Saturday Night Open Thread: Can’t Bye Me Love

gettyimages-2237593599.jpg

(By NAS204PSU):

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday Night! I, NAS204PSU, am here at BTSC to bring you this Saturday Night Open Thread (aka SNOT).

It’s been an interesting season with Aaron at the helm, and it’s probably going to a wild ride.

Not this week, since it’s the bye week with no Steeler football tomorrow. On the plus side, we can’t lose. The downside is there’s another week till we see them play again. We’ll have to settle for rooting against the other AFC North teams or rooting for our fantasy football players. Either way, I’m sure your cardiologist would say it’s a good thing for your blood pressure.

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going, so let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

  1. Kenny Gainwell went for 99 yards and two tuddys last week in the win over Vikings. Who do you credit for the run game success:
    1. Kenny!
    2. Steelers OL
    3. Artie Smith
    4. Vikings DL poor performance/injuries
    5. Other – explain in comments
  2. The Steelers defense held Minnesota to 6 pts till the 4th quarter, though a few timely INTs were needed for this result. Behind 24-6, the Vikings then scored 14 unanswered 4th quarter points. Did the defense take the foot off the gas too much or is this strategy OK with a big lead relying on running out the clock?
  3. We’re 3-1 at the bye week, which is the 9th time we’ve been 3-1 or better in the Mike Tomlin era. We’ve made the playoffs each of those years under MT, so are you buying the Steelers making the playoffs in 2025? Why or why not?
  4. The Ravens are 1-3 and will be without Lamar Jacksons this weekend vs the Texans (and possibly longer). The Bengals are 2-2 and may not get Joe Burrow back till late in the season. Between these two AFC North rivals, who do you predict will have the more disappointing season: Ratbirds or Bungles? Tell us your end of season predictions.
  5. Daniel Jones has the highest QBR 79.1 and is 3rd in yards. Travis Ettienne Jr has the highest yds/att for a featured running back with 6.1 average (NOTE excludes WR/QB/RBs with few attempts that can skew the data).
Which is more surprising to you: Danny Dimes leading the QBR or Travis ETN having the highest yds/att ?
  6. What is your favorite thing to splurge on/buy?

In a tight end-friendly Steelers offense, where is the production?

gettyimages-2236790402.jpg

Over the past two years, the Steelers have significantly invested in their tight end room to help improve the offense.

Pat Freiermuth signed a four-year, $48.4 million extension on September 6, 2024. Freiermuth is the ninth-highest-paid tight end in the league and earns an average annual value of $12.1 million.

In a blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins, including Minkah Fitzpatrick and Jalen Ramsey, Pittsburgh acquired Pro Bowler Jonnu Smith. Smith played for Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in Tennessee (OC) and Atlanta (head coach).

Jonnu Smith’s cap hit for 2025 is $5.1 million. Arthur Smith’s offense centers around heavy offensive sets and two-tight-end personnel. It would be logical to believe the two veterans would be threats in the passing game through the first four weeks.

Where is the bang for your buck?

A fan favorite and Penn State alumn, Freiermuth caught a career-high 65 passes last season on 78 targets. This season, Freiermuth has been one of the Steelers’ biggest disappointments offensively.

Freiermuth totaled seven catches for 65 yards and didn’t reach the end zone before the bye. Aaron Rodgers had only targeted Freiermuth 10 times. In his last two games, Freiermuth has one catch for six yards. He was not targeted in Ireland against the Vikings. As a 6-foot-5, 260-pound tight end that has proven to be a constant threat over the middle of the field, how does that happen? The Steelers have underutilized Freiermuth, and Sunday’s game was a prime example.

Freiermuth only played 13 offensive snaps against the Vikings. The Steelers’ top tight end played fewer snaps than Darnell Washington, who played 48 snaps, the most of any skill position player. Even Connor Heyward played more snaps (16), including a direct snap on the Steelers version of the tush push.

The same can be said for Jonnu Smith. Smith has been more productive in terms of catches (14), but averaging only 5.1 yards per grab. The former Dolphins tight end has 71 receiving yards and a touchdown. Smith played the fewest of all four tight ends — 13 snaps — for the team’s second leading receiver by receptions. His catches have gone down from five, to four, to three, to two over the past four games.

For an offense that caters to being tight-end friendly, Freiermuth and Smith have been more like ghosts in the night on the field as we begin October. Not the same as Sam Darnold seeing ghosts — who is the only quarterback to beat the Steelers so far — but the offense is making them seem invisible.

The Steelers moved the ball at will against Brian Flores and an experienced Vikings defense. Gameplan wise, jumbo formations worked against Minnesota as Kenneth Gainwell rushed for 99 yards and two scores.

Pittsburgh saw an opportunity against the Vikings’ weakness and exploited it. But a game has become a pattern as we reach the quarter-season mark of the 2025 campaign.

