Weightlifting: better to bulk or tone?

This is going to change for each sport, but... as far as weightlifting goes, do you think it's better to workout to build muscle, or just tone? Or maybe a mixture or both? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two techniques?
 
Weight lifting for me is to builds muscle and increases strength, which boosts metabolism for weight loss,and enhances bone density .
 
It's better for increasing muscle mass, although it also helps with toning; weights are more effective at increasing muscle volume.
 
In weightlifting I see different benefits depending on the goal. If you go heavy you build muscle and strength but it requires more eating and a lot of recovery. If you go light with lots of reps you get shape and definition but strength doesn't increase much. The combination of both brings a good balance, the body looks lean and still has strength.
