Ravens Reacts Survey Week 15

gettyimages-2250560163.jpg

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the NFL. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Ravens fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.

The Ravens have dropped two games in a row and are now on the outside looking in of the AFC playoff picture. They still technically control their own destiny, but a guaranteed playoff spot would require winning out against the Bengals, Patriots, Packers, and Steelers.

Based on Sunday’s loss to Pittsburgh, Baltimore feels like far from a playoff lock. And if they miss the postseason for the first time with a healthy Lamar Jackson, the franchise will face much bigger questions than their starting offensive line or short-yardage play-calling.

So, what do you think? Are you continuing to lose faith in the Ravens’ direction, or is there a glimmer of hope that makes you believe they can turn it around? Vote in the survey below and let us know your additional thoughts in the comments section!

Ravens upgrade 5 players, downgrade 2 on Thursday injury report

gettyimages-2183938681.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens reported perfect attendance at Thursday’s practice, though tight end Mark Andrews and wide receiver Rashod Bateman were both added to the injury report.

Every other Raven, though, was a full participant, including Wednesday DNPs Chidobe Awuzie and Lamar Jackson. The other three players who were limited on Wednesday – Keaton Mitchell, Tavius Robinson, and Nate Wiggins – were upgraded to full participation, too.

Ar’Darius Washington had his third full practice in a row and appears to be close to his 2025 debut. Given his injury history and the severity of a torn Achilles, the Ravens may still be cautious and hold Washington out for another week.

Bateman may have re-aggravated the ankle injury he dealt with last week, but Andrews’ injury is a new one. Tomorrow’s injury report will offer more information about their availability on Sunday.

Here is the Ravens’ full injury report (* denotes a change in status):

Full participation

  • CB Chidobe Awuzie (shoulder) *
  • QB Lamar Jackson (NIR-rest) *
  • RB Keaton Mitchell (knee) *
  • OLB Tavius Robinson (foot) *
  • S Ar’Darius Washington (Achilles) *
  • CB Nate Wiggins (foot) *

Limited participation

  • TE Mark Andrews (glute)
  • WR Rashod Bateman (ankle)

AFC North Preview, Week 15: Ravens and Bengals rematch, Steelers look to pull away

gettyimages-2248802553.jpg

Cleveland Browns (3-10)

The Browns put together one of their best offensive performances of the season last week but still came up short of a victory. Their stingy defense surprisingly gave up 31 points and 184 rushing yards to the Tennessee Titans at home. That overshadowed their offense totaling over 400 yards and 22 first downs.

Cleveland was stymied on the ground, gaining just 61 yards on 20 carries. Quinshon Judkins (26 yards on 14 attempts) was shut down by the Titans’ defensive front. Shedeur Sanders, albeit completing only 55% of his throws, posted a career-high 354 passing yards with three touchdowns and another 29 yards rushing. The Browns had a chance to tie the game late but botched a two-point conversion try with a minute remaining.

If Sanders and the passing attack’s season-best showing can carry over into this week, they could challenge the Chicago Bears at home. It won’t come as easy, though, as the Bears are playing for postseason positioning and have a takeaway-happy defense. Also, the Browns are on the road instead of at home.

Running the ball more efficiently will be important to protect the football and sustain possessions. The Browns’ defense also needs to do a better job against the run. That will be a tall task against the Bears, who rank second in the NFL in rushing yards per game on the season.

Baltimore Ravens (6-7)

The Ravens lost a second straight divisional matchup on home turf last week, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers by five points (27-22). Baltimore was on the wrong end of some highly questionable officiating calls that proved costly, but that’s far from the sole reason for their defeat. The Ravens played incomplete football in all three phases, which has been a recurring theme for much of the year.

Offensively, the Ravens had just two scoring drives and nine total points in the first half. When they started sustaining drives and scoring more in the second half, their defense struggled to get stops to give the offense a chance to take the lead. On special teams, a missed extra point and two penalties were less than optimal. All of this played a part in the team falling to 6-7 and losing their division lead.

With no margin for error remaining, the Ravens are seeking to right the ship and avenge their Week 13 loss to the Bengals this coming Sunday. Lamar Jackson seemed to find some life last week, which will hopefully carry over into Cincinnati. Jackson and the Ravens’ offense struggled two weeks ago versus the Bengals, who are still plenty vulnerable defensively, so a bounce-back performance is more than possible.

On the other side of the ball, the Ravens have struggled to slow down Cincinnati’s offense in their past several matchups. They had more success in the first half in Week 13 but still wound up surrendering 32 points. The Ravens need to do a better job of generating pressure on Joe Burrow and containing Ja’Marr Chase, to the best extent possible.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-9)

The Bengals watched their playoff hopes all but evaporate last week in dramatic fashion. For much of the afternoon in Buffalo, the Bengals were in control over the Bills and appeared primed to pull off another big upset. They led by 10 points at halftime and again by 10 points early in the fourth quarter, 28-18.

