2026 NHL Trade Deadline Tracker: Up-To-Date Deadline Day Moves

The NHL Trade Deadline is TODAY! I’ll do my best to keep this space up-to-date with all of the latest moves from around the league.

  • The Minnesota Wild have reportedly acquired forward Bobby Brink from the Philadelphia Flyers for defenseman David Jiříček.
  • The San Jose Sharks signed goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic to a two-year extension that has a $3M cap hit.

Blackhawks 3, Canucks 6 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

It took the Blackhawks 68 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. In the 84 seconds that followed, Vancouver scored twice. The Canucks scored a third goal — on just their seventh shot on net — at 6:32 into the first period. For a team that was down to just one NHL netminder available, this was the absolute worst case scenario. Thankfully, the Canucks suck, too. And the Blackhawks scored the next goal at exactly 12 minutes into the first to cut the lead in half. We all should have bet the over apparently.

The Blackhawks dominated most of the second period, but had nothing to show for it thanks to a couple missed shots and a couple posts. With 42 seconds left, a redirected point shot finally found the mark and the score was tied going to the room after 40 minutes.

Brock Boeser gave the Canucks a 4-3 lead with a power play goal early in the third. Just a bad goal… Arvid Söderblom lofted a rebound across the net face and Boeser was streaking past the back door for a tap-in. An empty net goal with 86 seconds left in regulation from Max Sasson closed the books on Friday night. For good measure, the Canucks scored a second into the empty net.

Star 1: Frank Nazar

Nazar had the only assist on the Blackhawks’ first goal of the night and then scored the tying goal inside the final minute of the second. He had really good jump all night, and it finally paid off. He hadn’t scored a goal since Jan. 30 and hadn’t had a multi-point game since Jan. 29.

GOAL: Frank Nazar is finally on the board as he deflects in a point shot to tie the game! pic.twitter.com/e0Wj1NA83V

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 7, 2026

Star 2: Ilya Mikheyev

Mikheyev scored a desperately-needed goal when the Blackhawks were down 3-1 to cut the Canucks’ lead in half. He then picked up a second assist on the game-tying goal late in the second period.

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 7, 2026

Star 3: Ryan Donato

Donato got the Blackhawks on the board first with a nice individual effort to score his 14th of the season. He looked like a guy who saw an opportunity after the deadline to make a bigger impact and jumped at it. I liked how aggressively he was looking to score.

Key Takeaways

  • Landon Slaggert was easily the most physical player on the Blackhawks in the first period. He was credited with only one hit, but I would take the over on that because I watched him hit more than that. With only 11 forwards dressed and the more physical vets gone, someone needed to hit somebody. Slaggert also did a nice job on the penalty kill. Thru two periods, Slaggert led the Blackhawks at 5-on-5 with three scoring chances and two high danger chances. Unfortunately, he had the best view of Boeser’s go-ahead power play goal in the third. Late in the third it appeared Slaggert tied the game but the officials ruled he kicked it in. No goal.
  • Spencer Knight was sick, so Söderblom got the start. Caydon Edwards was the EBUG. So the terrible start was especially troubling…
  • Even though the Blackhawks only have 12 forwards on the NHL roster at this point, they opted to scratch Sam Lafferty and roll with seven defensemen, including Ethan Del Mastro. Del Mastro skated a whole 5:38 thru two periods.
  • The Blackhawks got two power plays in the first period. The first one stunk. The second one was killed by Sam Rinzel tripping a guy after 30 seconds of an advantage.
  • Artyom Levshunov remained the second right-side defenseman on the penalty kill (paired with Wyatt Kaiser).
  • Ryan Greene took over centering the top penalty kill with Mikheyev. Slaggert spent time with Teuvo Teräväinen on the second unit.

Deadline Wrap-Up, Bedard’s Next Deal, Gold at the UC, Foligno’s Goodbye, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I’m gonna be honest, folks. I had a really nicely wrapped Blackhawks bullets this morning that I was going to add to but learning that Troy Murray has passed away is a gut punch I wasn’t ready for. So I’m going to open our day after the trade deadline with a request that you keep Troy’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days. He was such a wonderful human. I’m legitimately heartbroken.

