Pacers' Rick Carlisle reveals 'projected' starting SG with Tyrese Haliburton out

The Indiana Pacers have a highly intriguing 2025-26 season ahead of them. The former Iowa State Cyclones star suffered a torn Achilles injury in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Given the nature of his injury and the time it takes to recover from it, the Pacers confirmed in July that Haliburton will not see action for the entire 2025-26 season.

Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton ruptured his Achilles in Game 7 of the NBA Finals in the 2024-25 season, and his missing time has clearly taken its toll on him. NBA Mock Trade: Nets Send Center to Reigning Eastern Conference Champion

For the last year or so, the Brooklyn Nets have been involved in subtle trade rumors regarding their center, Nic Claxton. While his team continues to navigate the early stages of a rebuild, Claxton has a weird fit given his timeline. Brooklyn signed Claxton to a four-year, $97 million contract last summer, and for good reason. There are plenty of suitors for the former Georgia Bulldog, but one that stands out is the reigning Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers.

Former Pacers Guard Takes Major Shot at 2025 Squad: 'One of the Worst Finals Teams in NBA History'

A former All-Star and Indiana Pacers point guard (though not an All-Star on the Pacers, it should be noted) has come out swinging against his old team. Since trading to acquire three-time All-Star power forward Pascal Siakam ahead of the 2023-24 season's trade deadline, Indiana has been one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference — at least, when the playoffs start. Indiana has posted a just-okay regular season record of 97-67 across the these past two runs, but has made the Eastern Conference Finals for two consecutive years, and advanced all the way to the NBA Finals this past summer.

Pacers Star Seeking Massive Raise in Contract Extension Talks: Report

An Indiana Pacers star wing is hoping for a huge payday on his next contract. With two-time All-NBA point guard Tyrese Haliburton on the shelf for all of 2025-26 this season with an Achilles tendon tear, this young standout will be even more important to the team's success, so it may behoove Indiana to keep him happy. Per Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, sixth man shooting guard Bennedict Mathurin — a player who head coach Rick Carlisle suggested will earning the starting nod in the wake of Haliburton's injury, with former starting two-guard shifting down a spot to the starting point guard role — is angling for a contract extension since becoming eligible at the start of free agency this summer.

NBA Mock Trade: Sacramento Kings Deal DeMar DeRozan to Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers finished one win shy of their first NBA title. Before the postseason run to the NBA Finals, multiple Bleacher Report analysts proposed the Pacers as a trade landing spot for six-time All-Star small forward DeMar DeRozan. In 2024-25 with the Sacramento Kings, DeRozan posted 22.2 points, 4.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game in 77 contests.

Pacers' Rick Carlisle Named Best Coach in NBA By Insider

The Indiana Pacers made a massive mistake hiring Nate Bjorkgren as their head coach during the 2020-21 season. Kevin Pritchard fixed his mistake by bringing Rick Carlisle back to Indiana. Carlisle has been nothing short of spectacular and was the oldest coach to coach in the NBA Finals this past season. Carlisle is one of the most respected coaches in the NBA and has been for years.

Pacers Notes: 2 Pacers Named Trade Candidates, Tyrese Haliburton Reveals Injury Update, More

The Indiana Pacers are entering a "gap year," according to most of the NBA, and it could lead to a change in the roster. Superstar Tyrese Haliburton is missing the entire 2025-2026 season with an Achilles injury, leaving the team with essentially no hope at an NBA title run. The Pacers could end up trading established players for other assets that can be parlayed into a complete roster refresh since the upcoming season does not hold much ramifications for the future. Specifically, two Pacer players could end up getting traded for better-fitting pieces that complement Haliburton.