I expected Freiermuth and Smith to contribute more. Jonnu Smith set career highs in targets (111), catches (88), yards (884), and tied his touchdown total (eight) playing in Mike McDaniel’s offense.

Freiermuth and Smith have combined for 21 catches, 136 yards, and one touchdown. Their combined cap numbers exceed $18 million.

The scheme has worked, so far, but it will be a different story when the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills come to town. Going to Detroit will require the Steelers to adjust and adapt to what their opponent gives them.

It’s time to prepare and execute with the tight ends in focus, just like the previous two offseasons have put Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith under the spotlight, and get their money’s worth.

Joey Porter Jr. set to make return in Week 6

gettyimages-2190601308.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 3-1 and coming out of their Week 5 bye, getting set to host the Cleveland Browns, a team they have not lost a regular season game to at home since 2003. And while the Steelers are 3-1, they’ve had to weather the storm with multiple injuries on defense.

One of those injuries was to starting cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who suffered a hamstring injury in Pittsburgh’s Week 1 win over the New York Jets. He hasn’t played in a game since, but made it known that will change this week.

“I’m back, surely,” Porter said via Alan Saunders of Steelers Now.

The Steelers still have injury questions surrounding Jalen Ramsey, and it looks as if he will miss Week 6 and potentially more games beyond that, which means Porter is getting healthy at a good time.

Report: Steelers signing former Panthers RB/returner to practice squad

gettyimages-2231386719.jpg

The Steelers continue to update their practice squad Monday, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting that the team is signing running back/returner Raheem Blackshear to the practice squad.

Veteran RB and returner Raheem Blackshear is signing to the Steelers practice squad.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 6, 2025

Per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Blackshear worked out for the team earlier in the day.

Blackshear was undrafted in 2022 out of Virginia Tech. In the NFL, he’s had stints with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and Tennessee Titans.

From 2022-24 with the Panthers, Blackshear appeared in 41 games, logging two starts. For his career he has 203 rushing yards with a 3.9-yard average, three rushing touchdowns, and 16 receptions for 138 receiving yards.

Blackshear has played the majority of his career snaps on special teams. He has 23 career punt returns with an 8.7-yard average, and 66 career kick returns with a 26.3-yard average. He’s yet to record a return touchdown.

Blackshear, listed at 5’9, 195 pounds coming out of college, reportedly ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at his pro day.

The Steelers have yet to announce the Blackshear signing or a corresponding release to make room for him. Pittsburgh already filled its open practice squad spot with the signing of safety Jack Henderson earlier Monday.

Once the signing is made official, Blackshear could be a candidate to be elevated from the Steelers’ practice squad on gamedays thanks to his returner abilities, especially if Calvin Austin III misses Pittsburgh’s Week 6 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Mike Tomlin provides encouraging news on Jalen Ramsey, Calvin Austin

gettyimages-2238060028.jpg

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ bye week came at an opportune time, as key starters who have been on the shelf appear set to return, giving the team a significant boost.

During his weekly Tuesday afternoon press conference, Tomlin provided multiple updates on the injury front via the team’s YouTube channel.

Joey Porter Jr. missed the team’s last three games after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1 against the Jets. He was a limited participant in practice leading up to their game in Ireland, but the team was cautious in their approach.

Alex Highsmith suffered a high ankle sprain two weeks ago, but the Steelers pass-rush didn’t miss a beat.

Tomlin said that the “Arrow is pointed up in their participation.”

Jaylen Warren was a surprise inactive against the Vikings, but Tomlin said he “looked really good yesterday,” and it appears he is on track to suit up.

Unfortunately, they did suffer two significant injuries in Dublin, as Jalen Ramsey left the game with a hamstring injury, and Calvin Austin III was transported to the hospital with a shoulder injury.

Regarding those two, Tomlin said they were “limited early part of the week” – but could perk up at the latter part of the week.

“Both have been highly aggressive in their rehabilitation over the bye week,” Tomlin said.

Per usual, Tomlin stated the quality of their participation this week will determine if they play. Considering the initial worries for both Austin and Ramsey, though, it looks like they’ll both have a chance to suit up Sunday.

The Steelers will host the Cleveland Browns this weekend, aiming to improve to 4-1 and create a significant gap between themselves and the rest of the AFC North. They are currently a 5.5 point favorite according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Mike Tomlin explains lack of snaps for Pat Freiermuth

gettyimages-2236288560.jpg

Pat Freiermuth has seven catches for 65 yards and no touchdowns for the Steelers over the first four games of 2025. Aaron Rodgers had only targeted Freiermuth 10 times.

It’s a puzzling reality for one of the Steelers’ top targets, especially a well-respected and well-compensated one.

Freiermuth signed a four-year, $48.4 million extension prior to the 2024 season and is the ninth-highest-paid tight end in the NFL.

Mike Tomlin said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday that schematics are matchup-based.

“We have a certain personality, particularly when we play 4-3 (front) teams,” Tomlin said. “I haven’t been bashful about that. That’s why we drafted Darnell Washington.”

