How to watch Hurricanes vs. Flyers

gettyimages-2240189330.jpg

It’s nice that the folks at ESPN felt that the season opener for the Hurricanes warranted being carried on a national platform, and the game sure delivered. While several can complain about the fact that it was on ESPN’s streaming service, at least it meant they were able to show the entirety of the Storm Surge after the win plus the interview with Seth Jarvis was a treasure.

That said we as fans are used to our home team announcers calling the games. Now you could have synched the call from the Hurricanes Radio Network to hear the familiar pair, but tonight is the night that really feels like the opening to the season. Tonight we get the 6:30 PM pregame start time with Hanna Yates and Shane Willis sitting in the concourse of Lenovo Center, Mike Maniscalco up in the booth, and Tripp Tracy on the bench and interviewing Rod Brind’Amour. Then when the puck drops Mike and Tripp will guide us through the game as the Hurricanes take on the Flyers.

So now is the time to make sure however you subscribe to FanDuel Sports Network it is back up and active. If you’re a cable subscriber, double-check your guide to make sure you still have access as some companies have moved around the level that FDSN will be on. You’ll have time to call and get it updated. If you’re a streaming customer like Fubo, you should be all set. Living in the Carolinas and have cut the cord? You’ll need to sign up for the FanDuel Sports Network app.

As for today, both teams are coming off playing Thursday. The Flyers lost close one to Florida 2-1, while the Canes had their thrilling 6-3 win over the Devils.

Unlike the Canes who had an optional skate on Friday, Philadelphia flew in to Raleigh and hit the ice full-speed for practice. This is how it looked when they practiced:

Looks like main lines today are:

Konecny – Couturier – Michkov
Dvorak – Zegras – Tippett
Foerster – Cates – Brink
Grebenkin – Luchanko/Abols – Hathaway

— Charlie O'Connor (@charlieo_conn) October 10, 2025
Pairings:

Seeler – Sanheim
Ginning – Drysdale
Zamula – Juulsen

Gilbert rotating in a bit.

— Charlie O'Connor (@charlieo_conn) October 10, 2025

It’s the talk of Flyers writers that the skating Grittys have already shaken up the lines despite the close loss. Philly isn’t expected to contend in the Metro this year, but early in the season when teams aren’t familiar with each other surprises can happen. The Hurricanes will be facing a tough task before their State Fair trip out west begins next week.

So, if you aren’t going to be at Lenovo Center tonight to bask in Margaritaville Night, here’s how you can catch the action:

Time: 7:00 PM

TV: FanDuel Sports Network. Mike Maniscalco will handle play-by-play alongside Tripp Tracy doing color. Hanna Yates and Shane Willis will provide off-ice reports as well as host pregame starting at 6:30 and postgame that will run for about 30 mintues after the conclusion.

Streaming: FanDuel Sports Network App for fans in the Carolinas. Outside of the area, the ESPN app has you covered as they have every out-of-market hockey game available to watch.

Radio: Adam Gold starts pregame on 99.9 The Fan at 6:30 and includes interviews with Brind’Amour, Tracy, and others. At 7PM the Hurricanes Radio Nework (consisting of 99.9, 730 The Game in Charlotte, ESPN New Bern 107.5/1490, and ESPN Greenville 107.5/1570) picks up the FDSN feed. You can also stream the call on the Hurricanes app.

Odds: Hurricanes -275 Moneyline, Puckline Hurricanes -1.5 (-110)/Flyers +1.5 (-112), O/U 5.5 (-134/+110)

Canes Defeat Flyers in Overtime 4-3

gettyimages-2240106291.jpg

Saturday night’s game was one of those that the Carolina Hurricanes needed to win.

There was a lot of good, but it’s still evident the Canes have more work to do, especially in the defensive end.

Carolina started on time and jumped out to an early double-digit shot lead.

Despite the good start, the Hurricanes gave up a late first period goal. At the start of a power play, Philadelphia moved the puck effectively, got a weird bounce off the glass, and Carolina lost a man in the slot. Unfortunately, the Canes had a few defensive lapses throughout the game, allowing the Flyers to stay in it.