From there on, the Bills went on a quick 21-0 run to take a commanding lead late in the game. Burrow’s pick-six interception with 5:25 remaining squandered the Bengals’ lead. Then, Burrow was intercepted again just one play later and the Bills promptly scored five plays after. Cincinnati managed 25 first downs and went 3-for-3 in the red zone with 34 total points, but another high-scoring output was again not enough to win.

This coming Sunday, they’ll be seeking a repeat performance against the Ravens of their beatdown in Baltimore two weeks ago. In that game, the Bengals’ defense had a season-best showing and forced five turnovers while allowing just 14 points. Repeating that exactly will be difficult, but the Bengals could still have a good chance to win if they can surrender less than 39 points.

Burrow may be without the services of wide receiver Tee Higgins again, who re-entered concussion protocol following last week’s game. Without Higgins in Week 13, the Bengals still scored 32 points in this same matchup and ran the ball well. They have to feel confident in their ability to move the ball on Baltimore’s defense, it’s just a matter of if their defense can up to the task once more.

Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6)

After appearing lifeless in a Week 13 drubbing at home versus the Bills, the Steelers bounced back with a crucial win on the road in Baltimore last Sunday. Pittsburgh’s passing attack had arguably their best performance of the season, with Aaron Rodgers throwing for 284 yards and completing a handful of explosive passes of 30+ yards.

The Steelers were not able to run the ball effectively and gained only 13 first downs, while also losing the time of possession battle. However, they won the turnover battle and enough played well enough situationally to pull out a narrow victory — which has been their recipe for victory over the Ravens often in recent years.

Now, with the division lead back in hand, the Steelers will look to start building some momentum. That starts with a home matchup on Monday night against the Miami Dolphins. Once left for dead at 2-7, the Dolphins have won four straight games to claw their way back to almost .500. Miami’s defense has allowed 17 or less points in each of their past four contests, so they’re plenty capable of giving the Steelers’ offense a challenge.

On the other side of the ball, the Steelers should have an advantage at home. The Dolphins’ offense, particularly in the passing game, have been up-and-down for much of the year and prone to turnovers. Pittsburgh’s defense ranks tied for second in the NFL in takeaways with 23 total. They may be without the services of T.J. Watt, however, who suffered a lung injury earlier this week.

Ravens designate 3 players as questionable for matchup with Bengals

gettyimages-2249362954.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens listed three players as questionable on their final injury report before their Week 15 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rashod Bateman tweaked his ankle in practice on Thursday and did not participate on Friday. He is trending towards missing Sunday’s game, especially considering the fact that he was listed with an ankle injury last week. It may not be the same issue – or even the same ankle – but if it is, the Ravens might opt to hold Bateman out for a week. His absence on Friday could have also been a precaution in the hopes the rest would keep him fresh for Sunday.

Bateman has not played particularly well this year relative to his breakout 2024, but he still plays a major role in Baltimore’s offense with the potential to go off at any time. His absence would be an opportunity to get DeAndre Hopkins more involved in the offense and give 2024 fourth-rounder Devontez Walker more playing time.

Here are the Ravens’ final game designations:

Questionable

  • Rashod Bateman (ankle)
  • Tavius Robinson (foot)
  • Ar’Darius Washington (Achilles)

Tavius Robinson and Ar’Darius Washington could make their returns to the field on Sunday after lengthy stints on reserve lists. John Harbaugh said on Friday that both have a chance to play; if so, they will be activated on Saturday.

Robinson broke his foot in October and has been on injured reserve ever since. The Ravens designated him to return last week, but he was not upgraded to full participation until this past Thursday. Washington tore his Achilles during offseason training and has been on the non-football injury list ever since. He made an impressive recovery and returned to practice less than seven months since his injury.

If they are not activated this weekend, Robinson and Washington will have one more week to practice before they must be activated or revert to season-ending injured reserve.

Mark Andrews picked up a glute injury on Thursday but returned to full participation on Friday. The other three players listed with injuries this week – Chidobe Awuzie, Keaton Mitchell, and Nate Wiggins – all practice in full on Thursday and Friday and have no designation for Sunday’s game.

The Bengals placed Trey Hendrickson on injured reserve earlier this week, so he and Tee Higgins will both miss Sunday’s matchup with the Ravens. Both were absent on Thanksgiving, too, though that did not seem to limit Cincinnati on either side of the ball.

Here are the Bengals’ final game designations:

Out

  • WR Tee Higgins (concussion)

Doubtful

  • S PJ Jules (ankle)
  • DE Shemar Stewart (knee)

It does not seem like Shemar Stewart will come off injured reserve to play the Ravens despite practicing in full all week. PJ Jules is a special teams contributor; his absence will not have much of an impact on Sunday’s game.

Ravens activate OLB Tavius Robinson, S Ar’Darius Washington

gettyimages-2193937303.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens have activated outside linebacker Tavius Robinson (injured reserve) and safety Ar’Darius Washington (non-football injury list).

Both players are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but their activation on Saturday indicates they will play.

This story will be updated with more information.

Baltimore Beatdown Week 15 mailbag: coaches, predictions, and more!

gettyimages-2251086869.jpg

Welcome to Baltimore Beatdown’s Week 15 mailbag. Apologies for taking so long to answer your last set of questions, but here they are! Submit more in the comments below and/or be on the look out for our next post seeking questions!