Freiermuth only played 13 offensive snaps against the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland. Washington played 48 snaps, the most of any skill position player. The Vikings’ four defensive linemen alignment shifted the Steelers’ game plan towards 6-foot-7, 264-pound Washington.

“You can’t play 4-3 teams with 250-pound tight ends. You can’t,” Tomlin said. “Their weight class is in combat sports for a reason. When the edge people are 300 pounds, you better have somebody out there that looks like that animal. That was our intention (against) Minnesota.”

The Steelers’ course of attack paid off. In the absence of running back Jaylen Warren, Kenneth Gainwell rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Arthur Smith’s offense combined for 131 yards rushing.

“It’s unfair at times to ask guys like Pat Freiermuth and Connor (Heyward) to block 4-3 ends,” Tomlin said. “That’s not realistic if you want to have a really good run game day.”

The Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals, the Steelers’ next two opponents, both play base 4-3 defenses. Could the limited play and production for Freiermuth continue??

“As we move into divisional play in the next couple of weeks and we’re playing two 4-3 teams, chances are you’re going to see more of that,” Tomlin said.

In his last two games, Freiermuth has one catch for six yards. He was not targeted in Ireland against the Vikings.

The 6-foot-5 target from Penn State has underperformed, but hasn’t been utilized very much through four games. He doesn’t seem to be on the same page as Aaron Rodgers, with Rodgers visibly working out the kinks with Freiermuth during games. Even tight end/fullback Connor Heyward (16) played more snaps during last week’s win.

Tomlin didn’t sound eager to say that will soon change.

“I’m not talking about the totality of four games, but certainly last week,” Tomlin said. “The matchup component has a lot to do with how we distribute snaps at that position.”

The Steelers host the Browns on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Steelers work out 2 LBs, including former top-10 pick

imagn-26915157.jpg

The Steelers worked out linebackers Isaiah Simmons and Michael Barrett on Wednesday, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reported.

Simmons was the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, a safety/linebacker hybrid who ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at 6’4, 238 pounds at the NFL Combine. However, his career hasn’t lived up to his draft status. After three years in Arizona, Simmons was traded to the New York Giants for a seventh-round pick.

Simmons played in 34 games over two years as a Giant, but he started just five. In 2024, he had 21 total tackles, two passes defensed, and no sacks or tackles for loss. However, his role has grown on special teams, with Simmons playing 370 snaps on that side of the ball over the last two years.

— Bobby Skinner (@BobbySkinner_) October 6, 2024

Simmons signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2025 but didn’t make the team’s initial roster.

Barrett is a more recent draft pick, going to the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan. In his final year as a Wolverine, he recorded 65 total tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles, two passes defensed, and four tackles for loss. He measured in at 5’11, 233 pounds at the NFL Combine, and reportedly ran a 4.7-second 40-yard dash at his pro day.

Michael Barrett #23 is the most underrated linebacker in this class. Look at the depth he gets here to cover the seam. QB throws (terrible placement) because his back is turned, but Barrett gets his head back around and almost gets the pick.pic.twitter.com/3K9560NTz4

— Nick Martin (@themicknartin) April 12, 2024

Barrett has yet to play in a regular season NFL game, but he has been part of a trade, going from the Panthers to the Seahawks in exchange for cornerback Michael Jackson in August of 2024. He was also drafted with the pick the Steelers swapped with the Panthers in the Dionate Johnson/Donte Jackson trade in 2024 (the Steelers selected Logan Lee).

Barrett has spent time with the Browns, Packers, and Raiders in the NFL since. Most recently, he was with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions.

The Steelers didn’t make any immediate signings following the workouts.

Let’s talk Steelers: Who’s your favorite Steeler?

imagn-27193206.jpg

Coming off their bye week, the Steelers haven’t played in nearly two weeks. As a result, it’s getting a bit harder to come up with relevant questions that haven’t either been asked before or feel like desperately reaching for engagement.

So let’s keep it simple on this Thursday ahead of Pittsburgh’s Week 6 matchup against the Cleveland Browns…

Who’s your favorite Steeler?

Extra credit if you have an answer considering all-time Steelers, but for the intent of this question, I’m asking for your favorite current Steeler. And what’s your reasoning?

It’s fair to say that, although early in the season, this iteration of the Pittsburgh Steelers has been remarkably drama-free and easy to root for, any perceived on-field critiques aside. There are plenty of strong candidates as well — classic picks like T.J. Watt or Cam Heyward, or those of the “my guy” variety such as Ben Skowronek or Darnell Washington.

Ben Skowronek: Good special-teamer pic.twitter.com/DNq3R2Uz8g

— Ryland Bickley (@_Ryland_B) May 17, 2025

While this is hardly a serious question, I’d tend to lean towards the latter. Skowronek would probably be my pick. He’s been an unsung hero for the Steelers on both offense and special teams over his time in Pittsburgh, and he was once again laying out big blocks in the run game in the Steelers’ most recent win.

