The Cold, Hard Truth – Commanders Have the Least Talented Roster in the NFC East

I don’t like to sugar-coat things. If something looks FANTASTIC, I like to point it out. If something looks BAD, I will bring that to the forefront.

In this series, “The Cold, Hard Truth”, I will give my analysis on various parts of the team in an effort to allow healthy discussions on the specific topics at hand.

Washington has the least talented overall roster in the NFC East – by a LONG shot:

General managers and head coaches always speak about competing within, and winning, your division. It’s the most sure-fire way to get your team into the playoffs.

For the Commanders, there is some major work to be done to make them competitive with the rest of the NFC East from an overall talent perspective. Although there are other factors that contribute to winning – coaching, health, and even some luck; talent is usually what separates the good teams from the bad.

Below is a breakdown of how each team in the division ranks on a positional basis as things stand BEFORE the offseason starts. I wanted to do this now and compare it to how these teams look after free agency and the NFL draft so we can get the full perspective.

This should be a fun exercise to see which teams improved and which stayed the same or got worse during the offseason.

Quarterback:

  • Commanders
  • Cowboys
  • Eagles
  • Giants

The Commanders take this one in convincing fashion. Being quarterback is the most important position in the league, this will hold some weight in overall rankings.

Running Back:

  • Eagles
  • Cowboys
  • Giants
  • Commanders

The Eagles take this category running away. There are some really good running backs in free agency and a guy by the name of Love in the NFL draft so these rankings can change a bit heading into May, although it will be tough for anyone to catch Philly. The Giants are the ones to watch here if Skattebo returns to full health.

Wide Receiver:

  • Cowboys
  • Eagles
  • Giants
  • Commanders

Dallas is the clear-cut favorite here and part of that is their recent decision to place the franchise tag on George Pickens. What happens with A.J. Brown over these next two months will be telling. The Giants are a sneaky up-and-comer while Washington is pulling up the rear – but has a chance to make some noise over these next six weeks.

Tight End:

  • Eagles
  • Cowboys
  • Giants
  • Commanders

This is a toss-up between the Eagles and Cowboys with the Eagles getting a slight edge now before Goedert’s fate is decided. The Giants are a team to watch as they have a nice young option in Theo Johnson.

Offensive Line:

  • Eagles
  • Cowboys
  • Commanders
  • Giants

Washington could be number two here if they hadn’t just created a big hole by releasing Tyler Biadasz. If they land a solid center this offseason, they could make a jump up based on potential alone.

Interior Defensive Line

  • Eagles
  • Giants
  • Commanders
  • Cowboys

The Eagles absolutely DESTROY the rest of the division here, despite the Giants boasting Dexter Lawrence.

EDGE:

  • Giants
  • Eagles
  • Cowboys
  • Commanders

The Giants are absolutely stacked at the EDGE position and it’s really not a close race when you look at both production and potential. Philly may lose some guys to free agency, but they still have talent and youth waiting in the wings. This is arguably Washington’s weakest current position, and it will take significant resources to bump this group up.

Off-the-Ball Linebacker:

  • Eagles
  • Cowboys
  • Giants
  • Commanders

This is another area where Washington is pretty lacking in young, producing talent. That said, a few strategic offseason moves can significantly see them rise on this list. The Eagles may lose one of their top young backers, but they have guys on the roster who can still keep them on top in the division.

Cornerback:

  • Eagles
  • Cowboys
  • Giants
  • Commanders

Yet another positional group where the Eagles are the clear-cut winners. Having two All-Pros will tend to do that. Washington has some young guys who need to prove it to help them raise their position here.

Safety:

  • Giants
  • Cowboys
  • Eagles
  • Commanders

There are not a lot of stand-out safeties in the NFC East, however the Giants have the best combination of talent within the division. As things currently stand, Washington doesn’t have a player on their current roster who would start for any other team in the division’s back end. Hopefully that can change this offseason.

Overall Rankings:

  1. Eagles
  2. Cowboys
  3. Giants
  4. Commanders

The Eagles are the runaway favorites for most talented team in the NFC East, and I believe there is a significant gap between them and Dallas. The Commanders have the edge over the Giants in some key areas (most noticeably quarterback and offensive line); however, they fall significantly behind on defense. Although New York is a bit younger at the skill positions, they are a team on the rise who could potentially challenge Dallas for second best overall talent in the division with a good offseason.

Thankfully, Washington has the most salary cap space in the division and also boasts the second-highest first-round draft pick (No. 7 overall). There is plenty of time for improvement, and it will be up to Adam Peters to make some roster additions that move the needle this offseason to get Washington back to a competitive position within the NFC East.

Although the current outlook looks grim, this article is TO BE CONTINUED…

Jake Moody re-signs with the Washington Commanders on 1-year deal

It was reported last week that the Washington Commanders weren’t going to tender restricted free agent kicker Jake Moody and he would become a free agent. Moody would have cost $3.52 million for the right of first refusal tender. General manager Adam Peters likely didnt want to use the tender when he could sign him to a lower cost, 1-year deal. Moody was 10 for 11 on field goals and extra points for the Commanders in six games last season.

The Commanders have not had stability at the kicker position in a long time. Moody is now under contract but the team should still be bringing in competition until they find a reliable, long-term kicker who can excel under the new special teams rules that have been implemented recently. Moody will be the third different opening day kicker in as many years if he wins the job.

Commanders fans have strong feelings about the replacement for Tyler Biadasz; Adam Peters is still (pretty much) The Man in Washington

gettyimages-2166656838.jpg

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - AUGUST 10: Lloyd Cushenberry III #79 of the Tennessee Titans warms up before the first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers at Nissan Stadium on August 10, 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans defeated the 49ers 17-13. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images) | Getty Images

In this week’s Reacts survey, we asked two questions.

Replacing Tyler Biadasz

In our first question, we focused on the fact that the Commanders recently cut starting center Tyler Biadasz, who has since reportedly signed a multi-year contract with the Chargers.

The decision to release Biadasz was a bit surprising, but not exactly shocking. After all, the offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury ‘parted ways’ with the Commanders in January, and soon after, it was reported that offensive line coach Bobby Johnson was fired. Clearly, change was in the air.

Regular readers of Hogs Haven’s weekly post-game articles in the Stats & Snaps series would have seen regular criticism of Biadasz’s pass blocking from author MattinBrisVegas in the latter half of the 2025 season:

Week 9

allowed 2 hurries in 36 pass blocking snaps (5.6% Pressure Rate).

WeeK 10

allowed 1 hurry and 1 sack in 28 dropbacks. His 7.1% Pressure Rate was around twice the acceptable limit for an iOL. That might not be a concern if it was just this game, but he has been allowing pressures and sacks consistently.

Week 13

allowed 2 QB hurries, for a 3.4% Pressure Rate, which is fairly high for an iOL. This season he has allowed pressures on 3.2% of dropbacks.

Week 14

allowed 2 QB hurries. His 5.9% Pressure Rate was once again about twice what you would like to see at iOL.

Week 16

allowed 1 sack and 1 hurry. His 7.4% Pressure Rate allowed is more than twice the acceptable limit for iOL. Ideally, a starting center should be under 3%. This has been a consistent theme in the last 6 games for Biadasz. For the season, he has allowed pressure on 3.6% of dropbacks, which is just a little above the acceptable limit.

Of course, with the promotion of David Blough to offensive coordinator, more change is expected, though there’s a bit of guesswork involved in knowing what the new offense will look like. Dan Quinn and Blough have both talked openly about lining up under center more often and using no-huddle less often. Many observers have speculated that the team may also rely on zone blocking as the primary scheme.

Perhaps all of this — and maybe more — combined to convince the Commanders powers that be that it was time to part company with Biadasz.

Of course, the natural question is: What’s the plan to replace him?

When Biadasz was injured at the end of the 2025 season, he was replaced by Nick Allegretti. It was hard to overlook the fact that Allegretti signed a contract extension last week. With respect to players currently on the roster, he looks like the natural replacement.

