A big tweak could be coming to the Bengals offense

Cincinnati Bengals v Dallas Cowboys

Since Joe Burrow joined the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2020, the team’s offense has ascended to being one of the most lethal in the NFL. That’s not to say that criticisms haven’t come to the group over the years, though, with the offensive line being the center of those gripes.

The embattled unit performed well last year, but another recent facet of the offense has come into focus: their inability to get big plays on early downs.

That issue hasn’t gone unnoticed by offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher, as evidenced by his recent comments at the 2026 NFL Combine.

Bengals OC Dan Pitcher says a major focus this offseason is creating more explosive plays on 1st & 2nd down.

Another interesting note: “Spending more time under center is something we have to think about… Joe wants to win. He is not going to tell you he can’t do anything.”

— Charlie Clifford (@char_cliff) February 25, 2026

Joe Burrow’s preference has largely been to operate out of spread and/or shotgun looks, assisting in his ability to process the defense’s pre-snap look. And, while it has been a historical offense in many senses, there have also been instances wherein the plays become a bit predictable.

The latter issue points to Pitcher’s quote on “more time under center”. The improved offensive line play last year hoping to carry over in 2026 (a Dalton Risner re-signing would be key) should help in this quest to put themselves into better late-down situations. Chase Brown’s continued development into one of the better backs in the NFL, as well as the possibility of adding even more offensive weapons this spring, could allow the offense to operate more under center and bring more explosiveness on early downs.

Another element of this approach might be the idea to limit the amount of defensive contact Burrow has received so far in his career. When he’s healthy, Burrow is arguably the top quarterback in the league. However, three major injuries over his six accrued seasons are becoming an unfortunate trend, and they need him to be healthy to fulfill their championship aspirations.

Cincinnati also faces some formidable defenses in 2026. Aside from the physicality of six games within the AFC North, the Bengals also square off against the Houston Texans, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Lou Anarumo’s Indianapolis Colts, so further embracing further offensive variation will be key to a playoff run.

Do you think the Bengals should operate more under center this year? What other positions should the star-studded offense look at this offseason to be as versatile as possible?

Bengals met with Jalon Kilgore at NFL Combine

As most of us are aware, the Cincinnnati Bengals were one of the worst defenses the last couple of years, especially giving up explosive plays over the top.

Jalon Kilgore was one of the handful of defensive backs the Bengals met with at the recent NFL Combine, according to Malik Wright.

In need of a safety, Kilgore could be a good Day 2-3 option, as Cincinnati has been linked to a few other players and positions in the first couple of rounds, such as Caleb Downs at safety and Rueben Bain Jr. at defensive end. The Gamecock DB is projected to go in Round 3 by the NFL Mock Draft Database.

Kilgore is a former 4-star recruit who played nearly every week in college, missing only three games entering last season. He was a critical run stopper for the Gamecocks, which would be exactly what the Bengals are looking for as they were in the bottom 10 of teams last season in stopping the run.

He would fit right in the mold the Bengals are looking for, according to the characteristics of Duke Tobin’s preferred player, being versatile and playing both nickel and safety.

Kilgore will be one to watch for in Cincinnati when the draft rolls around.

Bengals called Raiders about Maxx Crosby trade before Ravens got him

When the Las Vegas Raiders started entertaining the idea of trading superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby, Cincinnati Bengals fans were all over the idea. Knowing Trey Hendrickson would be leaving in free agency, fans viewed Crosby as not only a great replacement but an upgrade.

A blockbuster trade of that magnitude isn’t necessarily what the Bengals are known for, but after two years of bottom-of-the-league defense and Ja’Marr Chase publicly stating his desire for the team to go get Crosby, some thought they could shock the fan base and pull it off.

While he ultimately wound up with the Baltimore Ravens for a pair of first round picks, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that the Bengals did, in fact, call the Raiders about a potential Crosby trade.

