’s new contract was a one-year deal for $5 million. So, he voided a year of pay for $6 million less, times two. Go figure. Plus, he missed out on several playoff checks and a Super Bowl experience.

His 2025 stats? 16 games played with eight starts, 53 targets, 37 receptions, 551 yards, a 14.9 yards per catch average, zero touchdowns, 27 first down conversions, 165 YAC, and 594 offensive snaps (57%).

The 49ers ended up 12-5 and qualified for the postseason. Bourne played in the playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks, but did not register any stats.

Bourne has always been involved in community efforts. While with the Niners, he helped with ServiceNow in a program that provided laptop computers to assist around 20 students who were college-bound.

Bourne married his wife, Kendrick, in 2023 with one child.

And now Bourne remains in the division with the Cardinals. He’s a mid-level guy with a high-priced wife. Though Bourne doesn’t possess high-end speed, he runs good routes and has a knack for making catches on important downs. He’s tough, he’s a good teammate, and he does well when he gets the looks.

He has the opportunity to become a big piece of this new offense. He is experienced, but he is never going to look better than the two guys at the top of the depth chart. He can provide good service in the slot and produce. But he will never become the “main guy.” He has been in this West Coast offense and is a good fit for Arizona.