Make some predictions! How many wins and losses for the rest of the regular season? If you project them to make the playoffs, which seed and who do they play in the first round? (ursula)

Ursula, this was a tough question when you first asked it. The Ravens were in the middle of their win streak and appeared to be turning things around. But the problems with the offense remained, making the end of their season the true test of those perceived improvements. The defense put in a valiant effort against the Bengals but was let down by their offense, and neither side of the ball could put together a solid game against the Steelers.

So, with that context and the Ravens’ remaining opponents (CIN, NE, GB, PIT), they seem destined to miss the playoffs. If they make it at all, they will likely have won out and be 10-7. If they beat the Steelers, 9-8 feels possible. That would position Baltimore as the No. 4 seed with a wide range of potential opponents as the top wild card. The Chargers and the Bills feel like the two most likely options, and it’s hard to see the Ravens beating either.

Does Harbaugh have any say in game day play-calling, and if he does, why doesn’t he step in to correct clear in-game issues? In that same vein, will the coordinators cost Harbaugh his job? (BMore Champs)

BMoreChamps, these are all good questions that I will try to answer as succinctly as possible. First, if Harbaugh gets fired, I don’t think the coordinators will have ‘cost’ him his job. At the end of the day, the buck stops with the head coach, especially when this year seems to be a team-wide failure.

As for play-calling, I hear this question a lot. The first thing to know is that Harbaugh does not have much (if any) experience as the primary play-caller for either side of the ball. But, obviously, he plays a major role in the game planning and strategy each game. I agree that he could do a better job of stepping in and steering his coordinators’ play-calling based on the game situation, though. Sticking with the run and soft zone coverage in end-of-half scenarios are two examples that come to mind. And while I do not think every head coach has to be a play-caller, that is a worthwhile consideration for future hires, whether it’s at head coach or coordinator.

What do you really think about Todd Monken? Was the offense’s success in the past few years more a result of the roster than the play-calling? (The zone27)

There is no doubt Monken was a major part of the Ravens’ offensive success in 2023 and 2024. He was a clear improvement over Greg Roman, though, as you note, he was dealing with a better set of weapons than Greg Roman ever had. Monken’s scripted drives consistently produced points (often TDs) and his overall game-planning against each specific opponent was excellent. He also found the right ways to incorporate each players’ specific skillsets into his scheme.

This issue with his offense is that it works best with five-man protections rather than keeping in TEs and RBs all the time. The Ravens’ offensive line isn’t built for that, so sometimes, there are simply not enough pass-catchers for Jackson to target, especially as a release valve underneath. After last year’s success, it makes sense that Monken would be confident in a largely-unchanged unit, but he has struggled to adjust to the team’s issues this year. The offensive line, more than anything else, seems to be thwarting him at every time, but he’s still the offensive coordinator, so he bears some responsibility there.

What are the odds that both the Steelers and Ravens have new head coaches next season after an almost 20 year tenure? How could that affect the culture of these two teams and ultimately the rivalry? (CrabbyDave)

Apologies, CrabbyDave. it would have been ideal to answer this question before the two teams’ Week 15 matchup, but I think that game outcome offered some information, too. The first is that neither team, as they are currently built and performing, is a Super Bowl contender. Both franchises value stability and believe in making the playoffs every year. So if either misses it – Harbaugh with a healthy Lamar Jackson and Mike Tomlinson with his best quarterback in years – there is reason to think they will be fired. But again, prioritizing stability and continuity can, for better or worse, lead to a bigger impact of loyalty. The Steelers and the Ravens may not want to ‘fire,’ their coaches, neither one seems likely to retire, and both would likely receive interest elsewhere.

That’s why I think a trade might be the ideal outcome. I could see Tomlin in Tennessee and Harbaugh in New York, and other gigs will likely come available, too. Harbaugh’s connections to Michigan have already been discussed in the wake of Sherrone Moore’s firing. The Saints sent Sean Payton and a third-round pick to Denver for first- and second-rounders; that kind of return would be great for the Ravens and the Steelers.

If Harbaugh and Tomlin were to move on, that would obviously change the dynamic of the teams’ cultures and rivalry. However, both new coaches will be determined to set a strong tone against the other early in their tenures, which will likely keep the gritty, competitive nature of their matchups as a constant.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals Week 15 Game Discussion

gettyimages-2248804023.jpg

The Ravens are in Cincinnati for a rematch with the Bengals after a brutal loss on Thanksgiving. Both teams’ seasons are on the ropes with an uphill battle for the AFC North crown as their only path to the playoffs.

Baltimore is getting two key defenders back from injury – outside linebacker Tavius Robinson and safety Ar’Darius Washington – while the Bengals will once again be without defensive end Trey Hendrickson and wide receiver Tee Higgins. On paper, the Ravens should have the advantage here. On paper.

But on the football field, very little has gone right for the Ravens this year, and when it has, they have failed to take full advantage. In a snowy, cold game, the margins will be razor-thin with virtually no room for error. Baltimore has made plenty this season and will have to find a way to plug the dam on Sunday afternoon.