“The Bengals, on the verge of losing Trey Hendrickson in free agency, were another latecomer to the party. By then, over a quarter of the league’s 32 teams had shown some level of interest in Crosby, with a few others that he had less interest in going to throwing their hats in the ring as well,” wrote Breer.

Breer also said that the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, and obviously the Ravens were the most aggressive, but the Bengals did at least check in with Las Vegas about a deal.

With multiple teams showing interest, Raiders General Manager John Spytek was able to raise the price in a simple case of supply and demand. In the end, he walked away with two first round picks and a trade that shook the entire NFL.

If the Bengals had been willing to offer the 10th overall pick plus next year’s first-rounder, it would have beaten Baltimore’s offer based on them holding pick 14 in this year’s draft. Realistically speaking, the Bengals were never going to give up multiple first round picks. It simply isn’t what they do, and while they have changed some in how they operate over the years, that deal was likely too rich for their blood.

The Bengals are reportedly still going to get aggressive to improve their defense, though. They are expected to be active in free agency, which technically begins Monday at 4 PM ET. The NFL calls it the “legal tampering period,” so we will see contracts announced that will be finalized on Monday.

2026 Cincinnati Bengals Free Agency Primer

imagn-24055199.jpg

Bengals Mascot dances before the NFL preseason game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Indianapolis Colts at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024.

We are about to enter one of the most exciting periods of the offseason: NFL free agency. This is a period that players with expiring contracts can hit what is commonly explained as the “open market.” It is easily the most movement you will see among teams, and watching the dust settle is always something.

The Cincinnati Bengals have commonly not been big players in this phase for one reason or another. A big reason in the past few offseasons has been the explosion of guaranteed money included in players’ contracts (especially with the top free agents), which fans know they are already reluctant to give to their own players.

Still, the team has plenty of money to throw around, and they have a ton of needs because of some bad draft classes and not planning.

Here is our 2026 Cincinnati Bengals Free Agency Primer:

How Free Agency Works

The Legal Tampering Period begins at noon on March 9th (Monday).

I love getting to explain the Legal Tampering Period. Long story short, NFL teams weren’t supposed to talk to potential free agents on other teams until the new league year started. It was so obvious that teams were tampering because as soon as the clock struck 4 PM with full detailed contracts. Because this would routinely happen and the NFL could not stop it, they created a 48-hour period prior to actual free agency starting, so that teams could do all their tampering during that time.

The New League Year (and free agency) begins Wednesday, March 11th at 4 PM.

This is the period where teams can officially start signing players from other teams. This essentially runs until the end of the 2027 season’s Super Bowl, but the big news usually flies on the first few days, with a second wave that comes some time after the NFL Draft.

Bengals Cap Space

Cincinnati has roughly $47 million, according to Over The Cap (which many of these cap references will be coming from). There are ways to make quite a bit more, though.

Potential Cap Casualties

The most likely cap casualty would be defensive tackle TJ Slayton. Slayton was signed last Offseason, and cutting him would create roughly $6.4 million in cap space while only adding $2.5 million in dead money. That dead money is something the Bengals hate to have.

That is the big reason you likely won’t see left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. actually get cut despite it creating close to $14 million in cap space. He would also create almost $8 million in dead money. Not to mention, this team has never had an offensive line as good as they had last year, and cutting Brown just to replace him would cost them much more.

If the Bengals wanted to easily create more space, they could restructure the contracts for Tee Higgins, Ja’Marr Chase, and Joe Burrow. Simply converting salary to signing bonus (which is something many other teams do) does wonders for cap space. This is something out of the Bengals’ comfort zone, and they didn’t do it when they could have last season. So we won’t be taking that into account.

Biggest needs

The Bengals have serious defensive needs, but they are not completely covered on the offensive side of the ball either. Any successful team is thinking a couple of years ahead of time right now. Some of these are more likely to be filled via the draft with younger players, but I will still list them here.