  • Yesterday was a long, crazy, busy day around the NHL. For the Blackhawks, it was a tough one that started with captain Nick Foligno getting traded to Minnesota and ended roughly 12 hours later with the Canucks burying a couple empty net goals to finish a bad loss for the Hawks.
  • Unpacking a trade deadline is never easy, especially when the Blackhawks are moving out guys who meant so much in the room. General manager Kyle Davidson spoke with the media after the deadline and talked about a wide range of topics. I have tried to break some of that out over the past hours for you into three pieces. Here are the links to those, as well as my trade deadline grades.
  • Davidson was asked about Connor Bedard‘s contract situation. There is no reason to worry about it.
#Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said the Connor Bedard contract extension talks are likely to be an end-of-season conversation at this point.

No concern though that it'll get done, obviously. Matter of when, not if.

  • The Blackhawks had a special guest in the house last night.

  • Evgeni Malkin was suspended for five games for slashing Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin.
  • In the OHL last night, Jack Pridham joined Marek Vanacker in the 40-goal club with a goal in the first period. He added an empty-net goal in the third period to climb to 41 on the season.

Blackhawks Recalling Nick Lardis, Drew Commesso from Rockford

Before playing a tough back-to-back in Dallas and then home against Utah on Sunday and Monday, the Blackhawks announced a couple roster additions from Rockford.

Forward Nick Lardis and goalie Drew Commesso will join the team for the trip to Dallas on Sunday.

The Blackhawks are calling up Nick Lardis and Drew Commesso, Blashill said.

Spencer Knight won’t travel to Dallas due to his illness.

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) March 7, 2026

Spencer Knight was a late scratch on Friday night because of an illness, so Commesso will provide depth and, if Knight isn’t good to go by Monday, likely start one of the games.

Remembering Troy, NHL’s Youngest, Two for Behm, Hockey East Drama, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

I’m still trying to piece myself together a little bit today after learning of the passing of Troy Murray. We had a unique relationship. He would always give me an elbow to the ribs when he walked by and smile over his shoulder, making sure it found the mark. If he beat me into the press box for a home game, I would find a small cup of either popcorn or gummy bears at my seat. My spot in the box is the closest to the radio booth, so I would look over and he’d wink at me thru the window. There were other incredibly special moments between us. He was truly one of one.

If you get a chance, listen to the tremendous tribute put together by Peggy Kusinski and Dionne Miller on ESPN 1000 yesterday. They spoke with Eddie Olczyk, Pat Foley, Bob Verdi and Denis Savard. Just be prepared to cry. There were so many other really special tributes on social media yesterday from current and former (still active) Blackhawks, his former teammates, the NHL teams he played for, Hockey Canada, and the University of North Dakota. I’ll just leave you with three, but encourage you to do some wandering around social media.

Heartbreaking to hear the news today on the passing of @muzz19. Always had so much respect for Troy as a former @NHLBlackhawks and even better person. RIP my friend.

Heaven just acquired one of the very, very best, and much too young. You fought like a lion. You lived life to its fullest. May you rest in peace Muzz. You will be remembered forever. Love ya.

  • Here’s your striking number of the day, but it’s one that shouldn’t come as a huge surprise: the Chicago Blackhawks are now the youngest team in the NHL. And they’re almost a half year younger than the next-youngest team. The Blackhawks also have the least NHL games experience in the league by a significant margin. I share this so when you’re throwing the remote at your television at times during the rest of the season you maybe remember there’s a learning curve taking place in real time.
Updated NHL average ages after the trade deadline:

1. Chicago – 26.14
2. Montreal – 26.51
3. Vancouver – 26.88
4. Buffalo – 27.43
5. San Jose – 27.54
6. Philadelphia – 27.64
7. St. Louis – 27.64
8. NY Rangers – 27.68
9. Nashville – 27.83
10. Calgary – 27.93
11. Boston – 28.28…

— NHL Rosters (@NHL_Rosters) March 7, 2026
  • And the roster is going to get a couple more young faces in it tonight. Drew Commesso probably won’t be the starting goalie in Dallas (but tomorrow night at home is probable), but Nick Lardis figures to draw into the lineup so the Blackhawks can skate 12 forward and still sit Sam Lafferty (poor guy).
  • It sounds like Roope Hintz is going to miss some time for Dallas because of an injury he suffered in their last game. Michael Bunting will make his Dallas debut against the Blackhawks tonight.
  • Nathan Behm scored twice and added an assist in a big win last night for Kamloops. His second goal was the game-winner. Behm now has 82 points (36 goals, 46 assists) in 61 games in the WHL this season.