But with free agency and the draft upcoming, there are opportunities to find a replacement there or via trade.

When asked what the solution is, Hogs Haven readers responding to our survey strongly supported the idea that the team’s 2026 starting center will be signed in veteran free agency, which kicks off at noon on Monday, when the ‘legal tampering’ period officially begins.

So, who are the top free agent centers?

  • Lloyd Cushenberry
  • Conner McGovern
  • Ethan Pocic
  • Cade Mays
  • Tyler Lindebaum

While reasonable people can disagree on exact rankings, the five players listed here probably comprise the top of the market. These players are likely to get signed to contracts fairly quickly in the free agency process. If none of them come to terms with Washington next week, then it may be time to consider the possibility that Plan A is to ride with Allegretti.

I think it’s safe to assume that the 96% of respondents who didn’t vote for a drafted rookie to replace Biadasz simply assume that neither pick 7 nor 71 would be used on the center position, and that Washington was unlikely to find a starting center on Day 3 of the draft.

General Manager Adam Peters

Following the 5-win 2025 season, many fans and observers have openly questioned the job being done by GM Adam Peters, who is entering his 3rd year with the Commanders. There are even some postulating that Peters could lose his job after the ‘26 or ‘27 season if fortunes don’t change quickly.

To gauge how widespread this concern is, we asked readers to rate their level of confidence in the GM (actually, this is the 2nd time we’ve asked since the end of the 2025 regular season). The results are very similar to the last time we asked two months ago.

temp-Adam-Peters-Reacts.jpg

Sixty percent of respondents said that they were either “confident” or “absolutely confident’ in Adam Peters, with only 9% of respondents saying that they were ”deeply worried” or had “zero confidence”. Peters continues to have broad support from the fan base, though the tough ‘25 season has left about a third of our respondents feeling some doubts and wanting to see a very different plan this offseason, and much better results in the ‘26 regular season. Many people have expressed that the minimum bar the team needs to clear for Dan Quinn and Adam Peters to be worthy of full fan confidence is a return to the playoffs this season.

So far this offseason

Next week, Adam Peters will be able to jump into free agency; in late April, he will have his 3rd shot at running the Commanders draft.

So far, this offseason, he has restricted himself to dealing with players who were on the Washington roster in 2025. He has cut two players and extended eight others.

Cuts:

  • C Tyler Biadasz
  • CB Marshon Lattimore

Extensions

  • P Tress Way
  • K Jake Moody
  • OL Andrew Wylie
  • OL Nick Allegretti (early extension)
  • DL Shy Tuttle
  • DL Deatrich Wise
  • DL Drake Jackson
  • WR Treylon Burks

The Commanders currently have 56 players under contract, with 6 draft picks and, per Over the Cap, $87.6m in cap space — 4th most behind the Raiders, Chargers and Titans. Washington will need about $6m in cap space to sign its draft picks and will need to set aside another $6m or so as a contingency for signing players as in-season injury replacements, so Peters can probably spend up to about $75m in 2026 cap space in veteran free agency.

Commanders need to go big or go home in free agency – offensive edition

Last year’s free agency haul was, well, to put it bluntly, MEH! 2026 on the other hand is setting up to be one of the best free agent classes I have seen in quite some time.

Washington needs reinforcements all over the roster and has the money to be big players in free agency.

It’s time for Adam Peters to go big or go home!

Calling all “weapons”; calling all “weapons” – Jayden Daniels NEEDS help!

Peters and Quinn need to do their best to surround superstar Jayden Daniels with more dynamic players on offense. Peters did a magnificent job securing much-needed protection for the young passer last offseason. Now he needs to get him more weapons, so he doesn’t have to shoulder the entire load on offense.

We don’t yet know what new offensive coordinator David Blough’s offense will look like, but John Keim (and others) have mentioned multiple times they expect his scheme to resemble the one Ben Johnson ran in Detroit. This should be more plays under center, much more pre-snap motion, plenty of horizontal routes designed to take advantage of the intermediate area (including extensive tight end usage in the middle of the field), and deep shots created off of play action.

There will also be a heavy focus on a more efficient and extensive outside-zone running game that will be designed to keep defenses honest and eventually open things up for more one-on-one matchups in the passing game.

With that said, Daniels needs to be surrounded with better weapons, and here are some I feel could fit into what we’d like to do offensively.

Running Back

  • Kenneth Walker (25): Walker will NOT come cheap, but the former second-round pick possesses rare speed (4.38 40) and contact balance in a compact frame (5’9” 211). He’s a good receiver out of the backfield collecting 133 receptions for 1,005 yards over 58 career games played. He’s averaged 4.3 yards per carry over his first four years in the league and he has just three career fumbles, losing none. The newly crowned Super Bowl MVP would look great in burgundy and gold and would pair nicely with second-year back Bill Croskey-Merritt.
  • Travis Etienne (27): Etienne should have a very robust market as the former first-round draft pick possess a rare skillset made for today’s NFL. At 5’10” 215, he can excel in an outside zone rushing scheme and is an excellent receiver out of the backfield who is a mismatch for linebackers and safeties. He had some fumbling issues early in his career but he’s since cleaned those up. He’s been relatively health since missing his rookie year with a lisfranc injury.

Wide Receiver

  • Alec Pierce (25): Pierce, who won’t turn 26 until May, is the biggest name wideout to hit free agency this year, and it’s based more on the potential the 6’3” 211 pounder could have as a number one threat on the outside. His 4.33 speed combined with a career 18.6 average yards per reception offers teams an elite deep threat who is in his prime. He’ll command a large salary, but he’s viewed as a building block to pair with a talented young quarterback.
  • Wan’Dale Robinson (25): Robinson doesn’t possess wide-receiver-one traits, but when he was given the opportunity to be the go-to guy with the Giants in 2025, he didn’t disappoint, putting up career highs in receiving yards (1,014), touchdowns (4) and yards per catch (11.0). He was just one reception from tying his career best after posting 92 catches from rookie quarterback Jaxon Dart. He boasts excellent speed (4.38 40) and elite change-of-direction skills that allow him to consistently create separation.
  • Romeo Doubs (25): At 6’2”, 205 pounds, Doubs would bring a hard-nosed, workman-like mentality to this new offense. He’s not a blazer like Pierce or Robinson, but he’s extremely reliable over the middle and is not afraid to make tough catches in traffic. He’s also a very solid blocker in the run game – something I feel Blough will value.

Tight End

  • Chig Okonkwo (26): Okonkwo is a young, athletic, ascending MOVE tight end coming off his rookie deal who plays more like a jumbo wide receiver than a traditional tight end. He put up good numbers as a Titan despite putrid quarterback play, and his best days could be ahead in an offense that likes to move their tight end around to exploit coverage mismatches. His 4.5 speed and excellent understanding of man and zone coverages will allow him to become a young quarterback’s best friend. Don’t be fooled by his lack of protypical size – Chig is a very good blocker.
  • Isaiah Likely (25): Likely will be a sought after name this offseason as teams look to find that new MOVE tight end who can create mismatches all over the field. He’s not going to wow you with blazing open-field speed, but he understands coverage, leverage going in and out of breaks and can be excellent after the catch. He reminds me of former Washington tight end Jordan Reed.

With roughly 72-75 million to spend in effective cap space, and the ability to create more with extensions for both Tunsil and Payne, Adam Peters needs to be aggressive this offseason to find weapons for Jayden Daniels.

Getting one player from each of the above groups would go a long way to drastically improving the Commanders new offensive attack under David Blough, and give fans renewed hope that Peters is indeed embarking on a rebuild focused on young, ascending talent to support his dynamic rookie passer.