Baltimore Ravens Snap Count Analysis, Week 15: Ar’Darius Washington makes season debut in blowout win

gettyimages-2251888232.jpg

Offense

The Ravens only played 41 offensive snaps in this game. With the team holding a commanding lead late in the fourth quarter, a handful of offensive starters were pulled from the game including Lamar Jackson, Ronnie Stanley, and Andrew Vorhees. Stanley had exited earlier with a leg injury and missed some snaps from that as well. Backup rookies Carson Vinson and Emery Jones Jr. combined to play 10 snaps in relief.

Keaton Mitchell out-snapped Derrick Henry by one play (16 vs. 15 snaps). Both were effective on the ground against the Bengals; Henry rushed 11 times for 100 yards and Mitchell gained 66 yards on eight carries. Rasheen Ali was not far behind with 11 snaps of his own. He didn’t receive a carry but caught two passes for 32 yards with a 30-yard touchdown reception off a screen pass.

It was a game of highs and lows for Zay Flowers, who made two impressive catches including a 28-yard touchdown, while also dropping two costly passes as well. Flowers played 32 snaps and led the team in receiving again with 68 yards. Devontez Walker stepped into a bigger role (25 snaps) in Rashod Bateman’s absence but was not targeted. Deandre Hopkins’ 13 snaps (32%) saw him catch one pass for a long gain of 32 yards.

In a reversal of usual course, Charlie Kolar and Isaiah Likely tied with 21 snaps to lead the tight end room. Mark Andrews played 17 snaps and caught two passes for 18 yards, while the latter two were not targeted at all. In a run-heavy offensive gameplan, Pat Ricard’s 18 snaps also slightly outpaced Andrews as well.

Defense

Baltimore’s defense was on the field for 76 plays, much more than the offense, and impressively managed to pitch a shutout performance. Four familiar faces went the distance playing 100% of snaps: Safeties Alohi Gilman and Kyle Hamilton, CB Nate Wiggins, and LB Roquan Smith. S Malaki Starks and CB Marlon Humphrey closely trailed with 72 snaps each.

Gilman played a starring role with an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the game. Him and Hamilton each recorded eight tackles, while Starks had five tackles and a pass breakup. Joining the secondary for the first time this season was Ar’Darius Washington, who made his long-awaited return after recovering from a torn achilles injury. Washington played 15 snaps (20%) and made two tackles.

Two key defenders exited the game early with injuries: LB Teddye Buchanan (knee) and CB Chidobe Awuzie (foot). Buchanan played 12 snaps and Awuzie played 16 snaps. Trenton Simpson took on a larger role once Buchnan went down and finished with 35 snaps (46%). With no Awuzie, the Ravens primarily played three safeties and two cornerbacks, although T.J. Tampa did get on the field for eight plays.

Tavius Robinson returned after a multi-week absence and played 34 snaps. Dre’Mont Jones had a game-high five quarterback hits and led all edge rushers in snaps (51). Mike Green had an impactful outing as well in 40 snaps, as did Kyle Van Noy (33 snaps) — who made the highlight interception before handing it off to Gilman. Travis Jones, fresh off signing a three-year contract extension, had a dominant game as well in 51 snaps.

Baltimore Ravens playoff picture: What Week 15 win vs. Bengals means for AFC standings

gettyimages-2251904712.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens put pressure on the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 15. Baltimore’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals means the Steelers needed to win on Monday night to stick in first place in the division. Pittsburgh did just that, and the Ravens remain on the outside looking in.

The Denver Broncos won to move into first place while the New England Patriots fell to second after their loss to the Buffalo Bills. The Jacksonville Jaguars stuck in third with their win. The Pittsburgh Steelers play Monday night.

Elsewhere in the AFC playoff picture, the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss means they are eliminated from the postseason.

In the rest of the wild card race, the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans all won to stay in playoff position. It looks like Baltimore’s only path to the postseason is in the division.

The Indianpolis Colts lost in the waning seconds of their game to sit one game out of the postseason picture today.

Week ODDS: despite worse record, Ravens open as favorites vs. Patriots

gettyimages-1427330571.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens (7-7) are four games behind the New England Patriots (11-3) in the AFC standings, but they are still favored by 2.5 points for the two teams’ Week 16 matchup on Sunday night.

The game will be at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, where the Ravens have historically been successful, especially in primetime. But that has not been the case this year. The Ravens are 3-5 at home (3-3 with a healthy Lamar Jackson), 1-3 in primetime, and 0-2 in home primetime games. So while home field advantage still tilts the spread towards the home team, the Ravens have not been dominant enough in their own stadium to justify a bigger impact on the odds.

The Patriots, meanwhile, are a top-seven team in points and yards on both sides of the ball. Though they have benefitted from a weak schedule, they have won most of their games convincingly and own a +106 point differential. One on side of the ball, they have an MVP candidate in second-year quarterback Drake Maye; on the other, head coach Mike Vrabel has coached up one of the best run-stopping units in the league.