  • In the college ranks, John Mustard had one assist as Providence rolled over UConn to close the books on a magnificent regular season for the Friars.
  • Last night was a huge swing night in Hockey East. Václav Nestrašil had one assist as UMass beat New Hampshire 4-2. With that win, and a series of other teams losing, UMass flies up to the No. 2 seed in the Hockey East Tournament this week!
Teams 2,4,5,6 all lost in Hockey East – allowing Massachusetts to swoop in and collect the 2 seed for the Hockey East Tournament. Not to mention, move up to 14 in the NPI.

Blackhawks 3, Stars 4 (OT) — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

After a less-than-ideal performance on Friday night, there will probably be Blackhawks fans who do nothing more than look at the score of this game and have something cheeky to say about Arvid Söderblom. If/When they do, you know they didn’t watch the game.

The Blackhawks scored the first goal again. This time, they also scored the game’s second goal — which they needed. Söderblom had a very good first period, allowing only one goal on a shot that looked like it was redirected a couple times between the initial shooter and it settling into the back of the net.

The second period saw the Blackhawks need almost 17 minutes to finally put a shot on net. Dallas only had seven shots on net at that point as both teams were skating hard and fast but also willing to block shots and take away passing lanes. The only reason the Hawks had a 2-1 lead still after 40 minutes was Söderblom.

Early in the second period, Frank Nazar got tripped and a loose puck hit off his body and directed back into the net off a save to tie the game. A second goal off a fluky play for Dallas. Justin Hryckowian scored a power play goal in the middle of the period to give Dallas a 3-2 lead. It took 56 minutes for the Blackhawks to get a power play and they had a few great looks on the advantage but couldn’t tie the game. They did tie the game inside the final two minutes with an extra attacker on the ice, however.

Dallas won the game 22 seconds into overtime.

Star 1: Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi scored the Blackhawks’ first goal of the afternoon in the first period. Later in the first, he tried to go between his own legs for a shot that just didn’t quite make it. He was active the entire first period again. He’s been so good this year. Thru two periods, Bertuzzi had three of the Blackhawks’ five high danger chances and was second on the team in shot attempts (four) and scoring chances (four) at 5-on-5.

GOAL: Tyler Bertuzzi redirects in Artyom Levshunov's shot to open the scoring. pic.twitter.com/qKq46HiGb1

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 8, 2026

Star 2: Arvid Söderblom

He made a lot of big, athletic saves in this game. Dallas’ first two goals were both off unfortunately fluky plays. Once again, he deserved a better outcome. Söderblom stopped 28 of 32 in the game.

Fantastic post-to-post save by Soderblom: pic.twitter.com/5lnkpwP24O

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 8, 2026

Star 3: Connor Bedard

Dallas might be the best defensive team in the entire NHL and it showed this evening. They did a terrific job of completely eliminating Bedard’s line and provided great clinic tape for the Blackhawks’ defense to watch on acquiring the puck and getting it out of their zone quickly. But Bedard didn’t go away quietly, and picked the right spot for a tremendous shot inside the final two minutes of regulation to tie the game.