After last season’s 5-12 finish, one thing is abundantly clear for Washington football fans. The team needs to add a significant amount of talent during the offseason. While Adam Peters will continue to use the draft, the Commanders GM will also have an estimated $82 million in cap space at his disposal after various projected restructures, releases, and dead cap hits. Jayden Daniels is entering his third year, and the clock is ticking on the franchise quarterback’s rookie contract, making this arguably the most critical free agency of the new millennium for Washington. With free agency set to open on March 11th, Hogs Haven will be working to bring you articles on potential targets to fill various positions of need:

Top Needs:

Secondary Needs:

In each article, we will briefly summarize the team’s current situation at the position, traits the coaching staff will prioritize, along with a list of the top free agents and a detailed look at a few players that fit the team at different projected average annual values (AAV), typically one high-, one moderate-, and one low-cost contract.

Today, we finish our free agent series with the running backs. If you would like an overview of the defensive tackle position, be sure to read the linked article by Hogs Haven member, Shogun of Harlem. Position Summary

Currently Under Contract:

  • Bill Croskey-Merritt: On 2nd-year of rookie deal.

Significant Free Agents:

  • Chris Rodriguez (RFA)
  • Jeremy McNichols
  • Austin Ekeler

Often discussed last season, the Commanders have no running backs under contract beyond seventh-round selection Bill Croskey-Merritt. Fortunately, the much hyped running back delivered a solid season, but Bill is not an every-down back and another piece is needed. Chris Rodriguez filled that role after Ekeler’s season-ending injury and enjoyed the best season of his career. Still, Rodriguez looked limited as well and the decision on the restricted free agent’s tender looms before the start of free agency. The right of first refusal would be the cheapest option available at a projected $3.52 million. Jeremy McNichols also enjoyed a great season and while Adam Peters certainly needs to upgrade the room, there should be some interest in bringing McNichols back. Austin Ekeler’s loss was a noticeable blow to the offense, however there is reason to think his career might be over. David Blough praised Bill Merritt in his introductory presser, but admitted with only one player under contract, additions would be needed. Washington is expected to move to a zone-based run scheme under Blough.

Spotrac Projection: 2 years, $13,627,624

AAV: $6.8M

If the Commanders want a lead back that excels in both the rushing and receiving game, here is the top choice. A first-round pick in the 2021 draft, Etienne missed his rookie campaign with a Lisfranc injury. However, he has become a focal point of Jacksonville’s offense, crossing the 1,000-yard mark three times in the past four years. Along with his 25 rushing touchdowns, Travis has been active in the receiving game with 1,338 receiving yards and 7 receiving touchdowns. Six of those touchdowns came last season as he demonstrated a natural receiving style out of the backfield.

The Jaguars blend both zone and gap schemes, but offensive coordinator Liam Coen tailors his play calls around his backs. He utilized a number of different calls, including wide zone to rejuvenate Etienne’s play. The running back has the vision and burst to succeed in a high-volume zone rushing attack:

— NFL (@NFL) December 7, 2025

Travis does have a few flaws, including an upright running style that can lead to lower body injuries and a propensity for turning over the football. He has recorded 7 total fumbles during his career, with 5 coming in 2022, but cleaned up his ball security last season and was only credited with one. Etienne also requires a high volume of carries to be successful, and even his improved yards per carry last season (4.3) ranks him in the middle of all running backs. Still, he has all the necessary tools to be the primary back in David Blough’s rushing attack and would pair well with Bill Merritt.

I think Spotrac has his AAV too low, with reports already surfacing that Etienne Jr. will land a contract north of $10M. Those kinds of numbers feel like a luxury for a team with multiple roster holes, but if Adam Peters wants to improve his backfield with a versatile and powerful workhorse player, Travis Etienne fits the bill.

If the Commanders don’t want to break the bank with Etienne, there are several mid-tier options available. Rachaad White makes a lot of sense, and I profiled him earlier in the offseason. While White brings a lot in the receiving department, he is somewhat lacking as a runner. Conversely, Tyler Allgeier would be a good fit for a zone scheme, but offers little in the receiving game. Instead, we will focus on another free agent that provides value in both areas.

Kenneth Gainwell was a fifth-round selection by the Eagles in the 2021 draft and went on to have modest success as a rookie. Operating as a rotational back, he continued to provide both rushing and receiving yards during his time in Philadelphia including a 112-yard, 1-TD performance versus the Giants in the 2022 divisional playoffs. The running back signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in free agency and quickly became a role player behind Jaylen Warren. His 486 receiving yards last season ranked fifth among running backs. Kenneth was also effective on the ground with a 47% success rate on 114 carries for 537 yards and five touchdowns. Gainwell also produced in a lead role when Warren missed time, rushing 19 times for 99 yards and two touchdowns in Week 4 and soaking up seven passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns in Week 12. Johnathan Heitritter of Steelers Depot did a nice film review of Gainwell’s skill set that reviews several plays like this one:

Kenneth Gainwell picked up 33 rush yards over expected on this 38-yard gain, per @NextGenStats 👏

— NFL+ (@NFLPlus) December 16, 2025

A shifty, elusive back with good vision, Gainwell explodes vertically. Carrying a very reasonable $3M AAV, there’s isn’t much to not like about Kenneth, but if there is a knock, it would be that he is undersized. That hasn’t kept him from being incredibly durable. Gainwell has only missed two regular season games in his entire career, but keep in mind he typically plays in a rotational role. The free agent does not have the frame to be a lead back but could pair nicely with another player to keep both fresh and available for a full season.

As Bill Barnwell of ESPN stated on his show:

You don’t want to pay for a Kenneth Walker, or a Travis Etienne? I think Gainwell is gonna fit in right in that middle tier. He’s gonna get less than what Javonte Williams got. And I think he could be every bit as good of a player.

Spotrac Projection: N/A

AAV: $2.7M (Author Projection)

Our last free agent has the most complex situation of all. A restricted rights free agent, Baltimore has several tender options to assign to Keaton Mitchell. Much like Rodriguez, the one that makes the most sense is the first right of refusal tender, again projected to be $3.5 million. If the Ravens decide to assign the tender to Mitchell, he will remain under team control. If another team extends a higher offer, the Ravens must match or lose him to the better deal with no compensation. Alternatively, Eric DeCosta may decide Mitchell is not worth the value of the tender and let Keaton become an unrestricted free agent. Given the number of pending extensions the Ravens currently are facing this could be a realistic outcome.

As a rookie, Keaton Mitchell broke out midway through the season after being activated from injured reserve, exploding for 138 yards on nine carries and scoring his first rushing touchdown. He continued his impressive play before tearing his ACL in Week 15. Mitchell finished his rookie season with 47 carries for 396 yards and two rushing touchdowns in eight games. He started the 2024 season on the PUP list and ended up seeing limited action in only five games.

Keaton started as a healthy scratch this season, but eventually worked into a rotational role behind Derrick Henry and Justice Hill providing a spark for the offense with his speed. He finished the season with 59 carries for 341 yards and touchdown including an impressive 5.8 yards per carry average. Mitchell also added nine receptions for 63 yards on twelve targets. When healthy, Keaton has 4.3 speed, excellent vision, and quick processing at the line:

— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) December 7, 2025

All of this fits nicely for a team looking to utilize more zone schemes and in need of a playmaker in the backfield. Mitchell is undersized, needs work in pass protection, and clearly has a lengthy injury history, but if the Ravens decide not to tender Keaton, Adam Peters should be quick to inquire about signing the explosive playmaker. Paired with the threat of Jayden Daniels, Mitchell could find plenty of opportunities in the open field to utilize his speed.

Bottom Line

The Commanders are going to add to their backfield in free agency. Depending on how they view Chris Rodriguez, there might be more than one addition. Much like the other position groups in this series, Adam Peters must prioritize what the team needs and evaluate how much to invest in order to maximize the draft and turn the team around in 2026. With the clock ticking on Jayden Daniels’ rookie contract, he cannot afford to make the wrong decisions this coming week.