Carolina continued their second period dominance on home ice. Logan Stankoven got the Canes on the board by cleaning up a terrific individual effort by Jackson Blake. The Canes got in transition, Blake had the puck on a string, and Stankoven was there to bang home the rebound.

View Link

Eric Robinson and Taylor Hall continued their hot start to the season with a beautiful transition goal to bring the Hurricanes even. After the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour said that Robinson was “sensational,” and that he has to find more ice time for that he and Hall.

View Link

With just a minute and a half left in the second, the Jordan Staal line created a great opportunity with excellent board play. Jordan Martinook created space behind the net and found Staal for the one-timer. From the opening puck drop, this line was controlling the play along the boards, imposing a consistent physical game.

View Link

In his post-game comments, Staal joked that he had been waiting for Martinook to find him on the backside for that type of one-time goal.

It is interesting to note that the Canes outscored the Flyers 3-1 in the second period, but the teams had 12 shots each.

The Hurricanes seemed to settle down in the third with a 3-2 lead. The team was better with their defensive assignments and was controlling the play.

Unfortunately, the first mistake of the third was costly as Travis Sanheim drifted to the high slot as the Canes collapsed below the dots and buried it to tie the game. A blown assignment by Seth Jarvis, like on Thursday night, led to the game-tying goal.

There was extra hockey in Raleigh, and Philadelphia got the jump during the extra frame.

With just over a minute left, Bobby Brink gathered up a Sanheim rebound to end the game. However, Frederick Andersen was adamant that there was contact. After a review from the situation room in Toronto, goalie interference was called, and the goal was nullified.

Jarvis, Sebastian Aho, and Shayne Gostisbehere were next up for the Canes and were determined to end. The trio moved the puck flawlessly, and Ghost’s dish to Aho from below the dots gave him the space to feed a pass for a Jarvis one-time winner.

View Link

Just like on Thursday, Jarvis wins it after a defensive lapse earlier in the game.

The Hurricanes’ transition game was a strong point in the second period. However, throughout the course of the game, the Flyers had 17 scoring chances off the rush, compared to just six by the Canes.

Unfortunately, the power play went 0-4. Brind’Amour made a statement at the start of the fourth opportunity by starting the second unit.

These two areas, combined with rotations and spacing on defensive assignments, will certainly be points of emphasis during practice.

Brind’Amour did not have an update on Jaccob Slavin, who left during the third period with an injury. The team is optimistic that Slavin will be fine for the annual State Fair road trip that kicks off on Tuesday.

Hurricanes 6, Devils 3

imagn-27285965.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes started off their season with an impressive, 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night at the Lenovo Center.

Seth Jarvis scored twice, including the game-winner.

Newly acquired defenseman, K’Andre Miller also chipped in with two goals in his debut.

The home team outshot the visitors 33-22. They also missed the net 21 times, (many of those shots hit the post) and had 19 shots blocked for a total of 73 shot attempts.

Jersey had a total of 45 shot attempts, (22-13-10).

Carolina’s 4rth line got things started when Taylor Hall tipped in a Shayne Gostisbehere shot just four minutes into the game.

Gostisbehere also had a good game as he finished with two assists and was a +3.

In the second period, Dougie Hamilton tied things up for New Jersey on a backhander, but Miller scored the first of his goals when he bounced a puck in past Jacob Markstrom to give the Canes back the lead.

The Devils tied it up again before the end of the period, but Miller scored a powerplay goal from the point to give the Canes the lead once again.

Barely a minute later, Jersey tied the score once again but then Jarvis would take charge.

He scored the eventual game-winner off a nice pass from Sebastian Aho, then scored an empty-netter to put the game away.

Jarvis had hit the post a couple of times on earlier chances.

The 4rth line scored again with just 13 seconds left when Eric Robinson knocked one in.

Fred Andersen made 19 saves on the 22 shots he faced.

After the game, Brind’Amour praised Miller, calling his game “exceptional”.

Alexander Nikishin also was praised by the coach and played well as he had a couple of blocked shots and a takeaway to go with his assist. He finished with a +3.