The Ravens’ shutout of the Bengals in Week 15 was impressive, but that still came against a 4-10 team and the worst defense in the league. It does not change Baltimore’s rollercoaster of a season and struggles against stronger opponents. This week, with both teams fighting to win their division, the projection of a close game makes sense. However, the Ravens have not shown the kind of consistent high-level football that would have them beating a team with a better record by, again, four games.

Ravens rookie LB Teddye Buchanan out for season with torn ACL

gettyimages-2243528675.jpg

Baltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Teddye Buchanan suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals and will miss the rest of the 2025 season.

Buchanan went down in the first quarter and had to be carted back to the locker room. Shortly after, Giana Han of The Baltimore Banner reported the initial suspicion of an ACL tear pending an MRI. John Harbaugh confirmed the diagnosis during his Monday presser.

Buchanan, 23, started 13 games this year and is the second-leading tackler on the defense. The fourth-round pick pushed Trenton Simpson for the starting job next to Roquan Smith all summer and took over in Week 2 after a solid NFL debut. Among all rookies, he ranks fourth in tackles and stops, per Pro Football Focus.

Like most rookie linebackers, Buchanan had plenty of early bumps as he adjusted to the NFL, but he has grown into a solid run defender and demonstrated improvements in coverage. Buchanan also wore the green dot during Smith’s two-week absence in October, which showed the coaching staff’s early confidence in his abilities.

Harbaugh said that Simpson would return to a starting role with Buchanan out for the year. The third-year linebacker played well on Sunday and finished with nine tackles, the second-most on the team.

Last year, Simpson was tapped to succeed Patrick Queen as Smith’s running mate but was benched after a rough stretch of games late in the season. Though he got the start in Week 1, Simpson only had a 30.6% snap share and has not topped that figure unless Smith or Buchanan are injured. He has generally been a reliable tackler but his athleticism has not translated into success as a blitzer or in coverage.

With Ar’Darius Washington back from injury, Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr may also run more dime packages on passing downs. Safeties Kyle Hamilton, Malaki Starks, and Alohi Gilman all saw some of their highest snap counts in the box on Sunday, too.

Buchanan is the third rookie linebacker in Baltimore to suffer a significant knee injury. UDFA Jay Higgins made the 53-man roster as a core special teams contributor and landed on injured reserve in mid-November. He has missed five games and is eligible to return to practice, but the team never established a clear recovery timeline. Fellow UDFA Chandler Martin replaced Higgins as a game day elevation for special teams duties, but he suffered a torn ACL early in the Ravens’ Thanksgiving loss to the Bengals. The returns of Tavius Robinson and Ar’Darius Washington give the team two more options to fill special teams snaps, but they could also promote or elevate safety Sanoussi Kane from the practice squad.

Ravens S Sanoussi Kane poached from practice squad

gettyimages-2183900516.jpg

The Tennessee Titans signed safety Sanoussi Kane off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad on Tuesday, per the NFL’s transaction report.

Kane, 24, appeared in the Ravens’ first six games of the season as a core special teams contributor with just 12 snaps on defense. He was waived during Baltimore’s Week 7 bye in favor of undrafted rookie Keondre Jackson, who impressed on special teams in his NFL debut in Week 6. The Ravens, perhaps fearing that Jackson could be stolen by another team, signed him from the practice squad. Kane cleared waivers and was re-signed to the practice squad shortly after. He rode the bench until he was tapped for special teams duties in Week 14 to fill linebacker Chandler Martin’s snaps after his season-ending torn ACL.

With Tavius Robinson and Ar’Darius Washington back in the fold in Week 15, the Ravens did not need to elevate Kane a second time. But after Teddye Buchanan’s torn ACL, Kane could have been in line for more playing time on special teams. However, Baltimore may prefer to have a third inside linebacker who can contribute on defense active on game days rather than a special teams-only safety like Kane.

Kane’s lack of a clear game day role may have motivated his move to the Titans. While the Ravens may have used him for another game or two, the potential return of linebacker Jay Higgins from injured reserve could quickly send Kane back to the bench. Practice squad players can turn down 53-man roster spots from other teams, but the Titans needed immediate safety depth after placing three on injured reserve on Tuesday (according to, well, me writing for Pro Football Rumors). Kane will see playing time right away on special teams and could even factor into the defense.

In Tennessee, Kane will reunite with ex-Ravens cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis. He will also play under former Ravens defensive backs coach and current Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, though the two did not overlap in Baltimore.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, 5 other starters miss 1st practice of Week 16

imagn-22338320.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens were without six starters at their first practice of Week 16, including quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Head coach John Harbaugh said that Jackson was “kept home” with flu-like symptoms. This is nothing new for the 28-year-old quarterback, who has popped up on the injury report with an illness several times in his career.

Harbaugh also indicated that Roquan Smith and Ronnie Stanley were both “held back” after minor injuries picked up in Sunday’s game. Smith played every snap, but Stanley went down in the third quarter and did not return. Rookie Carson Vinson finished the drive at left tackle, and the next time the Ravens were on the field, their backups were in to close out the game. In other words, Stanley could have been able to return to the game but never had the opportunity. Why put him on the field in garbage time with the team’s other key starters done for the day?