Washington Commanders 2026 Free Agency Rumors Tracker: Interest in Evans, Linderbaum, and several RBs

The salary cap has officially been set at $301.2 million for the 2026 season. The NFL’s legal tampering period starts tomorrow at 12 pm. The new league year starts on Wednesday, March 11th at 4pm. Contracts reported for free agents with expiring contracts during this two day window won’t be official until the new league year starts. Washington is still trying to sign a few of their pending free agents before they hit the market. They have already signed new contracts with six players, and released two for salary cap and performance.

The Commanders are expected to be active in free agency as they look to improve on last season’s disappointing 5-12 season. They have new offensive and defensive coordinators in David Blough and Daronte Jones respectively, and will be focused on building around franchise QB Jayden Daniels along with rebuilding the defense. Deebo Samuel is one of the biggest names on this pending free agent list, and a lot of people think he’ll enter free agency a year after Washington traded a 5th-round pick for him. Washington also has several old veterans that aren’t expected to return for another year.

Several trades and cuts have already been made, and rumors have been flying since last week’s Combine. What moves will Washington make before free agency officially begins?

Riggo’s Rag

Adam Peters has the NFL watching as Commanders prepare something big

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, people around the league are expecting the Commanders to be aggressive. The senior insider even revealed that this could be Peters’ busiest offseason since taking charge. Considering how he completely gutted the roster during his first recruitment period, this is quite a statement.

“The pulse inside the league is that this year could be Washington’s most active offseason of the Adam Peters era that began in 2024. Washington has a roster with holes, nearly $90 million in cap space and star quarterback Jayden Daniels on a rookie deal. So, while the Commanders might not spend big on every position, they will be a presence.”

Fowler is one of the best and most well-connected insiders around. If this is the chatter in NFL circles, it suggests that Peters will turn over every stone and go on the front foot to put the Commanders in a more profitable position.

There is a lot of money to spend, but the Commanders also have a plethora of needs to fill. The defense needs a complete overhaul to put Daronte Jones’ grand plans into action. All three levels need quality acquisitions, given that this was the league’s worst unit by a considerable margin in 2025.

Washington also needs to provide firepower for quarterback Jayden Daniels at wide receiver and tight end. The Commanders are closely linked to several veteran running backs, including Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III. There are also questions along the offensive line, with starting left guard Chris Paul testing the market and center Tyler Biadasz already released.

There is a lot to get through. Peters won’t be sitting on his hands, but Washington remains a relatively attractive destination. They have grand plans for the future. They also have Daniels under center, who’ll be striving with everything he has to stay healthy and silence his doubters next season.

The time to attack is upon Peters. Fans should expect rapid developments and major statements of intent from the Commanders.

Commanders Wire

What if Marcus Mariota does not re-sign with the Commanders?

  • MALIK WILLIS: Isn’t it most likely that Willis gets offers to be paid as a starter? So Willis coming to Washington is not happening.
  • KYLER MURRAY: Well, perhaps, but don’t you hope he might prefer the David Blough playbook over Kliff Kingsbury’s? Perhaps Murray has matured to the point of admitting an NFL quarterback has to study during the week?
  • TUA TAGOVAILOA: The Dolphins are so upside-down with Tagovailoa. They absolutely owe him much more than they believe they could ever get out of him. What NFL GM would take on that contract in a trade? So look for him to be released and only be offered backup opportunities.
  • KIRK COUSINS: Would Cousins be willing to sign somewhere as strictly the backup? He is 37 now, but some contender would love to sign him to be their backup. Would the Colts or Chiefs be interested in Cousins being a fill-in starter until Daniel Jones and Patrick Mahomes are recovered from their late season injuries requiring surgery?
  • GENO SMITH: His opportunities of being paid as a starter appear to be in the past. He is going to have to settle for opportunities to be the backup.
  • JOE FLACCO: Yes, I know he is 41. But are you suggesting he is not a better option than than Sam Hartman or Josh Johnson?
  • RUSSELL WILSON: Perhaps as he has aged/matured, and is now a better locker room teammate than he was in previous stops?

Remember, the Commanders are not going to sign any quarterback to a contract to compete for the starting job. We are simply asking, if Mariota determines to sign elsewhere, to whom do Dan Quinn and Adam Peters turn to serve as their backup quarterback?

Five more who did not make our short list: Jimmy Garoppolo, Mitchell Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Gardinar Minshew, and Sam Ehlinger. That’s not an encouraging group to pick from if you’re the Commanders.

The Athletic (paywall)

Five potential Commanders targets to watch in free agency, including a playoff hero

Washington faces heightened urgency to build a contender around quarterback Jayden Daniels, which means when the NFL’s legal tampering window begins Monday at noon ET (and when new deals can be officially signed starting Wednesday at 4 p.m.), the Commanders should be spenders.

But where? And on whom?

The previous two years may not provide much of a guide. The Commanders’ focus has shifted since Peters gutted the roster in 2024 and then re-signed many of Washington’s own (older) veterans to one-year deals in 2025.

This year, the priority is to build the foundation by signing some younger players, especially those coming off their first NFL contracts, to longer deals, according to one person with direct knowledge of the Commanders’ approach.

The Commanders need to add speed across the board, provide more playmakers around Daniels and rebuild a defense that has lagged for years. Luckily for them, they have the means to accomplish this.

Rashid Shaheed, WR

Washington’s receiving corps was decimated by injuries last season, and their most frequently available option, Deebo Samuel, is now headed for free agency. The Commanders need a No. 2 behind Terry McLaurin, and they need to add speed. Enter Shaheed, an undrafted receiver out of Weber State who now has a pair of Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl ring.

Shaheed was probably going to have a healthy market after his run with the New Orleans Saints, but he bolstered his stock even more after he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks last season and proved to be one of the best acquisitions at the deadline. In Washington, he’d provide another deep threat who could double as their ace returner. (Counting the playoffs, he returned three kicks for touchdowns in 12 games with the Seahawks.)

Commanders Roundtable

Five Free Agent Edge Rushers Who Fit 2026 Washington Commanders

Boye Mafe, Seahawks

After shifting from starter to rotational piece under head coach Mike McDonald, Mafe still appeared in every game where he posted just two sacks and 31 total tackles. Mafe became a household name across the league after registering nine sacks in 2023 then six in 2024. But he was efficient when on the field as his 18.7% pass rush win rate ranked eighth among edge rushers and his 11.4% pressure rate ranked 17th. He’ll turn 28 midseason, joining the rest as younger options who add disruption to a Commanders front seven that lacked exactly that. ESPN projected a three year, $48 million deal with $25 million guaranteed.

What to Expect from Washington Commanders in Free Agency

Of course, Washington still enters free agency with one of the biggest questions still unanswered with Laremy Tunsil still expected to receive a contract extension, which could end up creating slightly more cap space this offseason depending how it ends up getting structured. While the expectation remains the two sides finalize his contract ahead of 2026, it remains a question for general manager Adam Peters to officially cross off heading into the rest of March.

It will be an active offseason for Washington with Monday at noon marking the first chance for general manager Adam Peters and the front office able to start making moves in the open market to begin filling the long list of roster holes.

Been holding Linderbaum as a potential dream too high as far as price tag, but if there were a bidding war or salary jump it would make sense for Adam Peters to make, this would be it. However, like many, I penciled Cade Mays into this conversation as well. https://t.co/igsYioI1zC

Commanders Wire

Commanders’ Laremy Tunsil hinting at big news ahead of free agency?

The legal negotiating period for NFL free agency opens at Noon ET on Monday. Free agents are eligible to begin negotiating with other teams, but cannot sign contracts until Wednesday, when the new NFL league year begins.

This deadline isn’t a concern for Tunsil or the Commanders. That’s because he has one year remaining on his current contract. Tunsil has a base salary of $20.9 million for 2026 with a cap number of $24.9 million, via Over the Cap. But make no mistake, Tunsil wants a deal done.

Tunsil was in the Washington area for a Wizards game recently. What did that mean? Maybe nothing. However, on Sunday, Tunsil was busy on his Instagram page, posting several images and videos of himself in a Commanders’ uniform from last season.