  • Edge rusher(s)
  • Interior rusher(s)
  • Linebacker (preferably a veteran starter)
  • Safety(s)
  • Tight end
  • Wide receiver 3
  • Right guard (Dalton Risner isn’t getting any younger)
  • Left tackle (Brown isn’t getting any younger)
  • Backup quarterback
  • Backup running back

Pending free agents

  • DE Trey Hendrickson
  • DE Joseph Ossai
  • S Geno Stone
  • QB Joe Flacco
  • TE Noah Fant
  • OG Cordell Volson
  • OL Lucas Patrick
  • DB Marco Wilson
  • CB Cam Taylor-Britt
  • DE Cameron Sample
  • LB Brian Asamoah
  • S Tycen Anderson
  • QB Jake Browning (Restricted free agent)

DJ Reader open to rejoining Bengals in free agency: “It was a pretty special place to be”

DJ Reader is one of the best free agent signings in Cincinnati Bengals history. He brought leadership on and off the field in his four seasons in Cincinnati, a crucial time for the franchise, becoming a cornerstone of a defense that played a key role in the Bengals’ run to Super Bowl LVI.

Could Reader return to the Bengals in this year’s free agency frenzy?

Reader weighed in on that scenario on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, and it sounds like he’s certainly open to a Queen City reunion.

Free agent DT D.J. Reader on a potential return to the Cincinnati Bengals:

"I've always thought it was a pretty special place to be… If the opportunity comes up, I'd have to weigh my options." @Djread98 | @heykayadams pic.twitter.com/txBrwksabM

— Up & Adams (@UpAndAdamsShow) March 9, 2026

First of all, it is refreshing to hear Reader say that Cincinnati “was a pretty special place to be.” He was the Bengals’ first free agent signing in 2020, more than a month before Burrow was drafted.

The Bengals’ run defense became instantly better with Reader on the field. In 2021, Reader finished with 43 tackles. Over his next two seasons, Reader had an 88.0 Pro Football Focus grade, seventh-best among defensive tackles.

Cincinnati needs to get its defensive line, particularly its rush defense, back up to where it can competently stop the run. It could be the first step towards fixing their defense that needs a major rebuild.

Reader became a fan favorite in Cincinnati during his four seasons here. He could be a welcome addition back to the team.

The Cincinnati Bengals got off to a good start to begin the 2026 free agency tampering period. Agreeing to deals with safety Bryan Cook and defensive end Boye Mafe. Both players are coming off of rookie contracts and should be in the prime of their careers. They are also both guys who were part of Super Bowl-winning teams. Let’s take a look at some other players still on the market that the Bengals could have interest in.

Quarterback

Joe Flacco remains at the top of this list for me. If the Bengals were able to bring Flacco back, they would have a veteran leader who has shown that he can come in and be competitive when called on. Some other players expected to be on the market by Wednesday include Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, Geno Smith, Russell Wilson, Tyrod Taylor, and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Wide Receiver

While it isn’t expected for the Bengals to add a wide receiver during free agency, they could look to upgrade in the slot. A couple of players that could make sense here are Christian Kirk and Darnell Mooney. Both players would give you a quicker separator than what you have with Andrei Iosivas.

Defensive End

The Bengals agreed to a deal with Boye Mafe. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t continue looking to add another player at that position during free agency. One of the most intriguing players still on the market is Arnold Ebikitie. His role decreased with the Falcons due to the young rookies Atlanta had on the team last year. He recently turned 27 years old and is projected to get a 2-year $16 million contract in free agency.

Some other players still available here include Joey Bosa, Jadeveon Clowney, Bradley Chubb, Cameron Jordan, K’Lavon Chaisson, and even old friend Trey Hendrickson.

Defensive Tackle

Cincinnati missed out in its pursuit of John Franklin-Myers. Myers was far and away the best available player at this position. There are two guys who should still interest the Bengals. These two guys are on completely opposite ends of the age spectrum for NFL players. Logan Hall is a 26-year-old player who could add some versatility and juice to the defensive line. Calais Campbell is another guy that they should gauge interest in. Campbell will be turning 40 years old, but there has not been a decline in his impact on the defensive line.