Key Takeaways

  • Here’s Sam Rinzel‘s goal from the second period:
2-0 #Blackhawks

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) March 8, 2026
  • Oliver Moore got tangled up with Colin Blackwell just before Rinzel scored the Blackhawks’ second goal. He didn’t look like he was in good shape as he got some help from teammates to get off the ice and went straight to the room. He was ruled out after the first period.
  • Nazar picked up an assist on Bertuzzi’s goal in the first period, giving him a three-game point streak. He was second on the team with a 0.28 individual expected goals for thru two periods at 5-on-5. He added a second assist on the game-tying goal in the third period.
  • Artyom Levshunov was really good in the first period. He patiently waited for the shot-pass that went in off Bertuzzi’s stick and then set Bertuzzi up for the between-the-legs attempt later. He also had a big blocked shot in the first period and cleaned up a couple netfront scrambles. He got caught gambling a couple times in the second and third periods, but didn’t give up a big play. Another improved night from Levshunov.
  • The Blackhawks were out-shot 8-4 in the second period and had only 10 shots on net thru 40 minutes. Even being out-shot 21-10 in the books, the Blackhawks had a 1.23 to 1.02 expected goals for advantage at 5-on-5 (per Natural Stat Trick).
  • Thru two periods at 5-on-5, Ryan Donato led the Blackhawks with six shot attempts and five individual scoring chances. Donato and Bertuzzi had 10 combined shot attempts thru two periods. Blackhawks not named Donato or Bertuzzi had 13.
  • Teuvo Teräväinen had two assists in the game.

With Options Now Available, It’s Time for André Burakovsky to Get Right

Blackhawks fans continue to lose their **** that André Burakovsky remains in the lineup, and on Connor Bedard‘s wing for most of his ice time. The Blackhawks coaches continue to like what they’re seeing from Burakovsky, even if he has only one assist and only 17 shots on goal to show for his last 18 appearances (293:47 of ice time dating back to Jan. 9).

For the past couple months while we’ve all been on the Burakovsky Struggle Bus, the rationale for him remaining in the lineup and working his way out of the slump has been fairly simple: the Blackhawks need to get to the salary floor, and his $5.5M cap hit next season helps get there quicker.

However, his play has made it harder to project him into a role on next year’s Blackhawks, and his cap number makes it harder to move him (even if Chicago has two retention spots available next season and nobody else to use one on).

Andre Burakovsky Chicago Blackhawks

Perry Nelson-Imagn Images

When Andrew Mangiapane entered the chat, things got a little more interesting. He plays a fast two-way game and has scored two goals since Burakovsky’s last marker. He doesn’t have two championship rings at home, but he did arrive with a $3.6M cap commitment thru next year.

If the Blackhawks buy out Burakovsky, his cap number drops from $5.5M to $3M for the 2026-27 season, which is slightly higher than trading him at 50 percent retention. Burakovsky would carry over $1.25M in cap hit to the 2027-28 season in the event he’s bought out this summer.

I’m not saying the Blackhawks have any plans of buying anyone out right now. And Burakovsky could turn things around in the fourth quarter of the season and make things interesting this summer and in training camp. We’ve seen crazier scenarios play out (just go watch some of the ways Bears games ended this past season).

But Mangiapane at minimum gives the Blackhawks another veteran forward option with a cap commitment attached for next season — and that should put some pressure on Burakovsky to earn his spot in the lineup.

Blackhawks Rookie Oliver Moore to Miss “Significant Time”

Blackhawks rookie forward Oliver Moore went into the boards hard on Sunday night in Dallas, immediately favoring his lower right leg. He limped off the ice and went straight to the room; he did not return to the game and was ruled out for Monday night’s Blackhawks game before the team boarded the plane to come home.

Oliver Moore will not return after suffering an injury on this play: pic.twitter.com/Ax2RSWp6Cd

— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) March 8, 2026

The Blackhawks did some additional testing on Moore’s injury on Monday, and the news from head coach Jeff Blashill wasn’t great. Moore will miss “significant time,” and Blashill said the Hawks will know more “in a few weeks.” Moore was seen leaving the United Center in a walking boot.

With only five weeks left in the Blackhawks’ regular season, his rookie campaign is very much in jeopardy of being over. That’s a shame because Moore was getting more comfortable in the NHL, especially at center. And his opportunity to play more down the middle became bigger when the Blackhawks traded Jason Dickinson and Nick Foligno away before the deadline.

Can We Get Some More Nick Lardis Please?

After the chaotic NHL Trade Deadline on Friday that saw captain Nick Foligno leave, the Blackhawks called Nick Lardis and goaltender Drew Commesso up from Rockford after practice on Saturday to join the team for the back-to-back in Dallas and then home against Utah. There was some excitement to get a more extended look from Lardis, whose offense could help the Hawks down the stretch.