I enjoyed watching Laremy Tunsil’s IG stories just now. If you haven’t watched it yet, I think you should.

— CWallSports (@cwallse) March 8, 2026

It could mean that Tunsil is confident that a new deal with Washington is close. Otherwise, why the series of posts? Peters maintained optimism that a new deal with Tunsil will not drag on like the Terry McLaurin situation in 2025.

Washington LT Laremy Tunsil seems especially enthusiastic to be a #Commander today. 😂

Pretty opportune timing with legal tampering opening up tomorrow.

Will we hear breaking news soon? #RaiseHail pic.twitter.com/mf4kCfmidn

— George Carmi (@Gcarmi21) March 8, 2026

Rashawn Slater became the highest-paid offensive tackle in NFL history last season with a four-year extension worth $114 million, with $92 million in guaranteed money. While Slater is younger than Tunsil, the five-time Pro Bowler is expected to average around $30 million annually on his next deal.

The Commanders acquired Tunsil and a fourth-round pick from the Houston Texans last offseason for picks in the second (2026), third (2025) and fourth rounds (2026). Tunsil was phenomenal in his first season in Washington and the expectation is a deal will get done sooner rather than later.

Eagles have some big question marks with key defensive players as free agency kicks off

The next item for [GM} Howie [Roseman] is trying to keep Jaelan Phillips. We haven’t heard anything on that front. As much as Phillips likely wants to stay in Philly, his agent wants him to at least test the market. Khalil Mack just signed a 1-year deal to stay with the Chargers. He got $18M guaranteed.

The edge rusher market is very much up in the air right now. Mack and Crosby are gone. Trey Hendrickson will have several teams coming after him. The Vikings have let it be known that Jonathan Greenard is available via trade. Odafe Oweh and Phillips are two of the key targets. You just don’t know if people will throw huge money at them. Each player has some question marks. Let’s hope Howie can get something worked out with Phillips.

*****

Jalen Carter’s name was mentioned as part of some trade discussions. This may or may not mean anything. First, 31 other teams can call and ask about a player. That doesn’t mean he’s being shopped. The other thing to remember is that the Eagles get talked about a lot because of Howie’s reputation as a deal-maker. Not every report that comes out is true. Agents and other teams leak info to help create a market at times.

It is possible that the Eagles talked to other teams about Carter. If someone made a huge offer, Howie might be tempted. You’d rather not give up a special DT, but economics are a factor. The Eagles will have to extend Carter sometime soon. And he won’t be cheap.

Always consider your options.

5 free agent edge rushers Cowboys should pursue not named Trey Hendrickson

Malcolm Koonce

Koonce is a name that has been gaining steam after a breakout period where he showed he could be a nightmare for opposing blockers. His ability to bend around the edge and his refined hand techniques allowed him to rack up sacks in bunches, proving he is more than just a rotational body. He provides the high-energy wins that Dixon demands, often turning a stalemated play into a highlight reel moment through sheer will. He plays with the kind of chip on his shoulder that suggests he is still mad about a game of tag he lost in the third grade.

The Cowboys still have an opportunity to grab a Raiders edge rusher, albeit it's not the guy everyone was hoping for.

Malcolm Koonce has the speed and tenacity that the new coaching staff covets, and at a much lower price! pic.twitter.com/vb57GvJxnk

— Dan Rogers (@DannyPhantom24) March 7, 2026

Haason Reddick

Reddick is perhaps the most natural fit for the hybrid 3-4 outside linebacker role that this new staff wants to implement. A once consistent double-digit sack artist, Reddick is the prototype for a stand-up rusher who can drop into coverage just as easily as he can bury a quarterback. His age and recent performance will make him a more affordable option, but his bend, motor, and versatility provide a skillset that could be in play for a team that is looking for a veteran presence with some rebound upside.

3 safeties the Cowboys should consider in the draft

Zakee Wheatley, Penn State

What more can you say? It’s a pretty good class of safeties this year. Zakee Wheatley is a big, tall athlete at 6’3” who runs very well. Wheatley gets downhill in a hurry to deliver big hits. Thanks to his size and speed, he has good range to take away potential big plays in the secondary. He can play in a two-deep shell and handle playing as the single high safety. His best year in college came in 2024 when he had 96 tackles, a sack, and three interceptions. Wheatley will need to work on shedding blocks, especially when playing in the box. Wheatley is set to land between the second and third round.

NY Giants 2026 NFL Draft scouting report: Chris Johnson, CB, San Diego State

Chris Johsnon projects as a starting cornerback with scheme versatility at the NFL level.

The issues in Johnson’s profile – level of competition, arm length, “okay” mass – could give some teams pause and be enough to keep him out of the first round. However, his athleticism, instincts, and ball skills are all worthy of a first round selection. That could make him an incredible value at the top of the second round, and he should be a starter early in his career.

Johnson has the potential to be an impact player in the NFL if he lands in the right situation.

Final Word: A late first or early second round pick.

Sources: Trent McDuffie, Rams agree to 4-year, $124M extension

The Rams and star cornerback Trent McDuffie reached agreement Sunday on a record four-year, $124 million extension that includes $100 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The new contract makes McDuffie, 25, the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

Last Wednesday, the Rams agreed to acquire McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs for a package of picks that includes the No. 29 selection in the 2026 NFL draft. The trade and the deal can become official Wednesday at the start of the new league year.

Bills trading veteran CB Taron Johnson to Raiders for 2026 sixth-round pick

The Las Vegas Raiders are trading an undisclosed 2026 sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Buffalo Bills CB Taron Johnson and an undisclosed 2026 seventh-round selection, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday night.

The Raiders have two sixth round draft picks (one from the New York Jets) and the Bills have two seventh round draft picks (from the Dallas Cowboys and Jets).

Johnson was set to be released Friday, but the move was not made official prior to the league transaction wire’s release.

The 29-year-old Johnson will now be heading to Las Vegas with the Raiders making a move for the veteran CB.

Conflicting reports emerge as to whether Travis Kelce will test the market

As noted this afternoon, tight end Travis Kelce becomes a free agent tomorrow. Against that basic background are conflicting reports as to whether he’ll possibly play for a team other than the Chiefs.

Earlier tonight, The Athletic reported that Kelce is expected to return for a 14th NFL season, but that it’s not a “sure thing” he’ll re-sign with the Chiefs. Thereafter, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press pointed out his Scouting Combine-week report that, if Kelce plays, he’ll play only for the Chiefs, and won’t test the market.

Per The Athletic, Kelce’s agents are expected to talk to multiple teams once the negotiating period opens.

Here is latest from @JFowlerESPN on Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum as free agency nears: "The Raiders, Giants and Titans could be involved to some extent. The number should easily surpass $20 million per year."

NFL Teams Armed With Record Cap Space Set to Enter Free Agency

In advance of Wednesday’s start of the new league year and the opening of free agency, a 52-hour legal tampering period begins Monday at noon ET. During that window, teams can start negotiating with the agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents.

A subtle but significant change when the NFL's free agent negotiating window opens Monday: For the first time, clubs may conduct one video or phone call (maximum 1 hour) with up to five free agents, rather than communicating strictly through their agents as in past years.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 8, 2026

No contracts can be signed during that initial window, and teams are also prohibited from speaking directly with players. The initial window, however, allows teams to begin roster planning, advance salary cap strategies ahead of Wednesday, when all teams must be cap-compliant, and minimize back-door negotiations around the league.

Teams will have additional financial room to work with after the NFL set the 2026 salary cap at $301.2 million per team, a record amount and $22 million more than the 2025 level.

Current and former NFL stars to face Team USA in revamped Fanatics Flag Football Classic

The event was originally scheduled to be played at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but relocated to Los Angeles because of the war in the Middle East. It will still air on Fox Sports.

The new event will include three 12-player teams: two composed of a mix of current and former NFL stars or athletes outside of football, and a third represented by USA Football’s reigning IFAF world championship team.