Another name to at least toss out there is DJ Reader. He isn’t going to help the pass rush much, but he is a veteran leader who is still stout against the run. Would he accept a potential rotational role and contract?

Linebacker

The Bengals missed out on Devin Lloyd, the projected top of the market linebacker, who signed with the Panthers on Monday night. He signed for an average annual value of $15 million per year. The next guy that many Bengals fans are hoping ends up in Cincinnati is Leo Chenal. Chenal hasn’t been a full-time starter during his time with the Chiefs. He still has been an impactful player, and is just now getting ready to turn 26 years old. This is a player who would immediately come in and elevate the outlook of the linebacker position.

Another player at linebacker to note is Kaden Elliss. The 31-year-old linebacker was most recently with the Falcons. He was originally with the New Orleans Saints. He would also be an upgrade over Barrett Carter at the linebacker position. Bobby Wagner is another veteran still on the market, but he has not been good in coverage the last couple of seasons in Washington.

Cornerback

Another position that is more likely to see an addition in the draft than free agency at the moment is corner. If they did look toward the free agent market for an addition, there are several notable names left out there. Tariq Woolen, Cobie Durant, Roger McCreary, Chidobe Awuzie, and Martin Emerson are some of the players still available to start day two of the tampering period.

Safety

The Bengals could still look to add one more safety. The most likely player would be them re-signing Tycen Anderson. Anderson has been a special teams standout in Cincinnati. If they are thinking of getting a bit more creative with using three safeties, they could gauge the interest of a player like Nick Cross still. Other notable safeties still available include Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker.

Who are some players from this list you are hoping the Bengals can still add to the roster? Sound off in the comments.

What is your grade for the initial wave of Bengals free agency?

Greetings, Bengals fans!

What an opening day of NFL free agency it was for Cincinnati after signing standout safety Bryan Cook away from the Kansas City Chiefs, then following it up with the addition of Seattle Seahawks defensive end Boye Mafe.

The Bengals consistently said they wanted to attack the defense this offseason, and boy did they ever, signing those two alone to deals worth over $100 million over the next three seasons.

Of course, the team did miss out on linebacker Devin Lloyd, who ended up signing with the Carolina Panthers, so that’s still a position of need.

All told, how would you grade the Bengals’ opening wave of free agency? Sound off in the poll below, and expand on your grade in the comments!

NFL Free Agency Day 1: Open Thread and Bengals news

Well things start to become official at 4 PM today. But I imagine there will be plenty of discussion before then.

Last night the Baltimore Ravens backed out of their trade with the Las Vegas Raiders to send two first round picks for EDGE Maxx Crosby. A move many members of NFL front offices are not pleased about.

Now not even 24 hours later they have a deal in place with former Cincinnati Bengal Trey Hendrickson. It doesn’t take a full blown investigation to figure out what happened there.

But feel free to discuss that and everything else going on today!

How Bengals signing Bryan Cook overhauls NFL draft plan

If Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is still available when the Bengals select at No. 10, the team could still consider him because of how versatile he is, perhaps play him at nickel corner. However, the Bengals have praised the improvement of fellow safety Jordan Battle, who had 125 combined tackles in 2025. Duke Tobin raved about Battle at the Scouting Combine.

Ravens Back Out of Maxx Crosby Trade, Why Bengals Could Strike Deal With Raiders

Another thing is certain: Yesterday’s price isn’t today’s price. The Raiders aren’t going to get two first round picks for Crosby. The market has shifted. Plenty of veteran free agents have agreed to deals elsewhere. So what will he cost? Should the Bengals be interested?

Trey Hendrickson Officially Leaves Cincinnati, Here’s What it Means for Bengals

Cincinnati had the chance to sign Hendrickson to a long-term extension in each of the prior two offseasons, but that never came to fruition, and they chose not to franchise tag him in search of a trade by last week’s deadline.

Bengals won’t have slightest interest in Maxx Crosby trade now

The Bengals would especially not have an interest now. It was well known that Crosby had surgery and was in the middle of a recovery. But the fact Ravens doctors, and apparently Cowboys doctors, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, didn’t like what they saw is a big deal.