The Hurricanes will have an optional practice on Friday before their next home game against the Flyers on Saturday night.

Carolina Hurricanes Jackson Blake

The Carolina Hurricanes are hitting the road for the annual State Fair road trip, and it’s a brutal six-game swing that gets started tonight at 10:00 PM ET against the San Jose Sharks.

The Canes are one of just three undefeated teams left in the NHL, having knocked off the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers on home ice to start things off with a pair of division wins.

The Sharks are 0-0-2 with a pair of brutal overtime losses. Most notably, former Cane Alex Nedeljkovic gave away a puck in overtime leading to an easy goal and win for the Vegas Golden Knights.

San Jose has other old friends in forward Jeff Skinner and defenseman Dmitry Orlov. Skinner has two goals in as many games to start his 16th NHL season, while Orlov has three assists and a plus-2 rating to his name so far with his new club.

Hurricanes blow Sharks away, win 5-1

gettyimages-2240675855.jpg

Thirteen Carolina Hurricanes notched a point, Brandon Bussi made several key saves notching his first NHL win in his first NHL start, and the Penalty Kill was a perfect 5-5 despite missing Jaccob Slavin as the Canes defeated the rebuilding San Jose Sharks 5-1.

Earlier in the day, coach Rod Brind’Amour confirmed that the defenseman didn’t make the trip out west and will miss an untold amount of time with an untold injury. In his place, the defensive pairings were shuffled slightly and offseason signing Mike Reilly drew in along side Jalen Chatfield as K’Andre Miller moved up to skate with Sean Walker. One other change was Mark Jankowski slid in for Jesperi Kotkaniemi, a healthy extra.

Not a lot happened in the first period in terms of goals scored, but it wasn’t for lack of chances. A sloppy period for the Canes led to three Sharks Power Plays, but they were unable to convert. Mostly it was due to the great goal work of Bussi, but there also was strong penalty kill work by the Canes even without Slavin. Walker and Miller would play almost half of the first on defense, showing how quickly the acquisition from the Rangers has acclimated to the Canes and earned Brind’Amour’s trust.

Despite the three Power Plays for the Sharks, the Canes still led in shots after the first 14-8, however as Cory Lavalette pointed out on Bluesky after the first, there wasn’t a lot of organization in those shots. It was likely a huge reason that Carolina wasn’t able to dent former Cane Alex Nedeljkovic. Carolina did get an abridged Power Play near the end of the first when Sebastian Aho was slashed on a breakaway, but it came up empty.

Big "shoot from everywhere" energy from Carolina

Cory Lavalette (@corylav.bsky.social) 2025-10-15T02:45:49.262Z

The second period was where the dam burst open for the Canes. The play on the ice was a lot more coherent as the new entries to the lineup started to feel comfortable with each other, and Carolina only had to kill one penalty—a hook on Blake.

Carolina scored first when Walker took a great feed from Aho, who had managed to draw a penalty against his former teammate Dmitri Orlov. The referee’s hand was barely up, though, when Aho was able to pass it to the open Walker and Walker nailed a one-timer past Nedeljkovic. It was a fitting reward for Walker for the strong work he did in the first.

View Link

Bussi had been stout up to that point, and even came up with a couple of ridiculous saves. He couldn’t stay perfect, though, as William Eklund was able to take advantage of a rough Aho turnover and get it past Bussi to tie up the score. Bussi recovered for the rest of the period, however, and the Canes were able to get the lead ten minutes later thanks to some outstanding work by Alexander Nikishin driving the net. William Carrier started the play along the boards and was able to get the puck to Jordan Martinook. Martinook drew all of the defensive attention, leaving Nikishin wide open for a pass. His shot went off the post but Carrier followed behind to slam it back in, giving the Canes a 2-1 lead.

View Link

A few minutes later Bussi once again made an outstanding save, and despite how new he was to the team saw the play driving up toward the other end and was able to get the puck over to Mike Reilly in the corner. Reilly whipped a pass 3/4 across the length of the ice to a streaking Eric Robinson. Robinson went in and beat Nedeljkovic to give the Canes a 3-1 lead headed into the second intermission.