Over the last two weeks, the #Steelers rank 3rd in rushing success rate

Have really liked how Arthur Smith has diversified the run game, especially with tosses and counters

This counter with Ben Skowronek pulling proved effective in Week 4. Also used Darnell Washington there pic.twitter.com/SwGhbWzlOV

That’s a Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver right there.

Eagles at Giants: Thursday Night Football open thread

gettyimages-2180070437.jpg

Welcome to Week 6 of the NFL season! Tonight, it’s an NFC East battle between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants.

Philadelphia, 4-1, remains atop the NFC East standings despite having suffered its first loss last week in a 21-17 defeat against the Denver Broncos.

The Giants, on the other hand, are last in their division as the lone 1-4 team in the East. New York has now benched Russell Wilson for the last two games in favor of first-round rookie Jaxson Dart, who’s had his fair share of ups and downs as the starting quarterback (two passing touchdowns, two interceptions last week).

Who will you be rooting for? What will you be watching for? And who do you have in fantasy? Let us know, and enjoy the game here at BTSC.

Reports: Steelers signing former Browns edge rusher, met with familiar WR

gettyimages-2227993828.jpg

The Steelers have reportedly made a weekend roster move, with NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo posting late Saturday that Pittsburgh is signing edge rusher K.J. Henry to the team’s practice squad.

The #Steelers are signing former #Browns DE K.J. Henry to their practice squad. Henry had a brief stop with the #Eagles over the past week and now joins the other PA team after a workout earlier this week. pic.twitter.com/zOxUXqqiSD

— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) October 10, 2025

Henry had a workout earlier this week with the Steelers. You can read what we wrote about him then below:

Henry was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders. He played college football at Clemson, where he totaled 51 tackles, 3.5 sacks, six passes defensed, and nine tackles for loss in his final NCAA season.

At the 2023 NFL Combine, Henry was listed at 6’4, 251 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.63 seconds.

Henry played in 10 games his rookie year, logging all three of his career starts. He had 19 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, and two passes defensed.

In 2024, appeared in games with both the Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys. Combined, he played in four games with three tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss. He’s also had stints with the Eagles and Browns; he won the 2024-25 Super Bowl with the former as a member of the practice squad. Henry has 144 career special teams snaps.

Pittsburgh has not yet made the move official or made a corresponding release to make room for Henry on the practice squad.

And per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Steelers also checked in on some free agents over the weekend: working out linebacker Otis Reese and defensive end Ben Stille, and meeting with wide receiver Brandon Johnson and offensive tackle Bayron Matos.

Johnson is the headliner of the list, a veteran who has spent time in the past with the Steelers. He caught one pass for nine yards last season in Pittsburgh, and made some plays in the 2025 preseason as well.

Saturday Night Open Thread: If it’s Brown, drop it down

gettyimages-2188899042.jpg

Live from Delaware, it’s Saturday Night! I, NAS204PSU, am here at BTSC to bring you this Saturday Night Open Thread (aka SNOT).

I grew up just an hour and a half drive on I-90W from Cleveland. In Erie, PA, you would find residents were usually fans of one of three NFL teams: Bills, Browns, or Steelers. As my parents both hail from just outside the ‘Burgh, the Steelers are in my blood. I spent every few weeks making the 2+ hour drive to the Pittsburgh area, visiting relatives.

Having come from a large family, my maternal grandmother hosted Sunday dinners for her 4 siblings and all their respective children, grandchildren (including myself), and eventually even a few great-grand children. The Steelers games were part of the tradition of course.

I can remember during one of my single digit years, a distinct memory of my family’s Steeler fandom. With over twenty relatives crammed around grandma’s living room TV for a Steeler game, none were louder than my then-70+ great Aunt screaming “hit him, tackle him!” I am certain, as this was the late 80s, it was not a consequential game. That is the kind of passion my family had for the Steelers.

That passion also fuels a rivalry with the Browns. It was known we didn’t like them. In 1996, they tried to run to Baltimore and transition themselves into purple. We still didn’t like the new them, even if they weren’t legally “The Browns.”Then, in 1999, the Browns resurrected. We still don’t like the new-old them.

There are a few games that are more firmly burned in my memory than the 2020 Wildcard game that saw the Baker Mayfield led Browns dismantle an aging Ben Roethlisburger led Steelers. The very first play from scrimmage had Maurkice Pouncey sail the snap over Ben’s head, which was recovered for a Cleveland touchdown. Multiple Big Ben interceptions and defensive failings later, the Browns were up 28-0. It was never really close. Even with 500+ passing yards and 4 TDs from Ben didn’t make up for that first fumble and 4 INTs. Especially when your defense gives up 5 TDs and has zero take-aways.

I loathe the Browns. I hope Aaron and company hang 50+ on them and TJ, Cam, and the rest sack Dillon Gabriel to next week. The Brown bag lunch is something that deserves to be lit on fire and left on their porch. Ding, dong Cleveland. We’re waiting for ya!

