Andy Reid details what he’s seeking in vacant left tackle position

Minnesota v Ohio State

The candidates for the position are veteran Jaylon Moore and rookie Josh Simmons.

On Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid opened 2025’s training camp with a press conference in front of the team dorm at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

The club will hold athletic testing and its opening team meeting on Monday, followed by the first workout on Tuesday. That is when the coaching staff can begin evaluating the battle at left tackle, the marquee matchup of this season’s camp.

Kansas City signed former San Francisco 49ers backup Jaylon Moore in free agency, then selected Ohio State rookie Josh Simmons with the No. 32 overall pick in the first round.

It seemed the initial plan was to rotate Moore and Simmons at left tackle, but on Sunday, Reid revealed a wrinkle. Starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor is one of three Chiefs who will open camp on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.

“Jawaan is out for the beginning of it, so we’ll just flip those two guys, and they’ll work in there,” said Reid. “We’ll go from there. So yeah, but Andy [Heck] rotates all those guys anyway.”

Later in the presser, Reid hinted Taylor’s stay on the PUP list would be brief, after which there would be a more traditional rotation at left tackle between Moore and Simmons as Taylor takes back his place as the starting right tackle.

Reid outlined the critical separators in determining who will eventually win the starting left tackle position.

“You’re going to look for the best guy, to start with, that can fill in that spot and that we can have a little consistency there,” he said. “We didn’t have that last year, and so let’s work at it and see what we come up with. We’ve got some good candidates for it, and we’ll just see where it goes.”

Coming off a torn patellar tendon that he suffered while playing for Ohio State in mid-October, Simmons surprised Chiefs coaches by being able to do all that was asked of him by the end of organized team activities (OTAs). After minicamp, Reid confirmed Simmons would be a full go for training camp, but his work did not end there.

“He stayed up here this whole break,” said Reid of Simmons. “He’s been here, working his tail off... in the way he finished Phase 3. But it looks like he’s ready to go, and we’ll keep an eye on him and see where he’s at. But his condition — he was good when he was out there — and he seems to be a worker, so we’ll just have to see. He’s never been through one of these, so we gotta see how it goes.”

Pressed for a timeline, Reid suggested that he hoped to name a starter by the end of the team’s time in St. Joseph in mid-August.

“I think by the time you get out of this thing, you’d like to have an idea who that is, right? You want to have a feel on it. So we evaluate these guys — every player — for whether it’s a light practice or a hard practice, they’re evaluated and graded and so on. So, we’ll see how it all sorts out.”

Monday Musings: Will the Chiefs get Trent McDuffie done this training camp?

Kansas City Chiefs OTAs

Let’s discuss the next contract up in the Chiefs’ long-term plans.

On Sunday afternoon, defensive end George Karlaftis agreed to terms on a long-term contract extension. This offseason, the Chiefs have been forthcoming about their order of plans:

  • Get a long-term deal done with right guard Trey Smith (check).
  • Sign Karlaftis to a long-term extension (check).
  • Sign cornerback Trent McDuffie to a long-term extension (TBD).

Around the time the Chiefs agreed to terms with Smith, the New York Jets made Sauce Gardner the league’s highest-paid cornerback ($120 million, including $60 million in guarantees). In March, Houston Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. signed a three-year, $90 million extension (including $89 million guaranteed). Theoretically, those contracts should provide the Chiefs and McDuffie’s team some parameters to use.

So... therein lies the question: will the Chiefs lock up McDuffie before the end of training camp? Let us know what you think in our comment section.

Chiefs sign Baylor wide receiver to take Justyn Ross’ spot

TCU v Baylor

In four years at Baylor, Presley logged more than 1,000 receiving yards.

The Kansas City Chiefs have added wide receiver Hal Presley to their 90-man roster, according to the NFL’s official transactions report.

Presley entered the league this past spring as an undrafted free agent from Baylor. The 6‑foot‑3, 197‑pound receiver first landed with the Buffalo Bills but was cut after their two‑day rookie minicamp.

Over a four-year college career in Waco, Presley logged 81 receptions, 1,048 yards and seven touchdowns. He earned an All‑Big 12 honorable mention in 2022 with 32 catches for 382 yards and four scores.