One team will be captained by Tom Brady and Jalen Hurts, and coached by Sean Payton. A second team will be captained by Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels, and coached by Kyle Shanahan. Robert Saleh will serve as a defensive specialist for both teams.

The Brady/Hurts and Daniels/Burrow teams will draft their 12-person squads Wednesday from a pool of 24 current and former NFL players and athletes outside of football. The pod of players will include Saquon Barkley, Myles Garrett, Odell Beckham Jr., Rob Gronkowski and Logan Paul.

The U.S. men’s national team will be captained by Aamir Brown and Darrell “Housh” Doucette and coached by Jorge Cascudo. BMO Stadium also will host the 2028 Olympic flag football competition.

2026 NFL free agency: Ranking the top 100 players available

1. Trey Hendrickson, Edge

2025 team:
Cincinnati Bengals | Age entering 2026 season: 31

What he brings: Hendrickson is a relentless defender off the edge, with a deep toolbox of counters and a knack for making plays late in the down. In seven games last season, he had four sacks. His 17.5 sacks and 65 pressures in 2024 were league highs. Hendrickson would immediately upgrade just about any team’s defensive line.

i.png

2. Tyler Linderbaum, C

2025 team:
Baltimore Ravens | Age entering 2026 season: 26

What he brings: Linderbaum has a tone-setting mentality on the interior of the front, using elite foot speed and body control to match pass rushers or climb to the second level in the run game. His pass block win rate of 97.2% tied for second among 31 qualifying centers last season.

Still don’t agree with the decision to release Biadasz. Felt he was a good starting center. Linderbaum would be an upgrade to that would make the move more understandable

Chargers front office comes from Baltimore, where the Ravens are known to preserve the comp pick formula by signing released players. L.A. does just that this week by adding C Tyler Biadasz and FB Alec Ingold. https://t.co/rp2YIV8G3b

3. Jaelan Phillips, Edge

2025 team:
Philadelphia Eagles | Age entering 2026 season: 27

What he brings: With his long 6-foot-5 frame, Phillips can play as both an edge setter and pocket disrupter. After being traded to the Eagles on Nov. 3, he had two sacks and 27 pressures in coordinator Vic Fangio’s system, flashing improved range to the ball. Over his five-year career, Phillips has accounted for 28 sacks and 150 pressures.

4. Alec Pierce, WR

2025 team:
Indianapolis Colts | Age entering 2026 season: 26

What he brings: A vertical stretch target at 6-foot-3 and 211 pounds, Pierce averaged a league-best 21.3 yards per catch in 2025. He also topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark and brought in six touchdowns. Pierce has the straight-line speed to lift the safeties, creating open coverage voids underneath for other targets. With more volume and an increased role, he has the skills to produce as a multilevel route runner.

Alec Pierce is a deep threat – no doubt, but he can do so much more.

This clip shows 2 things I think he could bring to Washington’s new-look offense.
-first is a crosser against zone. He’s a big-bodied target and easy to find
-second is a tough catch in the middle in traffic pic.twitter.com/HYiAXfyPsr

5. Rasheed Walker, OT

2025 team:
Green Bay Packers | Age entering 2026 season: 26

What he brings: Walker’s pass block win rate of 93.8% ranked 11th among 68 qualifying offensive tackles. His technique could still improve and he lacks a strong anchor, but he has the footwork and mobility to match the speed of edge rushers. At a premium position, Walker will see heavy interest in free agency.

6. Odafe Oweh, Edge

2025 team:
Los Angeles Chargers | Age entering 2026 season: 27

What he brings: An explosive pass rusher who gets off the ball in a hurry, Oweh can also flatten his path to maneuver around offensive tackles. After getting traded from the Ravens on Oct. 7, Oweh had 7.5 sacks and 27 pressures in Los Angeles. Plus, he recorded three sacks in the team’s wild-card loss to the Patriots.

Commanders Roundtable

Why Odafe Oweh Is the Perfect Piece for Commanders, Daronte Jones

Oweh’s measurables are exactly what you look for in an All-Pro defender. At 6-foot-5 with 34.5-inch arms, he has the length to disrupt passing lanes and win at the point of attack. His 4.37-second forty-yard dash, 39.5-inch vertical, and 11-foot-2-inch broad jump place him in rare athletic company for any position, let alone a 257-pound edge defender. Speed and explosion off the snap — the foundational traits of any elite pass rusher — aren’t things you develop. You either have them, or you don’t. Oweh has them in abundance.

Beyond the pass rush, Oweh has graded among the top edge defenders in run stop rate in back-to-back seasons, ranking third in both 2024 and 2025 at the position. That matters enormously for a Jones defense that will ask its edge players to set hard edges in the run game while also being capable of dropping into coverage on occasion. Oweh has logged more coverage snaps than the average edge defender throughout his career, demonstrating the positional flexibility Jones covets in a multiple-scheme.

When a defense has a legitimate edge threat winning individual matchups, it creates a domino effect: corners don’t have to hold coverage as long, linebackers can attack downhill, and safeties can cheat toward the line of scrimmage. Jones’ scheme is designed to generate takeaways and exploit those cascading advantages — but it only works if there’s a disruptive presence up front forcing the issue.

Paired with a returning Dorance Armstrong, Oweh doesn’t have to carry the load alone. He just has to be the headliner Jones’ system was designed around — a long, explosive, turnover-forcing edge defender who makes everyone else around him better.

On paper, the fit is seamless.

Nobody earned a $100M contract in a shorter amount of time than Commanders EDGE Odafe Oweh.

Averaged 0.36 sacks per game with the Ravens (mid), then went ballistic with the Chargers to the tune of 10.5 sacks in 13 games!!!

A potential star and a steal: Commanders use Day 1 of free agency to bolster defense

[Washington] zeroed in on the defense, adding versatile cornerback Amik Robertson on a two-year, $16 million deal and then pass rusher Odafe Oweh on a four-year, $100 million contract, according to sources.

In between, the team re-upped with veteran backup quarterback Marcus Mariota on a one-year, $7 million deal, then turned to defense again to bring back defensive tackle Tim Settle, Washington’s fifth-round pick in 2018.

The prize of the group, in monetary value and on-field potential, is undoubtedly Oweh, a 27-year-old edge rusher who has the size (6-foot-5, 251 pounds), length (34.5-inch arms, according to his pro day measurements) and speed (unofficial 4.36-second 40).

Oweh spent more than four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after they drafted him in the first round out of Penn State in 2021. He opened last season with a dry spell in sacks and was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers, a move that jump-started his season and raised his value. In 13 games with the Chargers (including one in the playoffs), Oweh notched 10.5 sacks, the last two of which were strip-sacks of Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in the Chargers’ wild-card playoff loss. Oweh had three total sacks in that game.

[T]he steal of Washington’s offseason so far may be Robertson, a smaller but versatile corner who can play in the slot and outside at corner. Robertson played primarily out wide last season for the Detroit Lions, but spent the majority of his 2024 defensive snaps inside.

Despite being only 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, Robertson plays fearlessly, and is scrappy in coverage. He led the Lions with 12 pass breakups last season and has played beyond his size throughout his career.

Take his interception in coverage against Ja’Marr Chase in Week 5 of last season. Or when he stayed glued to Justin Jefferson and nearly had a pick in the end zone in Week 16. Or this pick of Jordan Love in 2023 or this pick of Daniel Jones later that season.

“He’s a skilled player,” Lions coach Dan Campbell once said of Robertson. “He’s tenacious, he’s feisty, he’s confident and teammates love his energy because he does, he brings it all the time. He brings it in practice, brings it in the games, he’s a ball guy. And he is, he’s kind of one of those guys that sparks our defense, the other guys around him.”

Commanders, LT Laremy Tunsil agree to 2-year extension: Source

Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil agreed to a two-year extension with the team that will keep him under contract until 2028, according to two league sources.