Best remaining free agent linebackers Bengals can sign after letting Kaden Elliss and Leo Chenal slip through their fingers

Dre Greenlaw and Bobby Okereke aren’t yet available yet, but they are set to be released Wednesday afternoon at the official start of free agency. Greenlaw was a standout starter for the San Francisco 49ers for several years before a torn Achilles in Super Bowl LVIII. He also suffered a quad injury last year that took him out for the first half of his lone season with the Denver Broncos. If the Bengals are comfortable with his medical, a one-year deal makes sense.

Bengals Podcast: Free Agency Fizzle

It was a slow start to free agency for the Cincinnati Bengals, but noon turned into afternoon, and the Bengals made their moves. Seriously, they made both of their moves, and it’s been radio silence for two days. I mean, what is that about?

But I digress.

The team made two pick signings.

They signed Bryan Cook, who was widely seen as the top safety in free agency. Finally, they did something to solidify that position in a meaningful way. The former Cincinnati Bearcat comes home. Tears in his eyes, I suppose. This was a great move for the Bengals, but it was not enough.

Should we do one more? Let’s do one more. Okay, one more it is.

People have asked, “Who is this year’s Trey Hendrikson?” Well, it might just be Boye Mafe. They gave the young edge rusher a huge contract, betting more on his future than his past. Like Hendrickson, he might be right on the fringe of his breakout

The excitement from these moves slowly decreased, then turned largely into rage as we got into Wednesday night, and there was still no third move.

It’s coming. I’m telling you, it’s coming. They have the money.

The Bengals were also involved in the John Franklin-Myers sweepstakes, but despite an initial report from a phony Twitter account, Ed McMahon did not come knocking on their door.

Logan Hall was the other name to consider in this unimpressive lineup of interior rushers, but he went to Houston on the cheap, so it appears the Bengals were not in on that deal. Which is weird, because it would have made a lot of sense. I am not totally confident in Hall, but he has the versatility to play the run on the edge, which would at least give them some value if he didn’t pan out as an interior rusher.

Speaking of making sense, let’s talk Leo Chenel. He would have made a lot of sense for this defense. He is a linebacker who has some crazy athletic traits, is young, and has that oh so important ability to line up on the edge. He would have been an excellent complement to Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight, but alas, it was not meant to be. He wound up in Washington on a very reasonable deal.

There was a lot of talk from the fan base about Devin Lloyd, but apparently, they were never involved, even though everybody and their brother has been reporting that they have been interested in him. Perhaps it is Ezekiel Elliott all over again.

The Cincinnati Bengals remained quiet on the outside free-agent front on Tuesday and Wednesday, but they started off Thursday with a bang. The club announced a two-year contract extension with star tackle Orlando Brown Jr., keeping him in Cincinnati through the 2028 season.

Brown unexpectedly joined the Bengals in free agency back in 2023 and has since become one of the team’s valued leaders. He has started 45 games at left tackle for Cincinnati over the past three seasons.

When he met with the press on Thursday morning, Brown told reporters that he negotiated the extension himself, with Steven Radicevic serving as the primary point person in the talks. Along with a few other players with contracts set to expire after this year, Brown was one of the Bengals’ top re-signing priorities.

“I just wanted to win,” Brown said Thursday morning. “It’s one less thing on my plate and one less thing on their plate.”

Brown is entering his ninth NFL season and has provided overall steadiness along the offensive line. The Bengals also re-signed veteran guard Dalton Risner to a one-year deal prior to the start of free agency, helping to shore up the front that played well down the stretch last season.

While the finer details are unclear right now, the move should also provide salary cap relief this year. Brown’s cap hit before this extension was set to be just under $22 million.

We’ll have more details on this as it develops.