We already know, unfortunately, that rookie linebacker Teddye Buchanan is out for the season with a torn ACL. He should be placed on injured reserve in the coming days.

Awuzie has dealt with a few issues this year, including one with his hamstring that sidelined him in Weeks 5 and 6. He suffered a shoulder injury against the Steelers in Week 15 and got his foot caught in the field goal netting on Sunday. Harbaugh indicated on Monday that the injury was not serious.

Van Noy’s quad injury is the only one that has not been addressed by Harbaugh. As with the rest of the injured Ravens, we will know more later this week.

Here is the Ravens’ full Wednesday injury report:

Did not participate

  • CB Chidobe Awuzie (foot)
  • LB Teddye Buchanan (knee)
  • QB Lamar Jackson (illness)
  • LB Roquan Smith (knee)
  • LT Ronnie Stanley (knee/ankle)
  • OLB Kyle Van Noy (quad)

Limited participation

  • LB Jay Higgins (knee, designated to return from injured reserve)
  • S Keondre Jackson (ankle)

Full participation

  • WR Rashod Bateman (foot)
  • DT C.J. Okoye (quad)

The Patriots reported a banged-up defense on Wednesday with five starters absent: cornerbacks Carrlton Davis and Marcus Jones, linebackers Caden Elliss and Robert Spillane, and edge rusher Harold Landry. Christian Barmore was the sixth starting defender on New England’s injury report, though he was a limited participant with a non-injury related/other designation.

This story will be updated with more information.

AFC North Recap Week 15: Ravens end Bengals’ season

gettyimages-2251904194.jpg

Two AFC North teams faced off in Week 15 with their seasons on the line, which the other two faced opponents on opposite ends of the standings. Here’s how the division’s games played out:

Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6)

The Steelers kept their one-game lead in the division with a 28-15 win in the frigid cold of Pittsburgh over the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football.

Aaron Rodgers was efficient through the air, completing 23 of 27 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns on the night. DK Metcalf was his leading receiver as the duo connected three times for 55 yards and a touchdown. Metcalf tossed aside former Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick on the scoring play. Kenneth Gainwell led the ground attack with 80 yards on 13 carries while adding another 46 receiving yards on seven catches for 126 total yards.

The Steelers’ defense stepped up without T.J. Watt, who was inactive following surgery to repair a partially collapsed lung. The unit held the Dolphins to just three points for the majority of the contest until Miami led a pair of touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, with the game already out of reach. Pittsburgh’s defense sacked Tua Tagovailoa four times without Watt while also adding an interception courtesy of Asante Samuel Jr.

Baltimore Ravens (7-7)

The Ravens snapped a two-game losing skid with a 24-0 shutout over the Bengals in Week 15.

While the story of the game was the shutout performance by Baltimore’s defense, the offense did its part through the air and on the ground. Lamar Jackson looked more like his usual self on Sunday after an uncharacteristic slump since returning from injury. Jackson completed eight of just 12 pass attempts for 150 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The interception went right off Zay Flowers’ hands, who otherwise had a solid day with a team-leading 68 receiving yards and a touchdown on three catches. Derrick Henry ripped off multiple impressive runs, finishing with 100 yards on 11 carries.

The Ravens’ defense frustrated Joe Burrow throughout the game with a combination of pressure and strong coverage in the secondary, forcing him into two interceptions, the second of which was returned for a 68-yard touchdown. Kyle Van Noy made the initial interception but handed the ball to Alohi Gilman to finish the return. Not everything was positive for Baltimore’s defense, however, as Teddye Buchanan suffered a torn ACL. The fourth-round rookie has been a starter at inside linebacker for the Ravens and will now be replaced by third-year linebacker Trenton Simpson.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-10)

Cincinnati’s season was effectively ended this past Sunday as their 24-0 loss to Baltimore officially knocked them out of playoff contention.

Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ offense struggled heavily against the Ravens, failing to reach the end zone once after scoring 32 points against them just a few weeks prior on Thanksgiving. Burrow finished the day with 25 completions on 39 attempts for 225 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. While Ja’Marr Chase ended the game with 132 receiving yards on 10 catches, nothing seemed to come easy for the usual superstar duo through the air. Chase had multiple drops throughout the game, including one that resulted in an interception by Marlon Humphrey. The ground game struggled to get going as well, as Chase Brown led the team with 53 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Defensively, Cincinnati struggled to stop Baltimore’s rushing attack, allowing the Ravens to rack up 189 yards on the ground. The unit was able to sack Jackson four times, two of which came from rookie Demetrius Knight Jr., while Jordan Battle came away with an interception.

Cleveland Browns (3-11)

The Browns fell to 3-11 on the season with a 31-3 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 15.

A week after rookie Shedeur Sanders gave hope to Cleveland fans everywhere with a strong game against the Tennessee Titans, he delivered the disappointment that they are all accustomed to with a three-interception performance against the Bears. Sanders finished the game with 18 completions on 35 attempts for 177 yards, zero touchdowns, and a trio of picks while being sacked five times. Sanders also led the team in rushing with just 24 yards on two carries as the ground game produced just 50 yards overall. Rookie Isaiah Bond was the leading receiver with 89 yards on two catches.

