In the past, we had wingers in soccer that we now refer to as traditional wingers. Those wingers hug the touchline. They were speedsters with exceptional dribbling ability to beat their marker and put in a cross into the box. Those seem to have gone into extinction.

We now have inverted wingers that want to cut into the box and shoot by themselves. Do you think traditional wingers don't have a standing in modern football?

Soccer is more practical now. Tactical setups don't alow the wingers of today to be touchline specialists. Wingers are set up to be inverted forwards. Full backs now do the role of the traditional wingers. That's why wingers have more goals now than before.