Kansas City’s wide receiver room is well established at the top, but roughly seven players are battling for the final one or two spots. Presley now joins that competition, though he’s realistically aiming for a position on the practice squad.

Presley effectively replaces the recently waived Justyn Ross in the final open spot on the 90-man roster.

Tuesday training camp notebook: All eyes on Josh Simmons’ first day

Kansas City Chiefs Mandatory Minicamp

After Kansas City’s first training camp practice, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes spoke about the rookie left tackle.

On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs took the field for their first practice of 2025 training camp. Of the 91 players in attendance, there is perhaps no player more deserving of attention than first-round rookie Josh Simmons.

After the Chiefs selected Simmons out of Ohio State with the No. 32 overall pick in this year’s draft, the almost immediate consensus was that Kansas City had pulled a grand heist on the rest of the NFL. Simmons was considered a likely top-10 pick had it not been for his college injury.

The choice is already paying dividends in St. Joseph, as Simmons was a full participant on Day 1.

“He did some good things,” said head coach Andy Reid. “He worked in there with the [first-team offensive line] and did a nice job, I thought. He’s got things he’s got to work on, but you keep doing that.”

Starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor underwent cleanup surgery on his knee after the 2024 season, limiting him for organized team activities (OTAs) and sending him to the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list to start the summer session.

Because of that, Simmons took every rep at left tackle while new veteran signee Jaylon  Moore manned the right tackle position. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes liked what he saw in Simmons’ first camp reps.

“I think he’s done a great job,” said Mahomes. “You see the talent, obviously. You see the physical ability. But I think more than that, the way he’s worked. I got to see him working through the rest of his rehab process and then working on the field. He’s done a great job with that, and then learning. He’s getting tested every single day with [defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] and being able to pick up blitzes and do all different types of stuff, as well as go get some great pass-rushers. I’m excited for the future that he has.”

In the months leading into camp, the prospect of Simmons earning the starting job as a rookie has shifted from what was once thought to be far-fetched into a genuine reality. Because of that, Mahomes has continued to stress communication with the 22-year-old — both on and off the field.

“That’s why we sit in the film room and we talk through these things,” said the quarterback. “I’m talking to the whole O-line, and we have to all be on the same page. And I think it’s going to help him a lot that Creed [Humphrey’s] there and Trey [Smith] and some of these veteran guys that know kind of how I talk and what I mean when I say stuff, as well as just us meeting together and having that communication. Like I say every training camp, the best test you’re going to get is against Spags. So going up against him, seeing those blitzes, communicating, that’s going to help us a lot as we get to the season.”

During his turn at the podium, Smith shared some of the advice he is providing Simmons.

“Just go to work,” said Smith. “Just apply everything you can to your game. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Everything’s not going to come at once. It’s going to take time to develop those habits. St. Joe’s one of the hardest training camps in the NFL. It’s going to be miserable every single day. Just get used to it, man.

“At the end of the day, you’ve just got to keep fighting. You’ve got to keep punching. You’ve got to keep swinging day after day after day, just stacking and building. When the season comes around, you’re ready.”

After turning his sixth‑round beginnings into the richest guard deal ever, Smith would know.

And you could bet Simmons is listening.

Who needs media with little fans asking the most important questions?

Quote of the day

Defensive end George Karlaftis on his mentorship of rookie defensive end Ashton Gillotte: “I was extremely fortunate... three years ago, probably around today, I had guy called Frank Clark, and he was out here every single day after practice — and I’ve been fortunate enough to know Ashton for a couple years now, and working with him and trying to pass down the torch, kind of like Frank did me. Carlos [Dunlap], Chris [Jones], all those guys that I had my rookie year. And that’s really what it’s about: figuring it out as you go, it makes it a lot easier when you got a guy that wants the best for you and is genuine about your success and all that stuff.”

What’s next?

Tuesday’s initial practice leads into another workout on Wednesday as part of the ramp-up period. That workout begins at 9:15 a.m. Arrowhead Time. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will address the media following the practice as linebackers sign autographs.