Not everything is bad at the moment for the Browns, however, as Myles Garrett’s 1.5 sacks on Sunday put him just one sack behind the single-season record of 22.5 set by Michael Strahan and tied by T.J. Watt. Garrett has now gone eight consecutive games with a sack, with nine coming in November.

Ravens list 3 new injuries, upgrade 5 players on Thursday injury report

gettyimages-2248735431.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens got star quarterback Lamar Jackson back at practice on Thursday, but three players were listed with new injuries.

Jackson has been getting consistent rest on Wednesdays, and a minor illness was even more reason to keep him at home. He returned to practice as a full participant and will likely be off the injury report altogether by the end of the week.

Wide receiver Zay Flowers, center Tyler Linderbaum, and John Jenkins were all added to the injury report on Thursday. Flowers has a neck injury, which is always cause for concern, though it did not stop him from practicing in full. Linderbaum was limited by a knee injury, while Jenkins was absent due to an illness.

Absences from Flowers and Linderbaum would be huge losses for the Ravens offense, especially heading into a matchup with the Patriots’ top-10 defense. Both will be important to monitor on Friday’s injury report.

Here is the Ravens’ full Thursday injury report (* denotes change in status):

Did not participate

  • CB Chidobe Awuzie (foot)
  • LB Teddye Buchanan (knee)
  • NT John Jenkins (illness) *

Limited participation

  • LB Jay Higgins (knee, designated to return from injured reserve)
  • C Tyler Linderbaum (knee) *
  • LT Ronnie Stanley (knee/ankle) *
  • OLB Kyle Van Noy (quad) *

Full participation

  • WR Rashod Bateman (foot)
  • WR Zay Flowers (neck) *
  • S Keondre Jackson (ankle) *
  • QB Lamar Jackson (illness) *
  • DT C.J. Okoye (quad)
  • LB Roquan Smith (knee) *

The Ravens have not yet placed Buchanan on injured reserve. That move should come later in the week; the team may be waiting to see if Higgins is ready to be activated from his own IR stint. The undrafted rookie is in the first week of his 21-day return window and may need some more time to ramp up.

An absence from Awuzie is a real possibility after two straight missed practices, which would put T.J. Tampa in a bigger role. The second-year cornerback has held up when asked to play this year, though he has only seen extended time in two games.

Harbaugh said that veterans like Stanley, Smith, and presumably Van Noy were dealing with the typical late-season wear-and-tear and needed some extra rest on Wednesday. The returns of all three on Thursday bodes well for their availability this weekend.

Bateman is on track to return from his one-game absence, while Keondre Jackson and Okoye are unlikely to miss any time at all.

The Patriots’ injury report featured upgraded statuses for two players. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore (non-injury related/other) and linebacker Christian Elliss (illness) both returned to practice after missing Wednesday’s session. Cornerbacks Carlton Davis (hip) and Marcus Jones (knee) and linebackers Harold Landry (knee) and Robert Spillane (ankle) all logged their second absences in a row. All four starters could miss Sunday’s matchup in Baltimore, which would be a major boost to an offense that has struggled against elite defenses this year.

AFC North Preview, Week 16: Ravens and Steelers face pivotal contests

gettyimages-1427643876.jpg

Cleveland Browns (3-11)

The Browns lost their third straight game last Sunday and 11th overall on the season, in a dismal 31-3 beatdown at the hands of the Chicago Bears. It was their worst defeat of the year in terms of point differential and a big step back offensively after a promising 29-point performance against the Tennessee Titans in Week 14, albeit in another losing effort.

It was particularly a step back for rookie signal-caller Shedeur Sanders, who completed just a shade over 50% of his throws with three interceptions and a quarterback rating of 30.3. Only one of the Browns’ 12 offensive drives resulted in points, they rushed for just 50 total yards and converted nine first downs.

With the season completely lost, the last few games are all about youth development to build some momentum heading into next year. This week’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills is a big test. Cleveland’s defense, who have now allowed 31 points in back-to-back weeks, will have their hands full against a red-hot Josh Allen and James Cook-led Bills’ offense.

Where the Browns could find some success is on the ground, as the Bills’ run defense has been vulnerable this season. Cleveland’s rushing attack has struggled mightily over the last two weeks, though. Getting Quinshon Judkins going behind the offensive line will be key for the Browns to make a competitive game out of this as double-digit underdogs on the road.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-10)

The Bengals suffered a putrid defeat at home last Sunday, being shut out by the Baltimore Ravens 24-0. In doing so, the Bengals were officially eliminated from postseason contention — although their slim chances were a longshot anyways. Still, to go down in flames offensively like they did was disappointing, to say the least.

Cincinnati’s offense, which had scored 30+ points in consecutive games since Joe Burrow returned, was lifeless for most of the game. Two interceptions by Burrow, two failed fourth down conversion attempts, and three punts encapsulated all of the Bengals’ full offensive drives of the day.