Possible Bengals draft target Caleb Banks broke foot at NFL Combine

NFL free agency has officially opened, and the Cincinnati Bengals have signed edge rusher Boye Mafe, safety Bryan Cook, and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. There is still so much work to be done, but they’re slowly (very slowly) building a pre-draft roster.

They have the No. 10 overall selection in April’s upcoming draft, and they’re expected to go defense. One defender the Bengals met with at the Combine was reportedly injured at the event and had to have surgery.

Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks, PFF’s top defensive tackle on their big board, broke his foot at the Combine, according to Dane Brugler, and he had surgery to repair his fourth metatarsal on Monday.

Banks had a lackluster 2025 season due to injuries, but he was dominant at the Senior Bowl. There haven’t been a ton of mock drafts selecting Banks for the Bengals at No. 10, but with this injury news, it’s possible he could fall out of the first round. If that happens, the Bengals’ landing a defensive tackle of Banks’ dimensions and potential in the second round would be huge.

Stay tuned as this story develops into draft season.

On Monday, the Cincinnati Bengals struck free agency with a bit of force, agreeing to contracts with both safety Bryan Cook and versatile defensive lineman Boye Mafe on the first day of the legal tampering period. It was met with positive reviews, but the following two days were not only silent in terms of Cincinnati signing outside free agents, but also hugely overshadowed by the Trey Hendrickson/Ravens saga.

The team went back to work on Thursday and had another solid day. One announced transaction was the re-signing of a valuable in-house player in Orlando Brown Jr., while the team made a bit of a splash with an outside acquisition in decorated veteran Jonathan Allen.

There are players the Bengals allowed to sign elsewhere in free agency who seemed like good scheme fits, but in truth, they have historically done the bulk of their outside free agency work in waves two and three. Allen fits that mold, and Cincinnati is continuing its work for the days ahead.

As we look at Thursday’s announced transactions, there are some players—currently rostered with Cincinnati or not—who will be affected. Let’s have a look at the winners and losers of these two particular transactions.

Winners

Dylan Fairchild

The second-year guard played well for the Bengals last year and is on his way to becoming a solid starting guard. Knowing that a well-decorated veteran is under contract for the next couple of years, on whom he can continue to lean, has to be a relief.

Plus, as we know at all levels of football, continuity is key. Brown is an immense presence on and off the football field, so having a semblance of stability with him seemingly locked up toward the end of his career benefits many—Fairchild being one of the main benefactors.

Joe Burrow

While Brown hasn’t been the same player he was in Baltimore and Kansas City since arriving in Cincinnati, he’s provided a lot of stability on the offensive line. Prior to his 2023 free agency signing, Burrow suffered under a revolving door of offensive linemen—largely subpar ones.

He has to be relieved that the team has locked up Brown through 2027, bringing that massive physical presence on the line for the next couple of years. Brown is his blindside guy, and with the sway Burrow seemingly has with the front office, one has to feel that he gave some semblance of a “stamp of approval” on this move.

Chase Brown

The fourth-year running back enjoyed his most successful pro season in 2025, logging career highs in rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions, and yards-per-carry average. As the line gelled with Brown toward the back end of the season, we saw an uptick in Brown’s statistical performance.

Two of his 100-yard rushing games came between Weeks 11–17, as did four of his six rushing touchdowns. He was also a big weapon in the passing game in that stretch, logging four of his five receiving touchdowns. While that’s a group effort up front, Brown was a staple in these dynamic performances.

B.J. Hill

One may only need to look at Hill’s X account for his glee about the Allen signing. While the veteran defensive tackle has had some huge plays for the Bengals since his arrival back in 2021, it’s no secret that he thrives on rotations and/or lining up in certain situations with a player having a similar skill set (see Larry Ogunjobi in 2021).

It remains to be seen just how much juice is left in Allen’s tank, but a large nose tackle (TJ Slaton and McKinnley Jackson) paired with a duo of interior players who possess pass-rush ability sounds oddly familiar to the 2021–2022 paths to Bengals success.