This 6 pack of questions is here to get the conversation going, so let us know what you’re eating/drinking!

  1. Mike Tomlin’s name was thrown out as a coach of the year candidate (regular season only award). What does he have to do to win it?
  2. The early bye week allowed a few nicked up Steelers to heal, though Calvin Austin is OUT. Which of these injured Steelers (assuming they play) will have the biggest impact on the Browns game.
    1. CB Jalen Ramsey
    2. WR Ben Skowronek
    3. CB Joey Porter Jr.
    4. RB Jaylen Warren
    5. EDGE Alex Highsmith
  3. Per Dawgs by Nature, “the Browns are No. 1 in the NFL in run defense (75.6 yards per game), No. 2 in total defense (247.8 yards per game), and tied for fourth in pass defense (172.2 yards per game).” Do you see the Steelers offense out gaining the Browns average in any of those categories? Why/Why not?
  4. More WR trade rumors surround the Steelers. Assuming the Steelers trade for someone before the trade deadline, what should be the next rumor articles series:
    1. The Steelers should trade for this young QB
    2. The Steelers should trade for this young OL
    3. The Steelers should have drafted this rookie stud.
    4. The Steelers should have drafted this young star.
    5. Other: write in comments
  5. The Eagles, reigning Super Bowl champs and presumed favorite to repeat a Super Bowl appearance for the NFC, lost while visiting their division rival NY Giants. Does this give you heartburn about our road TNF game vs. Joe Flacco and the Bungals in Week 7? Why or why not?
  6. The weather finally feels like fall here in Delaware (low 60s during the day, 40/50s at night). What is the best way to enjoy an outdoor fire pit?
    1. Roasting marshmallows/Smores
    2. Glass of wine / Cold beer / bottle of hooch
    3. Roasting meat (hotdogs, brats, kielbasa, etc)
    4. Philosophizing with loved ones
    5. In silence, staring at the orange flames dancing, casting fleeting shadows in the darkness around.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-1 after defeating the Cleveland Browns 23-9 in Week 6. They now get ready to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night, a day that has been their kryptonite. The Steelers are 14-21 all-time in Thursday night games, and 1-5 in their last six.

The Steelers will face Joe Flacco, whom the Browns traded within the division ahead of Week 6, following Jake Browning’s eight interceptions in four games. Mike Tomlin was asked about the trade, to which he took a shot at Browns general manager Andrew Berry for making such a move.

“Andrew Berry must be a lot smarter than me or us, because it doesn’t make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening-day starter to a division opponent that’s hurting in that area,” Tomlin said during his Monday press conference. “But that’s just my personal feelings.”

The Steelers lost to Joe Flacco in Week 4 of 2024 when he came in for an injured Anthony Richardson to lead the Colts to a 27-24 win. The Steelers almost certainly would have rather faced Browning than Flacco, who knows what the Steelers will look to do, far more than Browning would.

Steelers host former All-Pro special-teamer for visit

gettyimages-2188299507.jpg

The Steelers hosted veteran safety and former All-Pro special-teamer George Odum for a visit on Tuesday, KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reported.

Odum went undrafted in 2018 out of Central Arkansas, signing with the Colts. He played through 2021 in Indianapolis before spending 2022-24 with the San Francisco 49ers. Over his career he has 12 starts, including two last season. He has 200 career total tackles, nine pass deflections, and three interceptions.

Now 31, Odum has made most of his NFL impact as a core special teamer. On that side of the ball he’s played 2,056 career snaps, including 214 last season. He was named a first-team All-Pro special teamer in 2020 and made the second team in 2022.

The timing of Odum’s visit is significant. Steelers veteran safety and former All-Pro special-teamer Miles Killebrew suffered a knee injury deemed “significant” during Pittsburgh’s Sunday win over the Cleveland Browns. Killebrew hasn’t practiced yet this week, and it remains to be seen if he’s a candidate for injured reserve.

Steelers Read & React Week 7 preview — What to expect against the Bengals

gettyimages-2240629669.jpg

The Steelers are riding high after a two-score victory over the Browns in Week 6. Following the win, they hold a 2.5-game lead in the AFC North and control their destiny, as the rest of the AFC North hasn’t managed a win since the Browns beat the Packers in Week 3.

While the Steelers have built up momentum, Thursday games have been a challenge for the Steelers under Mike Tomlin. Pittsburgh is 9-10 overall on Thursday nights, and 2-8 on the road.

What do the Steelers need to do to avoid a Thursday night disappointment?

What to expect from the Bengals’ offense

PPG: 17.2 (29th)

RP
: Unless you’re a new fan, you already have a good idea of what to expect from the Bengals. The premise of their team has been the same since they drafted quarterback Joe Burrow and receiver Tee Higgins in 2020, and later added Ja’Marr Chase in 2021: throw the pill around the yard.