The Bengals may have no playoff hopes to play for anymore, but Burrow and company will surely look to bounce back from a zero-point performance this coming Sunday. They should have a decent chance to do so against the Miami Dolphins, even on the road. The Dolphins are also now eliminated from the playoffs and benched quarterback Tua Tagovoila, meaning the Bengals will face former seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers.

That’s a favorable recipe for the Bengals’ defense, who did allow only 17 points last week. Miami’s rushing attack is still dangerous, and they’ll surely want to ground-and-pound all game, to aid their young quarterback and keep the ball away from Burrow. The potential return of Tee Higgins at wide receiver could give the team a little jolt on offense.

Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6)

Speaking of the Dolphins, they were eliminated at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. The Steelers earned their second straight victory by way of a 28-15 comfortable win at home on Sunday night. Pittsburgh’s defense had allowed just three points before the fourth quarter and less than 300 total yards for the game.

The Steelers found more rhythm on the ground offensively, totaling 135 yards with two rushing two touchdowns. Kenneth Gainwell’s role continues to grow as he rushed for a team-high 80 yards on 13 carries, with seven catches for 46 more yards as a pass-catcher. Aaron Rodgers spread the ball around to eight different receivers and completed 23-of-27 passes with two touchdowns and 224 passing yards.

Rodgers has looked more spry over the past two games, which is a welcome late-season development. The Steelers face a big test this Sunday as they seek a third straight win. They’ll have to topple the Detroit Lions on the road, who are also in a must-win situation for their playoff chances in the NFC. The Lions are also 8-6 but have one of the top-ranked offenses in the league.

With no T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig on the edge, the Steelers’ defense will be challenged. Manufacturing pressure on Jared Goff will be key to disrupting Detroit’s offense and creating turnovers. On the other side of the ball, the Steelers should be able to move the ball and score against a Lions’ defense that has allowed 27+ points in each of the past four games.

Baltimore Ravens (7-7)

The aforementioned Ravens cruised to their most convincing win of the season in Cincinnati last week, pitching a rare shutout defensively. The Ravens’ defense forced 12 stops on third down, had a season-high four sacks and allowed only 4.2 yards per play. Despite being on the field for 39+ minutes and 71 snaps, the Ravens managed to give up no points — highlighted by an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

On the other side of the ball, Lamar Jackson attempted a career-low 12 pass attempts but threw two touchdowns and averaged 12.5 yards per throw. The Ravens ran roughshod on the Bengals’ defense, totaling 189 yards on just 24 carries (7.9 yards per carry). With their offensive inconsistencies and unreliable pass protection in recent weeks, that’s the recipe for success for the team moving forward.

The next obstacle in their way of getting over .500 is an 11-win New England Patriots team, who travel to Baltimore for a primetime game this Sunday night. The Patriots had won 10 straight games before losing to the Bills last week, after they squandered a 21-0 lead at home. The Ravens are favored by 2.5 points but face a tall task against a well-rounded, well-coached Patriots team.

New England’s defense is one of the best in the NFL against the run this season, so whether the Ravens can find success again on the ground will be a deciding factor in this matchup. Defensively, limiting explosive plays and getting pressure on Drake Maye in the pocket will be key developments.

Ravens add Kyle Hamilton to final Week 16 injury report

gettyimages-2251086506.jpg

The Baltimore Ravens added All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton to their Week 16 injury report, which could threaten his availability for their upcoming matchup against the New England Patriots.

Hamilton sustained an ankle injury in Friday’s practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. The fourth-year safety has been Baltimore’s most important defender this season. His move from a traditional safety role into a undefinable one closer to the line of scrimmage has catalyzed the defense’s turnaround. There is no one player who can replace Hamilton, so, his absence could blow a hole in the Ravens defense, especially against a high-flying offense like the Patriots’. It is not easy to keep Hamilton off the field; this could be a true game-time decision based on his workout on Sunday afternoon.

The Ravens secondary will almost certainly be without cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, which will put 2024 fourth-rounder T.J. Tampa into a bigger game day role. Depending on Hamilton’s status, backup nickel Keyon Martin could see more snaps, too.

Here are the Ravens’ final game designations for Week 16:

Out

  • LB Teddye Buchanan (knee)
  • LB Jay Higgins (knee, designated to return from injured reserve)

Doubtful

  • CB Chidobe Awuzie (foot)

Questionable

  • S Kyle Hamilton (ankle)
  • DT John Jenkins (illness)
  • LT Ronnie Stanley (knee/ankle)

Jenkins’ availability is simply a question of how he’s feeling on Sunday. Elevating a defensive lineman from the practice squad on Saturday would probably be a bad sign.

Stanley went down in Week 15 and did not return, though the offense did not have another drive until garbage time. His limited participation in this week’s practice indicates that there is a real chance he misses the game, but the longtime Raven has tried to gut it out whenever possible.

If Stanley cannot go, the Ravens will have an interesting decision to make between veteran Joe Noteboom and rookie Carson Vinson. Noteboom was the team’s swing tackle to start the season, but he has been a healthy scratch in favor of Vinson for four of the last five games. Considering Stanley’s injury history, that alone spoke volumes about the coaching staff’s confidence in Vinson (and/or concern about Noteboom), and giving him a start on Sunday would say even more.