View Link

To say the Canes dominated the second is putting it lightly. Not only winning on the scoreboard 3-1, they outshot the Sharks 19-9.

The game effectively ended early in the third period, when Jackson Blake grabbed the puck in the Sharks’ offensive zone and absorbed a hit as he got a pass out to Taylor Hall. Hall led a three-on-two with Logan Stankoven and Shayne Gostisbehere, and the trio completed a perfect series of passes that led to a Gostisbehere goal.

View Link

Blake would then be rewarded for going to the wall a little later in the period by taking a feed from Jalen Chatfield and blasting it by Nedeljkovic to give the Canes a 5-1 lead. Chatfield took the feed from Stankoven, and overall the offense seemed to ignite once Rod Brind’Amour made a swap on the wings by putting Hall alongside Stankoven and Blake, while Andrei Svechnikov was moved over with Robinson and Mark Jankowski.

View Link

The other highlight of the period was Alexander Nikishin announcing his presence to the league. Sam Dickinson went in and sent Gostisbehere to the ice with a trip. The referees were going to call a penalty, but before the whistle blew Nikishin laid Dickinson out with a boom that was heard throughout the arena. Dickinson responded to the point he and Nikishin were called for matching minors, but it was a sign that while a rookie in name, Nikishin is not going to be pushed around.

San Jose failed to record a shot on goal in the third period despite having another Power Play, and the rookie goalie Bussi was rewarded for his stellar work by being able to take basically the second half of the game off.

The Canes now continue the road trip in California, heading south to face off against Anaheim Thursday and then the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Carolina Hurricanes long road trip continues in Anaheim

Hurricanes will look to stay undefeated versus the ascending Ducks

The North Carolina State Fair opens up their gates on Thursday, Billie Eilish will take up residency in Lenovo Center for two nights, and thus the Carolina Hurricanes will continue their extended absence from Raleigh by facing off against the Anaheim Ducks. The game will face off from the Honda Center at 10 PM Eastern on FanDuel Sports Network.

The Canes are 3-0-0 on the season and looking to continue their undefeated start against an Anaheim team that some—such as Hurricanes color commentator Tripp Tracy—feel is in the hunt for the playoffs and will likely be a step up in competition from the San Jose Sharks team the Canes beat on Tuesday.

Carolina will see the return of Frederik Andersen between the pipes as backup Brandon Bussi was stellar in his first NHL start. Bussi stopped 16 of 17 shots, and kept the Canes in the game while they got their footing against a rebuilding Sharks team. Once the Canes figured things out, though, they poured it on. As the offense seemed to start clicking when Rod Brind’Amour swapped Andrei Svechnikov and Taylor Hall, expect that setup to stay the same Thursday. What isn’t known is whether or not Mark Jankowski will draw in again or if Jesperi Kotkaniemi will slip back into the center position of the line with Svechnikov and Eric Robinson.

The Canes will also look to see if the Sebastian Aho/Nikolaj Ehlers/Seth Jarvis line will be able to continue to grow. The trio has the makings of a dominant line, but communication is still a little short as Ehlers has yet to pot a goal in the first three games. Still, scoring hasn’t been a problem for Carolina as they have averaged five goals a game over the first three contests.

gettyimages-2240695387.jpg

On the other side is an Anaheim squad that is looking to get back into the playoffs for the first time since 2018. The Ducks had a busy June while the hockey world was getting ready for a loaded offseason. They first acquired Chris Kreider from the New York Rangers, having him join his old teammate Jacob Trouba, then traded Trevor Zegras for Ryan Poehling, and then finally acquired a goalie familiar with breaking long playoff droughts—Petr Mrazek.

Anaheim is 2-1-0 on the young season. They had a slow start by dropping their opener to Seattle, then won a wild one in San Jose when Nedeljkovic made probably a couple of the worst plays a goalie could make. The Ducks won that game in Overtime, and just barely avoided a second straight extra frame thanks to a Penguin DOGPOG (delay of game-puck over glass) penalty with less than two minutes left. Kreider scored near the start of the man advantage—his second goal of the game and both on the power play—to have the Ducks secure the win over Pittsburgh Tuesday Night.