After their Super Bowl run during the 2021 season, this became even more of a focus as the team let their defensive talent erode in order to prioritize paying their quarterback and star receivers. The idea was simple enough: score enough to make the fluctuating state of their defense irrelevant. Ryland will have more on that in the next section.

However, in recent years, the Bengals have become intimately familiar with the old saying “the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” Burrow has struggled to stay on the field, and the injury bug has bitten him again in 2025. During the second quarter of the Bengals’ Week 2 contest with Jacksonville, Burrow suffered a brutal toe injury that will reportedly see him miss a minimum of three months.

How quickly the Bengals’ house of cards has collapsed.

The offense was off to a slow start with Burrow, and things have only devolved in his absence. Backup Jake Browning was somehow able to gut out a win against the Jaguars, despite throwing three interceptions, but the Bengals have gone winless since. As you’ll note from the stats above, the Bengals are a bottom-four team in passing, rushing, and points scored. That’s less than ideal for a team that’s structured itself to rely on a supercharged offense.

After three abysmal starts that proved Browning wasn’t up to snuff, the Bengals’ hand was forced. They made a surprising intra-division trade with Cleveland to acquire 40-year-old Joe Flacco, a familiar divisional foe who is now just a Steelers stamp away from completing his own personal AFC North bingo card.

The trade seemingly rankled Mike Tomlin, but considering how Flacco has actually performed in the year 2025, the move amounts to little more than a wet fart.

If we look at passing EPA, Browning (-60.6) ranked 32nd out of 34 qualified passers per NFL Next Gen Stats. And what about Flacco? The Browns failed to eclipse 17 points in any of his four starts, and even if we include his debut with Cincinnati, Flacco’s performance (-68.5) lands right behind Browning and only beats out rookie Cam Ward, who’s languishing in the hapless Titans’ offense. Coincidentally, the Titans were led by former Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan until his firing on Monday. That doesn’t mean much for our purposes, but it still felt worth mentioning.

Not a fan of EPA and want more traditional stats? How about Flacco’s 59.5% completion rate or his four touchdowns versus six interceptions? This year, Flacco has managed to throw for more yards than Browning – 1,034 versus 757 – but even Browning has thrown more touchdowns (6), albeit with more interceptions (8) too.

For what it’s worth, Flacco did look better against the Packers than he or Browning had looked previously this season. The Bengals eclipsed their season average for passing yards (213 net yards) and didn’t turn the ball over, but they still managed only 18 points. Flacco was often under duress behind a shaky line in Cleveland, but the Bengals’ is arguably worse. That likely contributed to his 2.35-second average time to throw and his 5.9 average depth of target on Sunday – Aaron Rodgers has averages 2.51 seconds to throw and an ADoT of 5.8 for the Steelers this season.

It resulted in a mostly unimpressive debut, even if it felt like a small upgrade. The Bengals didn’t push the ball downfield often, as the reel below will show.

Not too dissimilarly from how Rodgers has operated in PIT, during Flacco's debut with Cincy, 36 of his 45 attempts traveled less than 10 air yards pic.twitter.com/B5Nxk10Tfy

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) October 15, 2025

So what is it that Flacco provides? Experience and a willingness to push the ball into tight windows. While they haven’t exactly been up to the standards of Flacco’s peak during his Super Bowl MVP days, when you have a couple of thoroughbreds like Chase and Higgins, that at least gives the Bengals a shot on any given Sunday.

Flacco's overall play has diminished compared to his peak as a younger QB, but he's not afraid to try to fit a ball into a tight window. While that can lead to turnovers, it still occasionally will result in some of his old magic pic.twitter.com/B9zg9kckKX

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) October 15, 2025

And lest you forget, Chase and Higgins are capable of some special things on the football field when conditions are right. Together they account for 47.4% of the Bengals’ targets, though Chase (57 targets, 42 receptions, 468 yards, and 4 TDs) has found better results this year than Higgins (35 targets, 18 receptions, 220 yards, 2 TDs).

For his part, Chase is one of the most explosive receivers in the game, whether it’s creating YAC, operating as a deep threat, or improvising in the scramble drill.

However, the support around them is wearing thin.

The Bengals are likely to be without tight ends Mike Gesicki (pectoral injury) and Tanner Hudson (concussion protocol), who both registered DNPs for Monday and Tuesday’s practices. That means the Steelers should see Noah Fant, an athletic former first-round pick (No. 20 overall in 2019), now with his third team and who has yet to produce a season worthy of his lofty draft pedigree.

Elsewhere, Andrei Iosivas has taken a step back this year as Cincinnati’s WR3, but remains third on the team in receiving yards, with 121. Running back Chase Brown is third on the team in targets (24) and has turned that into 102 yards for no scores and just three first downs.