Boye Mafe

Of course he’s a winner for the lucrative contract, but also for the reasons mentioned above with Hill. Allen commanded a lot of double-teams last year, and whether or not that’s the case again in 2026, Mafe should have available rushing lanes. He’s also returning to a more high-profile role with the Bengals than he had in 2025 with the Seahawks.

Jordan Battle

One may see the signing of a safety and wonder why another is on the “winners” list. Well, Battle is a guy the Bengals’ staff really likes, and Cook is a steady veteran set to flank him.

Battle has been taking incremental pro steps toward the end of the past couple of years, and Cook is a great mentor. Battle was the team leader in interceptions (four) and tackles (128), but also missed 21 attempts. A sure tackler like Cook, who also brings high football IQ, should continue to raise Battle’s level of play.

Shemar Stewart

Stewart is perhaps the Bengals’ biggest wild card this year. If he takes steps toward ascension with a full offseason program, this whole defensive unit will improve dramatically.

Again, Allen’s addition to a rotation up front helps Stewart. His explosiveness, strength, and size will allow Golden to vary his pass-rush looks, which could free him up to make more plays in his second season.

TJ Slaton

The big boy in the middle of the defense began to get his footing late last year, along with the rest of the defense. As with Hill, having a rotational interior line presence in Allen should allow him to show more of his run-stopping abilities. And while he was mentioned as a cap casualty candidate by media outlets, it looks like Slaton will remain in Cincinnati under his current contract since the Bengals haven’t pursued a nose-tackle type lineman.

Al Golden

Yes, Leo Chenal, Bradley Chubb, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Dre Greenlaw, and many others have come off the free agency board, but the second-year defensive coordinator has seen the team spend a good amount of resources on his side of the ball. Mafe and Cook were early predictions and seem to fit very nicely after Golden basically pleaded for the team to add veteran talent on defense.

Not only did they add talent (you can discredit imperfect players if that’s your thing), but they also added veteran leadership. Mafe brings a Super Bowl ring with him, while Cook has two of his own, and Allen has a solid résumé on and off the field. If the Bengals are going to continue to rely on a lot of young players, the additions of Cook, Mafe, and Allen are a great infusion of leadership.

Jerry Montgomery

It will be interesting to see just how Golden and the Bengals use Mafe, but Montgomery has to be pleased with this offseason’s additions. After netting a familiar face in Slaton from the Packers last year (Montgomery was their previous defensive line coach), Montgomery gets Mafe and Allen to bolster his positional unit.

Scott Peters

When your franchise’s left tackle signs an extension to protect one of the game’s best quarterbacks, you’re stoked. The Brown extension, stacked on the Dalton Risner one-year deal, gives Peters a veteran group with good potential. It also opens up a myriad of possibilities for the Bengals in both the first and second rounds.

Duke Tobin

Many (myself included) were about ready to bring the pitchforks and torches to the doors of Paycor Stadium after Wednesday night. But they like to move at their own pace, and the team made some solid announcements on Thursday.

We have yet to see the absolute full scope of how Brown’s extension impacts this year’s cap, but it did provide team flexibility to sign some impact guys. More is to come, but after a solid first day of free agency, Tobin and the Bengals had a pretty solid end to the week to kick off wave two.

Losers

McKinnley Jackson and Kris Jenkins Jr.

It’s a numbers game, and Allen complicates things for these two. It’s very possible that they are both in the team’s long-term plans, but the Bengals clearly want more up front.

Jackson has flashed toward the end of the past two seasons, but it has not been consistent. Jenkins is solid against the run, but given his size, the team undoubtedly wants to see some pass rush develop. Their roster spots appear to be safe, given their recent draft statuses (Jenkins a second-round pick, Jackson a third-rounder), but the pressure is on both of them to show more.

Cedric Johnson

Johnson is a really good NFL story, given his draft position and ability to make an impact when called upon, but the Bengals just keep adding guys in front of him. It’s possible that the recent departures of Trey Hendrickson, Joseph Ossai, and Cam Sample allow him to have a depth rusher position, but Mafe complicates things.