Look for Mrazek to get the start, making him the second straight fomer Canes goalie the team will see after Alex Nedeljkovic started for the Sharks on Tuesday.

The two teams split the pair of games last season, with each team winning on the road.

Get your nap in and have your coffee ready for another late night of Canes After Dark.

Hurricanes at Ducks: How to Watch, Odds, and Game Thread

gettyimages-2241112247.jpg

Sean Walker is congratulated by teammates after scoring a goal against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

Here’s hoping you had your caffeine ready for another late night.

Tonight marks the second of five straight games that will start at 9 PM Eastern or later as the Hurricanes continue the annual State Fair road trip—although considering Billie Eilish will be in Lenovo Center tonight and tomorrow and Sabrina Carpenter played there during the opening weekend of the Fair last year has it become a case where it’s just now tradition instead of a necessity? Anyway, just kindly reminding all you folks that have to be anywhere near West Raleigh this weekend—have some grace on the roads and give yourself plenty of time to get to either event if you plan to.

It’s no concern for the Canes of course as they are currently in Southern California for the second game of the trip and first of the Southern California Pair. Tonight it’s the Anaheim Ducks, fresh off a 4-3 victory over another Metropolitan Division foe in the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Canes practiced on Thursday and coach Rod Brind’Amour spoke with Hanna Yates and Mike Maniscalco briefly afterward. The team then announced that they would not be doing a morning skate for this game, instead opting to go with the practice on Wednesday and to keep their legs fresh for Thursday.

Indications heading into the trip were that Brind’Amour would likely give new goalie Brandon Bussi one start and the expectation would be that Frederik Andersen would get the bulk. As he hasn’t played since Saturday, expect to see Andersen tonight, but with the way Bussi played on Tuesday it wouldn’t be shocking to see him in net against the Kings before the Canes have to deal with Vegas on Monday, Colorado on Thursday, and Dallas on Saturday.

We’ll likely find this out when Brind’Amour has some pregame availability at around 7:45 PM Eastern, and we should also get an indication as to whether or not Mark Jankowski will stay in the lineup or if Jesperi Kotkaniemi will trade back in. Brind’Amour will probably also hint at whether or not the Taylor Hall/Andrei Svechnikov switch he made at the end of the second period Tuesday will stick around to start this one.

On the other side, Anaheim has seen their game results get better over their first three. They started with a loss to Seattle, won in overtime against San Jose—if you want to see real heartbreak look up how they won that one—and then beat Pittsburgh near the end of the third period Tuesday thanks to an unfortunately delay of game penalty by the Penguins. Thanks to the win it doesn’t look like they’ll change up much in how they will roll out the lines, the only question will be if they continue with Lukáš Dostál as the goalie or go with the former Cane Petr Mrázek in net. We should know after their morning skate.

One other note—due to the all orange look from the Ducks and to avoid confusion on the ice, the Canes are going to be wearing their white lids with the new road uniform set tonight. This should also answer the question of what helmet they’ll wear anytime the team opposite of them has a red sweater—like Calgary, Chicago, Detroit, and so forth.

Hurricanes Keep Winning with 4-1 Victory Over Ducks

imagn-27343357.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes remain undefeated as they outscored the Anaheim Ducks, 4-1 on Thursday night in Anaheim.

The win gives them a 4-0 record, best in the league.

They also have a league best, +11 goal differential, 19 GF 8 GA.

Frederik Andersen had a great night between the pipes as he made 23 saves on the 24 shots he faced.

The Canes outshot the Ducks in every period and ended up with a 31-24 advantage.

Seth Jarvis scored two goals on the night and started off the scoring later in the first with he knocked in a rebound off of a Shayne Gostisbehere shot.

That goal gave Jarvis a total of 100 NHL goals in his young career.

Gostisbehere also had a tremendous night and finished with three assists.

Jarvis scored his second midway through the second period making the score, 2-0. He finished a pretty shot from a Jackson Blake pass during a powerplay.