But where Brown has really disappointed is in the rushing game. After seemingly breaking out in 2024 with seven scores and 990 rushing yards on 4.3 YPC, he’s looked indecisive and struggled behind an offensive line that is failing to create any push. Through six games, Brown is averaging just 2.7 YPC for 202 yards and one score. It’s not entirely his fault, as Bengals running backs are averaging just 0.36 yards before contact, which is second-to-last in the league and only besting the Browns.

It's been rough sledding for Chase Brown and the Bengals OL pic.twitter.com/vNSAh76Kp2

— Ryan Parish (@RyanParishmedia) October 15, 2025

With the injuries to the tight end room and the subpar offensive line talent, there’s little the Bengals can do to help beef up their running game. Even without Burrow, this is a team that lives in 11 personnel (1 running back, 1 tight end, 3 wide receivers). According to Sumer Sports, the Bengals are using 11 personnel 74.2% of the time, versus 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE) 24.0% of the time, and all other groupings at a rate of less than 1%.

That means the Steelers can counter with nickel and dime packages to negate the passing attack most of the day, as long as they can continue to stop the run. The fact that the Steelers are running Cover-3 – a coverage that protects against deep passes while allowing eight defenders to be near the line of scrimmage – at roughly a 35% clip, indicates that this should be a favorable matchup for the Steelers, at least on paper.

They just need the offense to do its part and provide the defense with a lead.

With that in mind, how’s the Bengals’ defense looking, Ryland?

RB
: The Bengals’ defense has been a problem for a while, and that hasn’t changed in 2025. The Bengals are bottom five in almost every metric and are currently giving up over 30 points per game.

To say Cincinnati didn’t at least attempt to patch some holes over the offseason would be disingenuous. They spent three of their top four draft picks on defenders and jettisoned well-regarded coordinator Lou Anarumo, replacing him with Al Golden, who was Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator.

However, while Anarumo, now in Indianapolis, currently has the Colts as the fourth-best scoring defense in the league, the Bengals are once again struggling at the bottom of the pack. The moral of the story is that there’s a talent deficiency on the Cincinnati defense that has yet to be remedied by the team’s front office.

Under Golden, the Bengals haven’t been on the cutting edge of versatility, but they do throw in their fair share of simulated pressures. Golden is more than willing to drop his defensive ends – even a star like Trey Hendrickson – into coverage multiple times a game. He likes to line up five and rush four at the line of scrimmage.

As a result, the Bengals have ways they try to pressure quarterbacks despite having the second-lowest blitz rate in football (16%). However, they also have the third-lowest pressure rate in the league at 27.1%.

On the back end, the Bengals once again can throw in the odd wrinkle, but like the Steelers, they are a Cover-1 and Cover-3 heavy team.

Teams that have seen passing success against the Bengals – that’s pretty much all of them – have heavily used the quick game. That’s also helped minimize Hendrickson, who, despite being a longtime member of the oft-struggling Cincinnati defense, remains one of the league’s top sack-getters (17.5 each in 2023 and ’24; four so far this year).

Per NFL Pro, teams have the fifth-fastest time to throw against the Bengals, and it’s been a successful strategy. Cincinnati is by far the worst defense in the league when it comes to allowing yards after catch. They’ve given up a whopping 999 yards in that department through six weeks this season – 147 more than the second-worst Seattle Seahawks.

The Cincinnati secondary isn’t horrible on paper, with D.J. Turner II, Cam Taylor-Britt, and Dax Hill handling cornerback duties and the less-intimidating duo of Jordan Battle and Geno Stone at safety. Turner, to his credit, turned in an excellent game on Sunday against Green Bay with an incredible five passes defensed. He’s a name to watch.

DJ Turner's tape has been ridiculously impressive for the Bengals so far this season. He looks like an All-Pro with how he pedals, his elite recovery speed, top notch pass breakup skills, and natural instincts. pic.twitter.com/CH0JB2ZMHF

— Ethan Young (@EthanYoungFB) October 13, 2025

I’d place the weight of the short-game woes on the Bengals’ inside linebacker group that has struggled this season. They’ve given up a lot of open space in the middle of the field, but also struggled to make tackles after the catch.

— Bengals & Brews (@BengalsBrews) October 13, 2025

The Bengals made a change at the position last week against the Packers, starting rookie Barrett Carter over veteran Logan Wilson. Demetrius Knight Jr., the team’s second-round pick this year, has also been starting, meaning the Bengals now have two rookies on the interior.

The duo had some nice moments against the run last week, but Cincinnati still gave up 153 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the loss. Their starting defensive line of Joseph Ossai (who had a solid game Sunday), B.J. Hill, T.J. Slaton Jr., and Hendrickson (who hasn’t practiced this week due to injury and could miss Thursday) just isn’t the most imposing unit against the ground game.

The Bengals have struggled against jumbo packages this year – both in the run game and off of play-action fakes.

If you haven’t picked up on the theme by now, this could be a big game for the Steelers’ tight end room.