After getting on the ice for only 10:08 in Dallas, Lardis only skated 7:18 on Monday night — which doesn’t make a portion of the Blackhawks’ fan base happy. He had two shot attempts and one individual scoring chance in his limited ice time against the Mammoth.

I get it. Lardis is a talented sniper who can put the puck in the net and what do we want more than to see the next generation of Blackhawks scoring goals, right?

Would I prefer we see more of Lardis? Absolutely. But there are a few factors to keep in mind.

First, the Blackhawks like having Ryan Greene on Connor Bedard‘s wing for two reasons: he’s good there, and he can take/win a faceoff if Bedard gets tossed out of the circle. Of course on the other wing is André Burakovsky… which will remain a point of contention even though he finally scored on Monday night. But against some more physical teams like Dallas and Utah, having a veteran on that line makes sense.

Similarly, obviously the line of Tyler Bertuzzi, Frank Nazar and Teuvo Teräväinen has been good when they’ve been together this year.

Second, in the wake of the Blackhawks trading away Foligno, Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach, the dust is still settling on what a lineup could be. The Blackhawks coaches want to experiment with Andrew Mangiapane skating on a line with Ilya Mikheyev to see if there’s something there. I, like the coaches, like the early returns of that duo. They were really good against Utah.

Now let’s layer onto those thoughts the unfortunate development that Oliver Moore left Lardis’ first game back with the Blackhawks early because of an injury — one that might end his rookie season prematurely.

In a perfect world, I would love to see Lardis and Moore spend time together. If that’s with Landon Slaggert, fine. He attacks pucks and he’s hard to play against. If that’s with Ryan Donato, also a solid option.

But the injury to Moore meant Donato was skating between Mikheyev and Mangiapane, leaving Lardis to get table scraps with Slaggert and Sam Lafferty.

Moore’s injury may make for an intriguing situation, however. As Hockey East’s conference tournament begins this week, the end of Sacha Boisvert‘s collegiate career may come soon. A door may have just opened for him to get some NHL run this season to start his professional career. And that might come with Lardis on his wing — which could be fun to watch.

C for Connor? Better Bedard? Redemptions, Commesso’s Camaraderie, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Tracey Myers at NHL.com wrote about the obvious move the Blackhawks will make this summer (after signing him to healthy extension): Connor Bedard will be the team’s next captain. All signs point to that, and he had a great opportunity to learn from one of the most respected leaders in the game in Nick Foligno to start his NHL career.

Here’s what Bedard told Tracey about his approach to leadership (as a 20-year-old):

“I think my genuine self is a leader, so I’m not really going to change. It would be weird if I started giving speeches and stuff, you know? That’s not who I am, especially at this stage of my life. Obviously, you get vocal as you go on, but I’m not [silent] or anything. I’ll talk. (Foligno) obviously was the biggest role of that and was the loudest voice in our room. It’s just an opportunity for everyone to grow in that sense.”
Connor Bedard ready to take over as Blackhawks’ leader following trades, by @Tramyers_NHL https://t.co/ivECDppK19

— Mike Morreale (@mikemorrealeNHL) March 9, 2026
  • Here’s what Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said about Bedard as a leader when he spoke with the media following the NHL Trade Deadline on Friday:
“Whether it’s Connor or any young player, it takes time to get comfortable in this league, and there’s a lot of feeling-out process and understanding where your place within that leadership structure is,” Davidson said. “I believe this year, coming into this season, Connor, we obviously saw his play, but just his voice and his ability to command that room and be a presence within the room really took a step forward. You feel it when you’re around him. You see it when the group’s just hanging out around the rink or on the road. He’s a guy who people gravitate toward, and I believe he’ll continue to grow in that respect and find his own leadership style. Everyone’s different.

