Los Angeles Chargers All Quarter Century Team: Linebacker No. 2

NFL: Tennessee Titans at Los Angeles Chargers

Denzel Perryman and Stephen Cooper are your finalists for the LB2 spot on the Chargers Quarter Century Team.

Donnie Edwards was the runaway winner to be the LB1 on the Chargers Quarter Century Team. With him out of the running, the remaining two linebackers vying for a spot next to him are Denzel Perryman and Stephen Cooper.

Both Perryman and Cooper have been steady contributors for the Chargers during their respective careers, but neither ever found their way to much success in the way of postseason accolades. Still, they’ve been some of the longest-tenured players at the position this century for the Bolts.

Who will end up making the team in the end? Let’s go ahead and find out!

Denzel Perryman (2015-2020, 2024-present)

Perryman was drafted by the Chargers in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. In seven years across two different stints with the Bolts, Perryman has amassed 404 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, six sacks, three interceptions, six pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. He has started 62 games for the Chargers while playing in 80 total.

Stephen Cooper (2003-2011)

Cooper went from undrafted free agent to one of the most productive inside linebackers the Chargers have ever had. Despite not earning a starting job through his first four professional seasons, Cooper was a steady backup who still notched eight starts while playing in every game over that span. In 2007, Cooper earned his first full-time gig, starting all 16 games and recording a career-high 107 tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, six pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

During his nine years with the Chargers, Cooper accumulated 503 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, eight interceptions, 31 pass breakups, eight forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries.

Chargers should explore Keenan Allen reunion after Mike Williams retirement

The Los Angeles Chargers need a wide receiver after seeing one of their veterans retire.

The Los Angeles Chargers are starting training camp off on the wrong foot, especially at the wide receiver position.

Mike Williams, a former top-10 pick by the team, surprisingly announced his retirement just days after being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List.

With Williams gone and second-round selection Tre Harris still unsigned, the Chargers should target a wide receiver in free agency. One solution is another familiar face in veteran Keenan Allen.

Allen, 33, remains a free agent after failing to sign an agreement following his year with the Chicago Bears.

The Chargers traded Allen to the Bears last offseason, but the veteran struggled in his lone year in the Windy City. Allen caught 70 passes for 744 yards, his lowest yardage total since the 2015 NFL season.

Allen spent his first 11 years with the Chargers before the trade and was one of the last people who played in San Diego before the team moved to Los Angeles in 2017.

Allen made six Pro Bowls in his first seven years in the City of Angels, including his best statistical year in 2023 with 108 catches for 1,243 yards.

Allen carried a $23.1 million cap hit in 2024, which is why the Chargers traded him. However, if he signed for a lower number, the Chargers may be interested again.

Allen may feel some type of way re-joining the team that traded him last year, but the Chargers offer not just an opportunity to play, but to start in a place that’s familiar with him and a quarterback he already has chemistry with.

Signing with the Chargers would be Allen’s best career move and might be Los Angeles’ best path forward as well.

Chargers sign rookie WR Tre’ Harris after Mike Williams retires

Tre’ Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver room is in complete disarray going into training camp.

Veteran Mike Williams was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List, but shockingly retired instead. Luckily for the Chargers, they were able to come to terms with second-round rookie Tre’ Harris, who remained unsigned as part of the debacle with guaranteed draft picks.

ESPN’s Kris Rhim broke the news on social media.

Can confirm that second round rookie WR Tre’ Harris sighed his rookie contract. Holdout over.

— Kris Rhim (@krisrhim1) July 17, 2025

Fully-guaranteed contracts have never been handed out to second-round picks until this year when the Houston Texans signed wide receiver Jayden Higgins (the No. 34 overall pick) to such a deal. That prompted the Cleveland Browns, who took linebacker Carson Schwesinger one pick earlier to give him the same guarantee.

This has other second-round picks looking for full guarantees, which is why Harris remains unsigned. However, with Williams’ retirement, the Chargers have to get on the ball with Harris.

As of Thursday, only two second-round picks from the 2025 NFL Draft had signed their contracts.

Here’s what Chargers.com editorial director Eric Smith had to say regarding Harris’ contract:

That means Chargers wide receiver Tre’ Harris remains unsigned, a topic Hortiz addressed Wednesday.

“You guys know it, there’s 30 players that are sitting out and it is what it is,” Hortiz said.

He later added: “I wish I could put a crystal ball in it, I hope it’s done soon, I hope he gets out here and practices. Practice is vital for everybody, not just him, everybody. There’s a reason we come to camp, you want to hit the ground running Week 1. Every day missed affects everyone differently, but certainly you want guys out here practicing so hopefully we have him out here soon.”

Hortiz said Harris did not report to camp Saturday with the rest of the rookies but added there’s no animosity between anyone.

“I think it’s just somebody’s got to sign and all of a sudden you have the layers,” Hortiz said. “I get it on both sides, I’m not mad, that’s the business side of it.”

Now that Harris is on board, the Chargers are in a slightly better place with their receivers, but the job is far from over.

The Chargers play their first preseason game on Thursday, July 31 at 5 p.m. PT in Canton, Oh.