The deal, according to one of those sources, is for $60.2 million in total value for the two years and includes $32.5 million in a signing bonus, the largest one ever given to an NFL offensive lineman.

Tunsil started 14 games last season, missing the final three because of shoulder and oblique injuries. He allowed only two sacks and 15 pressures, and was especially effective as a run blocker.

Off the field, Tunsil immediately took on the role of mentor to two of the team’s youngest linemen, rookie Josh Conerly Jr. and Brandon Coleman, inviting both to Auburn to train with him in the offseason.

Riggo’s Rag

Commanders throw down the gauntlet to Johnny Newton after Tim Settle deal

The Commanders were expecting big things from Johnny Newton when they took him at No. 36 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Most experts thought he was a first-round lock before injuries dented his stock. Washington thought it was getting a steal, but two years into his professional career, the jury is still well and truly out.

Newton has found it difficult to carve out a prominent role for himself. Aside from a three-sack outing against the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Day, his production has been relatively underwhelming. The Commanders are not ready to give up on him just yet, but the Illinois product’s chance of gaining additional reps hasn’t exactly increased after Settle’s arrival.

Assuming Settle assumes the nose tackle role in Daronte Jones’ projected 3-4 base front, Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw will line up as the ends. These are large, space-eating linemen who can free up space for the edge rushers to do damage, which now includes Oweh after he agreed to a four-year, $100 million deal with $68 million guaranteed.

Where that leaves Newton is anyone’s guess.

He’s young enough at 23 to keep improving, but his snap count diminishing to 38 percent last season was a significant step back. The acquisition of Settle means starting this year is out of the question, barring injury. Perhaps the Commanders see Newton as a pass-rush specialist and nothing more. While that’s useful, it’s not why he got drafted early on Day 2.

Commanders Wire

Commanders agree to terms with former Lions cornerback

Though Robertson played more outside than at slot in 2025, the Lions did have a ton of injuries last season. It could very well be that Lions coaches determined Robertson would fill a bigger need playing outside for them in 2025. Robertson is only 5-9, 183 pounds and may very well have been signed to play at slot corner, meaning the Commanders may be planning on moving Sainristil permanently to the outside.

Robertson spent his first four NFL seasons (2020-23) with the Raiders, after being drafted No. 139 overall in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He then played his last two seasons with the Lions (2024-25). Some Commanders fans may recall that in the 2024 season playoff game at Detroit, Robertson broke his arm early against Washington.

In his six NFL seasons Robertson has started 35 games, intercepting five passes, defending 35 passes, and forcing seven fumbles.

Amik Robertson: Decent slot cornerback. Addresses a big need. Robertson has a history of playing well against Justin Jefferson, too, for what that’s worth. This move should allow Mike Sainristil to play fully on the outside, where he’s had more success thus far in his career.…

Sources: Commanders re-signing backup QB Marcus Mariota

The Washington Commanders are re-signing backup quarterback Marcus Mariota on a one-year, $7 million deal, according to NFL Network.

Mariota can make up to $11 million in incentives, per the report.

Mariota, 32, started eight games last season for Washington and appeared in 11 as starter Jayden Daniels battled injuries. Mariota threw for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but the Commanders won only two of his starts.

He has started 82 games in his career, throwing for 17,879 yards, 107 touchdowns and 62 interceptions. He also has rushed for 2,453 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Jaelan Phillips is not returning to the Eagles

The Eagles weren’t able to keep one of the league’s top upcoming free agents in Philadelphia, and instead he’s heading to Carolina

The Eagles made a big deal ahead of the NFL trade deadline in 2025, bringing edge rusher Jaelan Phillips to Philadelphia from Miami. The former Dolphins pass rusher was instantly impactful upon reuniting with Vic Fangio and he even called the trade the best thing to ever happen to him. Despite the Eagles reportedly making a strong push to keep him in Philly, Phillips will instead head to the Carolina Panthers on a four-year contract worth $120 million, including $80 million guaranteed.

Jahan Dotson will not return to the Eagles

The Eagles WR3 will join another Philadelphia alumnus down in Atlanta this season

The Birds’ WR3 is reportedly heading to the Atlanta Falcons on a two-year deal worth $15 million and includes $10 million guaranteed, according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

During his two years in Philly, the former Penn State pass-catcher recorded 37 catches for 478 yards and one touchdown. While Dotson made some highlight catches at times (few and far between), he ranked 189th out of 200 wide receivers in yards per route run in 2025. His minimal role behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith was evident ever since the team traded for him in 2024.

Now Dotson will head to the Falcons, where he’ll have a chance to play a bigger role in the offense. Dotson will join another former Eagles receiver, Olamide Zaccheaus, who also reportedly plans to sign with Atlanta in free agency.

Nakobe Dean is not returning to the Eagles

The linebacker will be moving on after four seasons as a leader on the Eagles defense

Nakobe Dean, who reportedly agreed to a three-year, $36 million deal that includes $20 million guaranteed with the Las Vegas Raiders — leaving behind a plethora of Georgia teammates he’s played with since college.

Dean has struggled to stay healthy at times but he’s always locked in even if it’s from the sideline. Still, that history — including a Lisfranc injury, a torn patellar tendon, and a hamstring injury — impacted his free agency options.

Just talked with someone close to the situation and apparently Dallas was actually very competitive in the Nakobe Dean market.

He was one of their 5 zooms allowed. I’m told their offer was similar to the Raiders but ultimately he went with his gut feeling but was told he could…

Reed Blankenship is not returning to the Eagles

Philadelphia will need a new starting safety in 2026

The Birds are losing their starting safety and team captain to the Houston Texans, who are reportedly signing Blankenship to a three-year, $24.75 million contract. That $8.25 million annual value makes him the league’s 25th-highest paid player at his position on a yearly basis, just above Jeremy Chinn.

Blankenship’s departure raises questions about the Eagles’ safety position entering next season. The team is seemingly high on 2025 second-round pick Andrew Mukuba … but he’s coming off a serious injury. Vic Fangio clearly hasn’t trusted the erratic Sydney Brown to play meaningful snaps to this point. Marcus Epps is a free agent and maybe Blankenship’s exit makes his return to Philly more likely.

Blankenship is the fourth Eagles free agent to reportedly sign elsewhere since the league’s negotiating window opened at noon on Monday.

Cowboys and Terence Steele negotiate new contract, create $13M in cap space

The Dallas Cowboys…have negotiated a new deal for starting right tackle Terence Steele. He will receive $22 million in guaranteed money on his new deal with a $33 million base value, which can go up to $36 million. This also creates $13 million in cap space for the Cowboys.

Steele was set to earn $48.5M over the next three years from the Cowboys, so it sounds like he took a pay cut to $33M and in return gets $22M guaranteed. He had no real guarantees on this year's salary prior to this.

NY Giants news: Recently-released veteran linebacker signs with New York

The New York Giants have filled their need for a veteran off-ball linebacker by signing Tremaine Edmunds, recently released by the Chicago Bears, to a three-year, $36-million contact.

The Giants recently released inside linebacker Bobby Okereke, who was in the final year of a four-year, $40 million contract. Off-ball linebacker Micah McFadden is also a free agent.

What it means for the Giants

Edmunds to the Giants has been speculated about for several weeks, even before the Bears released Edmunds to save $15 million against the salary cap. There was a time when some thought the Giants might need to engineer a player-for-player swap, sending Kayvon Thibodeaux to the Bears, for Edmunds.

In the end, all the Giants needed was cash.

NY Giants news: Cor’Dale Flott to the Titans; What it means for the Giants

Flott has become the third member of the Giants’ 2022 draft class to follow Brian Daboll to the Titans, joining Wan’Dale Robinson and Daniel Bellinger.

The Giants were reportedly all set to re-sign Flott, however the Titans made a last-minute push to woo the 24-year old corner. Conor Hughes of SNY reports that the Titans laid out their entire defensive plan, including how he would be used.