“We’ve had a great example of the leadership at the top of that pyramid with Nick over the last number of years, and whoever steps into that spot or takes on more of that lead role is not going to be Nick. It’s going to be, I’m sure, a different style but equally as effective.”
  • Bedard was really, really good last night. It was one of his better performances of the entire season. He led the Blackhawks with 11 shot attempts and 7 individual scoring chances, and Bedard’s 88.61 on-ice expected goals percentage at 5-on-5 was his highest of the season. He was also credited with four hits and won 7 of 14 faceoffs in the game. And picked up two more assists. Bedard now has four points in his last four games (two multi-point games).
  • There were two pretty impressive redemption moments in last night’s game. The first game from a guy who’s been under fire from Blackhawks fans for weeks. After André Burakovsky whiffed on a wide open net on the power play, he was able to finally get on the board. He denied that it was a lacrosse-style goal after the game, only giving himself credit for “Half one?” But his relief was still overflowing after the game.
  • I want you to look at the uncropped version of the image I used for our postgame last night. The elation on the face of Burakovsky was understandable. But look at Bedard in the lower left corner. Everyone in red was so visibly happy for him to finally get that monkey off his back.

Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

  • The other redemption came much quicker — and it came from one of the hottest Blackhawks right now. Frank Nazar, who had the pass to Burakovsky that he whiffed on, had a pretty big hiccup of his own in overtime.

  • Moments later, Nazar got another look and didn’t miss. To borrow from the great philosopher Harry Dunne, he went and totally redeemed himself.

  • I asked Drew Commesso after the game if it was nice having so many familiar faces from Rockford around him in the Blackhawks’ lineup. His response was another reminder of how the Blackhawks are investing not only in players developing into impactful NHL players, but also in their relationships with each other.
“All my best friends are here, whenever I’m here, I’m just so happy to be around with these guys,” Commesso said after the win. “I played with a bunch of them for a few years, we’re so close off the ice… It’s just so much fun being here with them.”
  • It’s little plays like this that make me think there might be something there with Ryan Greene riding shotgun on Bedard’s line. He’s such a smart player, but there’s going to come at time soon where this is a goal. Heck, this probably should have been if not for a ridiculous save!

  • The tributes in the radio booth last night were incredibly touching. John Wiedeman brought the beautiful bouquet back from Dallas with him to join two arrangements in the booth with a red Centennial sweater bearing Troy Murray’s name and number. John worked with Troy for so long, I really don’t know how he kept his composure to call a terrific game last night. He’s a rock. But, as he said, that’s what Troy would have wanted from us: to get on with the hockey. And it warmed my heart to see Nick Olczyk in the press box last night as well.
  • Finally, I just want to shoutout Darren Pang. He and Troy were close friends, and he’s been asked to handle the national desk for TNT on Sunday night and then work between the benches on an emotional night in Chicago last night. The tears were real. This was a tough one for a lot of people in the United Center last night because Troy was so universally loved. But Panger was the guy who had to say it into a mic with a TV camera on him. And he did a magnificent job. Much love, Panger. Well done.

Hockey East Tourney Begins, Frondell Scores, Knies Interest Remains, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Hockey East Tournament begins tonight, and Blackhawks fans should be paying attention to Boston University. Sacha Boisvert‘s season could come to an early end with a loss, making him potentially available to join the Hawks soon. But another prospect in the conference, John Mustard, has opened some eyes during a stellar sophomore season that helped Providence win their first-ever outright regular season title. Good read here form Ben Pope on Mustard’s hot dog season.

Blackhawks prospect John Mustard has enjoyed a sophomore breakout at Providence with better shooting and decision-making.

"Whenever you give him the puck in the offensive zone, he’s a threat."

  • Can I interest you in an Anton Frondell goal from Tuesday? Here’s his 18th of the year.

  • Just throwing this in here for the sake of burying the important stuff… but I’ve heard from multiple folks after the trade deadline that the Blackhawks have remained on the “call me if he’s ever available” list for Toronto’s Matthew Knies. Remember in 2022, Kyle Davidson was at the one-inch line on a blockbuster trade that would have sent Brandon Hagel and Marc-Andre Fleury to the Leafs for a package including Knies that was supposedly declined by Brendan Shanahan. From what I’m hearing, the Hawks haven’t waivered in their desire to land Knies. We’ll see if Toronto makes him available this coming summer… and if the Hawks take another swing.
  • Corey Pronman at The Athletic updated his prospect rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft on Tuesday and… holy **** he’s got right-handed defenseman…. Chase Reid at No. 1 overall, ahead of Gavin McKenna!
  • You’re telling me Auston “Can’t Get The Leafs Into the Second Round” Matthews can captain the USA to an Olympic gold medal but Aaron Judge strikes out to end a USA loss to Italy in the World Baseball Classic??
  • Finally, I’m so glad this was posted yesterday. It’s good to hear Troy’s voice and see his wonderful smile, especially talking about the old barn and a legendary moment in Blackhawks history.