The Ducks made it 2-1, a minute and change later but the Hurricanes broke the game open in the third.

First, Alexander Nikishin scored his first career NHL goal with a pretty shot and then Sebastian Aho knocked in a rebound from a Seth Jarvis shot, after Jarvis made a beautiful steal a moment earlier.

Carolina went 1-3 on the powerplay and killed all of Anaheim’s attempts this night.

The Canes will next face the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.

Carolina look to stay hot against the Los Angeles Kings in a weekend showdown

gettyimages-2241116560.jpg

It’s safe to say the beginning to the Carolina Hurricanes’ six-game Western road trip is off to a bang. Another night with a Canes game, another night with a Canes win. It’s becoming routine at this point.

With the 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks last night, the Hurricanes now sit atop of the NHL as the last remaining undefeated team with a 4-0-0 record. In the first two games of the road trip, Carolina outscored the Ducks and Sharks by a combined 9-2, giving them a league-leading +11 goal differential.

And they are looking to continue that trend Saturday night against a slightly struggling 1-3-1 Los Angeles Kings team. The game will be at 9 p.m. ET on FanDuel Sports Network.

The win over the Ducks was the Seth Jarvis game. Jarvis found the back of the net twice and added an assist on an impressive forced turnover in the offensive zone, putting the puck on a platter for Sebastian Aho. The goal was Aho’s first of the season and put the cherry on top to another dominant performance. Despite both his other linemates netting goals, Nikolaj Ehlers is still in search of his first point as a Hurricane. The highly-coveted free agent signing will once again be on goal-watch against Los Angeles.

As for the Kings — a team that has finished with 99 or more points the last four seasons — Thursday night was not as kind to them. After going up two goals in the first period, the Penguins netted four unanswered to complete the comeback.

In some ways, both the Kings and Canes have had similar fates over the last couple seasons. Perhaps LA is one of the few teams with just as frustrating playoff performances in recent years as Carolina, with the Kings falling to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round in each of the last four postseasons.

But the start to both teams’ seasons this year has been polar opposite. Five games in, the Kings have struggled, managing just three points thus far. But don’t let the record fool you, LA is a strong team looking to find their footing early in the season. The Canes will have their hands full, probably more so than their last two matchups.

gettyimages-2241444354.jpg

LA is led by a strong forward group, including Quinton Byfield and Adrian Kempe who both have five points this season. Anze Kopitar, who has four points in as many games, did not suit up in the loss to Pittsburgh. Kopitar has a chance to return to the lineup against the Canes Saturday though.

With a 6-5 barn-burning win over the Golden Knights, and two close losses to the Wild and Jets, LA has shown some fight contrary to what the results on paper show.

Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper missed the game against the Penguins with an injury, so anticipate the chance for Anton Forsberg to start in-between the pipes on Saturday. Forsberg has posted a 3.89 GAA and .867 save percentage in two games this year.

If Saturday’s late-night matchup is anything like the last two, it will be more than worth losing some sleep over.

Canes Remain Undefeated, Beat Kings in Overtime

The Carolina Hurricanes found another way to win Saturday evening, moving the team to 5-0-0 on the season and remaining as the only undefeated team in the National Hockey League.

The Canes started on time Saturday night in Los Angeles, and for the first half of the game, it seemed as though Carolina would run away with it.

Before the scorebug on FanDuel Sports Network began counting the time in the game, Jordan Staal scored.

The Captain scored just 12 seconds into the game versus Los Angeles.

Staal’s tally was his 300th of his career.

With that goal, Jordan and Eric Staal are just the fourth pair of brothers to score at least 300 goals each in the NHL. The Staals join legends Maurice and Henri Richard, Bobby and Dennis Hull, and Brent and Brian Sutter in this elite and unique club.

Hurricanes analyst Tripp Tracy said that the elder Eric texted him after Jordan’s goals, expressing his excitement for his brother.

Just after the conclusion of a Canes power play, Staal found himself alone in the slot and buried his second of the game.

At the 16:02 mark of the first, Carolina was up 2-0.

After 20, the Canes finished with a two-goal lead and a 13-8 shot advantage.