The loss of Flott creates a significant question mark for the Giants across from Paulson Adebo. It was believed that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean could be an option if the Giants lost Flott, however he agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Final thought: noteworthy that New Orleans (8th overall) and Kansas City (9th overall) invested big money in RBs (Kenneth Walker, Travis Etienne).

To me, that means both teams believe Jeremiyah Love will likely be gone by then. Washington picks 7th, and Love makes a lot of sense…

The Dolphins are taking on an NFL record $99 million to release Tua Tagovailoa. He will play for the minimum this season ($1.3M).

Another reminder not to give the bag to the wrong QB.

— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) March 9, 2026
Presuming Tua Tagovailoa plays for the minimum this year, the Dolphins will wind up paying nearly $147 million for two years on his 2024 contract. They had him, at the time, on a $23.4 million option for '24, so Miami paid over $123 million for one additional year of Tua.

Washington Commanders 2026 Free Agency Rumors Tracker: Adding more defensive players on Day 2

FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS - JANUARY 11: K'Lavon Chaisson #44 of the New England Patriots runs downfield during the fourth quarter of an AFC wild card playoff football game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium on January 11, 2026 in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The NFL’s legal tampering period started yesterday at noon, and there was plenty of action. That action didn’t get to the Washington Commanders until reports came out that they had agreed to a 2-year extension with LT Laremy Tunsil. The first free agent “signing” from another team was a letdown if you were expecting the promised fireworks from Washington when free agency started. Lions CB Amik Robertson agreed to a 2-year deal, but only provided sparklers for a fanbase looking for top talent to revive a team that went 5-12 last season.

The fourth hour of legal tampering only gave the fanbase another re-signing, but it was an important one. Backup QB Marcus Mariota is returning for another year, and the crowd went mild. If you were one of the many fans asking for proof that Adam Peters was alive, had access to Josh Harris’s password for the salary cap funds, and was willing/allowed to spend it; the good news came with the announcement that Chargers DE Odafe Oweh had agreed to terms on a 4-year, $100 million deal. Adam Peters lives! The first day of legal tampering ended with a homecoming. Former Redskins 5th-round pick Tim Settle Jr. agreed to return to Washington on a three-year deal.

The new league year starts tomorrow at 4pm. Contracts reported for free agents with expiring contracts during the two day legal tampering window won’t be official until the new league year starts. Washington was still signing a few of their pending free agents before they hit the market, and none of their FAs agreed to deals with other teams.

Commanders 61-man offseason depth chart – updated after the second day of the 2026 “legal tampering period”

gettyimages-1363673542.jpg

EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY - JANUARY 09: Tim Settle #97 of the Washington Football Team celebrates after recovering a fumble with teammate Jeremy Reaves #39 in the fourth quarter of the game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on January 09, 2022 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. There have been several changes to the Commanders roster since we published the last depth chart update on Sunday. Here’s a quick summary of the reported transactions in the past 24 hours or so:

Re-signed/extended

Free agents signed from other teams

The updated depth chart

  • Players under contract are shown in BOLD
  • Newly signed free agents are shown in bold with a pink background
  • Pending free agents are shown in italics with a grey background
  • Zach Ertz & Austin Ekeler have black backgrounds to indicate severe injury last season
  • Tyree Jackson & Chris Rodriguez have yellow backgrounds to indicate that they are Restricted Free Agents — RFAs have to be tendered by 4 p.m. ET today (March 11th) or they become unrestricted free agents
depth-chart-11-mar-2026.jpg

The numbers that appear beside some players’ names are 2025 cap hits per Over the Cap. I have not included cap hits below $1.5m. Newly signed free agents and newly extended players do not have cap hits listed since most have not yet been publicly reported; these will be updated as we move forward through the offseason.

The Commanders currently have 33 defensive players, 25 offensive players and 3 special teams players.

Please note that assigned positions and color coding are my own personal opinions. They do not necessarily represent the thinking of Washington’s coaches or front office, nor are they necessarily consistent with fan consensus. This chart represents my personal interpretation, and may not reflect the thoughts of other writers on Hogs Haven. Finally, when it comes to backup players, I don’t put much effort into making sure that they are on the right or left or behind the specific player that they backup. I mostly just try to fit everyone on the chart efficiently.

It’s also probably worth noting that I have retained the 4-3 “look” on the defensive side of the chart, primarily to avoid a lot of angst in trying to assign players to positions in a 3-4 alignment. After free agency, there should be more clarity and I may update the layout of the chart
. For the moment, the defensive layout is a bit schizophrenic.

Free agency is not over by any means. The Commanders still need to add another 30 players to the offseason roster, and they currently hold only 6 picks in April’s draft.

temp-2026-draft-picks.jpg

That means that Adam Peters is still looking to add another 2 dozen veteran and college free agents over the coming weeks.

With 61 players, the Commanders haven’t yet reached the number of players that will comprise the 53-man roster and 16-man practice squad in 2025. There are still plenty of thin spots on the roster to patch up ahead of the draft.

The team needs to add more ‘impact’ players in free agency — with many fans focused on TE, WR, RB, another CB and more defensive depth — but within a day or two, free agency will move into the 2nd wave, in which most of the top-tier veterans will have found a home. The Maxx Crosby situation may add a bit of turmoil today and the rest of the week as teams try to figure out how the free agency dynamic is changed by the many ripple effects of the Ravens reversal.

— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) March 11, 2026

The new NFL league year officially started and we’re seeing signings and trades finalized that were agreed to during offseason and the 2+ day legal tampering window that just ended. Today’s 4 p.m. ET start to the league year was also the deadline for teams to tender their restricted free agents. Running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. was an RFA this year, and did not receive a tender, or a new contract before officially becoming a free agent. The lowest tender amount for a restricted free agent this season is $3.52 million for the right of first refusal tender.

Rodriguez started his NFL career as an undrafted free agent from Kentucky that drafted by the Commanders in the sixth round of the 2023 draft. He has bounced between the practice squad and the 53-man roster over the last three seasons, but had his biggest season last year after Austin Ekeler was injured and Brian Robinson Jr. was traded to the 49ers. Rodriguez had 112 rushes for 500 yards and 6 TDs. He was in a RB room that also included 7th-round rookie Bill Croskey-Merritt and veteran Jeremy McNichols.

Rodriguez, Ekeler, and McNichols are all free agents now, leaving Bill as the last man standing at running back. Washington has leaned heavy on the defensive side of the ball in their free agent signings, and they will have to make a move at RB and WR soon. If they strike out in free agency, or still need more, the draft is next month and the Commanders currently have six picks.

The Commanders did not tender RB Chris Rodriguez, per source. He is a free agent.

The updated depth chart

I have taken the approach on defense of listing 5 defensive line positions, 5 linebacker spots, and 5 defensive back positions to allow you to configure 3-man, 4-man and 5-man fronts in your own mind. There’s some guesswork involved here, and some players (think Daron Payne) will line up in multiple positions, so I have just tried to make the defensive side of the ball make as much sense as I can while the team is in transition to an unclear scheme under Daronte Jones.

Washington Commanders Rumors Tracker: Second Wave of Free Agency

Free agency has been going on since the NFL’s legal tampering period started on Monday at noon. We’re now in the second wave of free agency, with a lot of the big contracts already given out this week. The Washington Commanders signed eight players from other teams through yesterday, and have now added one more today. The defense has been getting the majority of the attention in free agency, but Jayden Daniels got a familiar RB today with the signing of former Buccaneer and Sun Devil Rachaad White.

The new league year started yesterday at 4 p.m. ET. The Commanders still have the most available cap space in the NFL($66.3 million), but that number is going down as they continue to add players, and contracts are finalized and entered into the system. They will need to continue signing players at various salary/skill levels, along with their six draft picks for April’s draft. How many players does Washington need to sign today to make the second wave of free agency a success?

I would like to add on that they’re not planning to release him anytime soon. They essentially have no guaranteed money left on his contract, so they can hold onto him for the time being.