Blackhawks Prospect Sacha Boisvert a Healthy Scratch for Boston University

As I wrote in our Hockey East Tournament preview, Boston University’s first round playoff game is scheduled for this evening against Patrick Sharp’s Vermont Catamounts. Here’s the lineup they posted earlier this evening for the game:

You might notice a name missing: Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert. He’s a healthy scratch tonight for the Terriers. Of course that’s driving a lot of speculation that Boisvert, who’s been open about his intention of turning pro after this season, could be joining the Blackhawks sooner than later.

Re: Boisvert as a healthy scratch for BU tonight. I can't say I'm surprised.

I do wonder if this accelerates him signing with Chicago (even if BU wins tonight). We'll see.

We’ll have to wait to see if Boisvert signs soon. If Boston University loses tonight, they have no chance of making the NCAA tournament and Boisvert could theoretically sign any time.

Blackhawks Young Center Depth is Still Sorting Itself Out

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill had an interesting answer to a question about Ryan Greene‘s long-term roster fit after practice on Wednesday. The question came off the assumption that Greene has been viewed as Jason Dickinson’s most likely successor as the Blackhawks’ shut-down center.

“We’ve drafted a lot of centers, to be honest with you, which is a good thing,” Blashill said. “Mooresy [Oliver Moore] is a natural center. Greener’s played center. [Roman] Kantserov’s playing center full-time. [Anton] Frondell’s played a lot of center. You obviously have Frankie [Nazar]. So, some guys are going to play the wing, some guys are going to play center.”

Obviously missing from that list of center options is Connor Bedard, who seems to be locked into the Blackhawks’ top line center spot for the foreseeable future.

Blashill has talked about how much more comfortable and effective Moore has been at center vs. on the wing. And I will also note that we’ve previously talked about the fact that Nazar’s play really took off at the World Championship last year when USA Hockey moved him to the wing… which is noteworthy because current Blackhawks assistant coach Mike Vellucci was on that coaching staff.

However, the part of Blashill’s answer that got my attention was the mention of Kantserov playing center in the KHL this season. I shared an interview the 21-year-old gave back in January in which he talked about his production really taking off this season since he moved to the middle; he leads the KHL in goals.

Sacha Boisvert and AJ Spellacy have also spent a good portion of their seasons playing center, but weren’t mentioned by Blashill. Spellacy specifically did a nice job at center for the USA at the World Juniors, and has already signed his entry-level contract. There’s a lot of buzz around Boisvert’s immediate future after he was scratched by Boston University on Wednesday night.

Entering Thursday night’s game in Utah, here are the centers who remain on the Blackhawks’ roster with their total number of faceoffs and win percentage thus far this season:

Total FaceoffsFaceoff %
Ryan Greene67544.3
Frank Nazar61446.1
Connor Bedard40645.3
Ryan Donato23348.5
Oliver Moore20548.3

Since Jan. 1, the numbers have shifted a bit. Only three remaining Blackhawks — Greene, Nazar and Moore — have taken at least 100 faceoffs since the start of the calendar year.

Bedard didn’t take many faceoffs in January when he came back from his shoulder injury, but had returned to the dot since the Olympic break. Even though Greene took most of the faceoffs, once the puck was on the ice Bedard was effectively playing center for that line.

Nazar been getting increasingly comfortable in his first full NHL season, and it’s showing at the dot. Since Jan. 1, Nazar has taken 201 faceoffs and won 52.2 percent of them. Nazar’s winning 52.4 of his faceoffs since the Olympic break.

Moore’s injury likely opens the door for Boisvert to potentially get a look at center down the stretch whenever he signs.

These are all questions that won’t be answered overnight. But the lineups we could see with young guys playing down the middle in training camp in September could make for a lot of fun conversation.