The concern was Shayne Gostisbehere heading to the locker room with a few minutes left in the first period. The Hurricanes announced during the intermission that the league’s highest-scoring defenseman this season would not return to the game.

After the first intermission, the Canes were ready to play. Jesperi Kotkaniemi returned to the lineup tonight, and made his case to stay on the ice.

K’Andre Miller’s great defensive pinch forced the puck from the Kings. Miller’s nifty forehand-backhand pass to Kotkaniemi sprung a breakaway, and KK finished on the backhand.

Less than a minute later, Trevor Moore’s one-timer from above the dots fooled Brandon Bussi due to a passing screen by former Hurricane Warren Foegele. Moore scored in his fifth straight game against the Hurricanes and cut the lead to two.

At the 14:36 mark, Foegele’s elbow to the chin of Bussi nullified Moore’s second goal of the game.

At this point in the second, the Kings had the moment. Bussi’s best save of the night came with about eight minutes left. A fumbled rebound led to a great chance by LA, and Bussi sprawled to make the pad save.

With just about four minutes left, Jackson Blake went off for a slash, and Los Angeles brought it to within one of an Andrei Kuzmenko power play goal.

Until this point, Staal had won 11 straight faceoffs. Just eight ticks into the power play, the Kings won the faceoff in their offensive zone. A couple of bounces on a shot from the point led to an easy goal on the doorstep for Kuzmenko.

Jordan Martinook was held with just over a minute left in the period to put the Canes back on the man advantage. Blake’s quickness and stickhandling caused Foegele to extend and trip him, and gave Carolina 1:26 of a five-on-three that bled into the third.

Nikolaj Ehlers was doing everything he could to tally a point on that power play in the third. The Dane had two great chances within the first minute of the third with a fake pass turned backhander and a feed to Seth Jarvis on the doorstep.

The Canes could not convert, and the Kings started to control the game.

Bussi deserves a lot of credit for keeping Carolina in the game. A wraparound chance by the Kings was just inches from crossing the goal line, and another sprawling Bussi save kept the Canes ahead by one.

With just under nine minutes left, LA had an excellent transition that forced a couple of Hurricanes defenders into each other and opened up a clean shot from Kevin Fiala to tie the game.

The Canes dodged a bullet with about three and a half minutes left when an Alexander Nikishin fumble at the blue line led to a Kings breakaway. Bussi stood tall in the crease, and Moore pushed his shot wide left.

Carolina squandered a three-goal lead, but made it to the extra session to at least earn a point.

Once the Canes got possession of the puck during overtime, it seemed as though it was just a matter of time. Miller replaced Gostisbehere as the defenseman assigned to Jarvis and Sebastian Aho.

The trio focused on puck possession, and this patience paid off when a feed from Aho pinballed to Jarvis who hammered it home.

Jarvis’s overtime winner was his fourth of the young season. He etched his name in the NHL scoring books by becoming the first player to have four game winners in the first five games of a regular season.

This is the third time in franchise history that the team started the season with at least five straight wins. This year’s squad joins the 2019-20 (5) and 2021-22 (9) teams with such a hot start.

The Hurricanes were an impressive 62 percent from the faceoff circle. Staal won 90 percent of his draws, with Kotkaniemi and Logan Stankoven both winning more than 60 percent of their faceoffs.

Miller and Sean Walker carried the load for the Canes’ defense after Gostisbehere left with an injury. Miller and Walker finished with 27 and 26 minutes on the ice, respectively.

After the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour commented that Gostisbehere said he “tweaked something” in the lower body, and it was not good news for a defensive corps that is already missing Jaccob Slavin. Stay tuned to Canes Country for injury updates.

After coming off their fourth straight playoff appearance last season, Los Angeles has lost four of their first five games to start the 2025-26 campaign.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Monday night in Las Vegas. Puck drop against the Golden Night is 10:00 PM ET.

For a team that sits atop the NHL as the last remaining undefeated team, don’t expect any drastic lineup changes tonight. As for goalie, Brandon Bussi could get the nod in goal tonight, but the Canes may stick with Frederik Andersen after his stellar performance against the Ducks. Anderson stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced in Thursday’s 4-1 win.