Over his last two games against the Bengals, Pat Freiermuth has a combined 14 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Jonnu Smith’s athleticism and quick-game specialty match up perfectly against the Bengals’ coverage issues. And Darnell Washington should once again be a valuable bully in the run game, especially when Cincinnati gets cute and brings down a middle linebacker to line up on the edge.

In short, what the Steelers already do on offense lines up pretty well with what they need to do to beat the Bengals’ defense. The short week of Thursday Night Football tends to work in the underdog’s (and home team’s) favor, but the Steelers should be able to score enough points to win if they play to their identity and avoid back-breaking mistakes.

Bengals star pass rusher questionable to play against Steelers

The Cincinnati Bengals have struggled mightily on defense and now find their all-world DE Trey Henderickson questionable for Thursday night’s game against the Steelers.

— Paul Dehner Jr. (@pauldehnerjr) October 15, 2025

Hendrickson left the Bengals week 7 contest against the Packers with an apparent back injury – but this week he’s appeared on Cincy’s injury report with a banged-up hip.

Hendrickson led the NFL in sacks in 2024 and finished second in AP Defensive Player of the Year voting behind Broncos CB Patrick Surtain II.

The Bengals are currently ranked 31st in the league in total team defense, allowing 394.2 yards per game.

If Hendrickson can’t go, it could be another long night at Paycor Stadium.

Steelers defense plays ghost, dissappears vs. Bengals and Joe Flacco

gettyimages-2241511760.jpg

What do you get when you combine paying $162.8 million to a defense that allows Joe Flacco to look like Joe Montana with a floundering head coach who pantses Mike Tomlin on a national stage? You get a 4-2 Pittsburgh Steelers team that consistently teases its fanbase year after year with hot starts before failing to avoid the most obvious of trap games.

It isn’t Halloween yet, but the Steelers’ defense did its best impression of a ghost, allowing 470 total yards to the Cincinnati Bengals in a 33-31 Thursday night loss.

The Bengals had a clear, yet simple, plan in mind: to spam Ja’Marr Chase. And while that seems like an obvious strategy, no one seemed to tell Mike Tomlin that, because it worked to the tune of 16 catches for 161 yards. Chase and Tee Higgins combined for 22 catches, 257 yards, and two touchdowns. The Steelers built their defense specifically for matchups like this, and yet, they were still given a wedgie for 60 minutes. On top of that, it happened against the Bengals’ second-best Joe at quarterback – who knows what would have happened if Joe Burrow was on the field?

Unfortunately for the Steelers’ offense and their fans, you could put the 1985 Chicago Bears on the field, but that won’t change the fact that the unit is poorly coached. Mike Tomlin and Teryl Austin allowing the worst run offense in the NFL that averaged less than 60 yards per game entering the game rack up 142 yards on the ground? That’s coaching. Sitting in the same spot-drop defense that Joe Flacco has carved up all game, and knows the Steelers will play after playing them for 20 years? That’s coaching. Leaving Ja’Marr Chase in his own county on the Bengals’ final drive when they need a field goal to win the game? Well, you know the rest.

The Bengals were able to hit the easy button with quick hitters to Chase and Tee Higgins all game like they were an 11-year-old playing Madden, and the Steelers just couldn’t figure out a way to stop it. When you’re a defensive-minded head coach and you can’t figure out the most obvious problems, it’s over. The Bengals ended the game with 470 yards of offense, which is the most yards the Steelers have given up since October 9, 2022 against the Buffalo Bills (522).

looks like Joe Flacco was 47-of-47 on slants tonight and the Steelers couldn't figure it out that he might throw another slant pic.twitter.com/DHTzKC6c70

— Warren Sharp (@SharpFootball) October 17, 2025

The offense had a tremendous performance that went to waste. Sure, there were a pair of turnovers, but anytime the Steelers’ offense scores 31 points, there shouldn’t be any questions on who wins. Aaron Rodgers had his second four-touchdown performance of the season to take his season total up to 14. His fourth touchdown was a 68-yarder to Pat Freiermuth, who had by far his best day of the year, catching two of Rodgers’ four scores. Jaylen Warren had a tremendous game, as well, rushing for 127 yards on 7.9 yards per carry. The jumbo package is incredible, and if there is one bright spot to take away from this game, it’s that the offense had perhaps its best showing of the season. Rodgers looked great, he wasn’t sacked for the second straight game, and Pittsburgh is a legitimately good offense.

The other side of the coin, though, is that while the Steelers’ offense has become their strength, the defense has become a legitimate weakness. Arthur Smith has been the best coach on the Steelers’ staff by a wide margin, and he may be coaching his way into another head job. The offense is great, but if this is the defense that will take the field every week, it won’t matter. Now instead of being 5-1 after beating a Bengals team without Trey Hendrickson and Joe Burrow, the Steelers are 4-2 with the Green Bay Packers next on the docket, and they could see themselves go from 4-1 to 4-3 just like that – because it really wouldn’t be a Steelers’ season without a massive opportunity they fail to capitalize on.