This season, Anderson has posted a 2.27 GAA and .899 save percentage while Bussi allowed one goal on 17 shots in his lone start versus the Sharks in the first game of the road trip.

As for the Kings, goaltender Darcy Kuemper is still nursing an injury, so look for Anton Forsberg to get his second-straight start. Forsberg allowed three goals on 25 shots in Thursday’s loss against the Penguins.

Continuing with the injury news for the Kings, they will be without captain Anze Kopitar for the second straight game due to injury. Kopitar got off to a quick start in the team’s first four games, putting up a point-per-game. Without him in the lineup, look for Phillip Danault to step up.

Tonight should be a little more of a test than the previous two games that began the six-game cross-country trip.

Get ready to see if the Canes can continue their undefeated start to the season with a win over the Kings. Here’s how you can watch the Hurricanes tonight:

The Hurricanes Travel to Vegas – Game Preview

gettyimages-2241920180.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes (5-0-0) continue on their long road trip with a game against the Las Vegas Golden Knights (4-0-2) to be played on Monday night with a start time of 10 P.M. Eastern.

The Golden Knights are another team that is predicted by some to win the Cup. Jack Eichel leads them with 5 goals and 15 points total. This point total leads the entire NHL. Next up is Mark Stone with 13 points and Mitch Marner with 8.

They are coming off an impressive, 6-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. While the Canes have a goal differential of +12, (GF 23 GA 11), Vegas is at +7, (GF 26 GA 19). Carolina will need to stay out of the box. The Knights were 3-3 with the man advantage against Calgary and they are second in the league connecting at 33.5%.

The Canes have two powerplay goals so far this young season and are at 11.8%.

Speaking of Mark Stone, he left the game a bit early on Saturday night after an apparent wrist injury. His status for this game is unknown at this time. Shayne Gostisbehere also left the game early in the contest for Carolina.

The Canes were scheduled to practice on Sunday, but there were no team reports of such and hence, no update on the defenseman who is currently tied for most offensive output for a blueliner in the NHL.

Seth Jarvis scored the game-winner for Carolina against the Kings, giving him four game-winners in his first five games which is an NHL record.

The Daily Faceoff has the Vegas lines as follows:

  • Barbashev – Eichel – Stone
  • Dorofeyev – Hertl – Marner
  • Holtz – Karlsson – Smith
  • Saad – Sissons – Kolesar
  • McNabb – Theodore
  • Hutton – Whitecloud
  • Lauzon – Korczak

Adin Hill and Akira Schmid are in goal.

Noah Hanifin is out DTD.

The Knights just signed Carter Hart which leads to interesting stories.

It goes without saying that the Hurricanes need to improve their powerplay. They also are missing top defenseman Jaccob Slavin and now Gostisbehere might be questionable. Once again, there has been no update on his status at this time.

We will have more about the game later today.

Right now, the Canes are slight underdogs.

Golden Knights 4, Hurricanes 1

imagn-27378748.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes will not go undefeated as they lost for the first time this season, 4-1 to the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night.

The Canes fell behind 2-0 in the opening period and could not pull even the rest of the evening.

Frederik Andersen had an excellent night but will pick up the loss for his efforts. The goalie stopped several grade A chances including one glove save which seemed like a sure goal.

The Canes were playing without the service of Jaccob Slavin and Shayne Gostisbehere.

Vegas was without Mark Stone.

Jack Eichel opened the scoring midway through the first period when his pass was deflected into the net by K’Andre Miller, who was trying to block the pass.

Shortly after that, Pavel Dorofeyev scored his 7th of the season to make it, 2-0.

Sebastian Aho would make it 2-1 four minutes and change into the second, but the Canes would not get any closer the rest of the way.

The Carolina penalty kill performed very well and kept one of the top powerplay units off the board, (0-4).

On the other hand, their powerplay was totally ineffective, (0-4). At one point, Adam Gold called them the “Keystone Cops” on “X”.

The team will take some time off and will continue on their road trip with a visit to Colorado on Thursday night.
